nowfind.biz is driving me crazy!

I am new here but you all seem like you must be sent from the gods. . I have been trying to get rid of "nowfind.biz" all day. it has hi-jacked by browser and changed my home page and search functions. It has also added four porn sights to my favorites in internet explorer. I have run web sweeper and a few other spy ware programs, and they have identified it, and said they have removed it, but several seconds later, all the hijacking has resumed. It also seems to disable spysweeper and makes it crash. Additionally, I have read many of the previous hijack this posts and tried to follow you directions to get rid of it, but to no avail, I have been unable to get rid of it. I am running windows XP and I must say, when I tried to go into safe mode and run hi jack this, when ever I tried to type on my keyboard, my computer froze up (maybe this always happens in safe mode I do not know.) BUt I am posting my Hijack this log and perhaps one of you kind souls can help me. .thanks in advance

steve

and here is my hi jack this log!

Hi and Welcome to TSF

**Note** Try doing the fix in safe mode. If it fails...try normal mode.

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log…..

Download Hoster http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Open add/remove programs and remove iGiveShoppingWindow if listed. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be but make sure)

C:\WINDOWS\System32\103a.exe

Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure you do not miss an entry)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://103.nowfind.biz/pps.php

C:\WINDOWS\System32\103a.exe <--delete that file
C:\Program Files\iGiveShoppingWindow <--delete that folder

Now open the hoster file and run the program to restore your hosts file.

Once done reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log file to confirm what was removed and if it's clean or not.

thank you for the help so far, but unfortunately it did not work. i have posted the new hijackthis log file below. my only comments that I think are of note is as follows: i downloaded hoster.zip, but when i tried to run it at the end of the cleaning process, there was nothing in the hoster program to restore. 2) when i went to add remove programs, igiveshoppingwindow was listed, when I tried to remove I got the message "could not find the main class. program will exit" but I did find the folder and delete however. other than that, I followed your directions to a tee, but I am afraid it did not work :( below is my new log file, thank you so much for your help

I know. First fix was to remove some bad guys. We will address the others now...

Download Silent runners.Vbs http://www.silentrunners.org/
1. Make sure you have any script blocking software disabled
2. Run the program. It will take a few minutes to complete.
3. Once complete it will produce a log named “StartupPrograms” with Your user and date in the filename. Open that txt file and posts it contents in your next post.

Download and unzip
http://castlecops.com/zx/Zupe/Find%20It%20NT-2K-XP.zip
Double-click on find.bat inside the folder to run it. It should run for a while, then open a text document. Please copy and paste the contents of that document here.

I need you to locate the following files and let me know which ones you have and the directory it's in..

Mtwirl32.dll
xofAo.dll
Mtwcnl32.dll

Well that bites. Seams this is another version as the entrys it's supposed to display...did not. Lets try again....

Download KillBox http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe

Download HSFix from here.. http://www.atribune.org/downloads/HSFix.zip

After it is downloaded, create a new folder on your desktop called "HSFix" and extract all the files into the newly created folder.

Click start..run...type in regedit. Now navigate to the following keys and delete the entry in RED...

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
"syscls" = "C:\WINDOWS\System32\103a.exe" [file not found]
<-- delete that entry

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\
{987D0E71-6CAD-11D5-AA37-0001028DF1BC}
<--delete that folder

Close regedit.

Reboot into safe mode.

Locate the HSFix folder on your desktop, open it, and double-click "hsfix.bat" Let it run and when finished a log will be produced and opened. Save that log.

Now open hijackthis and fix the following....

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://103.nowfind.biz/pps.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://103.nowfind.biz/pps.php
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://103.nowfind.biz/pps.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://103.nowfind.biz/pps.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://103.nowfind.biz/pps.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://103.nowfind.biz/pps.php

Navigate to C:\Windows\Prefetch and delete ALL files in that folder.

Run the hoster program to restore your hosts file.

Run the Cleanup utility again but select NO when it asks you to logoff/reboot.

Run KILL box. Paste the following locations into KILL BOX one at a time. Checkmark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot

C:\WINDOWS\System32\103a.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtwcnl32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtwirl32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xofao.dll

Once back to normal mode post another hijackthis log and that HSfix log. Since your void of the files/entrys that are supposed to be there....this looks like a new version of this hijacker. It also looks like this entry..C:\WINDOWS\System32\103a.exe is the one protecting those R1/013 entrys....so we need to axe that file!

Also see if any other files were created around the same date/timeas that
103a.exe file. Check both System32 folder and the Windows folder. Post any that you find.

first of all, I must always start out with thank you so much!!!! per your previous instructions, i followed the above regimen. i was able to find the HKCU keys and I deleted them. as instructed i ran HSfix and, ran hijackthis and fixed the appropriate files. I deleted all the files in Prefetch and ran hoster. I wasn't sue what cleaner utility you were refering to in your instructions that I was supposed to run, so I ran both Ad-aware and spy search and destroy.. When attempting to run killbox, none of the listed files (103a.exe,mtwcnl32.dll,mtwirl32.dll,xofao.dll) existed so I was unable to "kill" them.

Lastly, and certainly most importanly you told me to find files that were created around the time of 103a.exe. Since that file had previously been deleted, I was unable to do a search around that time, however, I do know when the hijacker first appeared and I searched for suspicious DLL files and EXE files that were created around this time. and I found several that were created at the same time and had names that were similar to the names you asked me to search for, I have listed the names below, and here we go. . .

all of these files were located in
c:\windows\system32 and were created at the same time 8:31:11 am on 4/10, this is when the hijacker appeared

cidft.dll
cidpog.dll
gupd.dll
hst32.dll
icnfe.dll
icqrt.dll
icubr.dll
sdfup.dll
wcni32.dll
wecxg32.dll
wirl.dll <---> 14 kb compared to 1 kb for all others, also, similar name to file I was to search for
xcwer32.dll
zxmsn.dll

this one created at 9:29 same day
thun.dll
created at 9:30
rch32.dll

The following .exe files were around the same time and were both located in c:\documents and settings\steve\local settings\temp

1.exe at 9:28 the same day
pps.exe at 9:30

These were the files that seemed most likely to me becuase of time and the similarity of the names of many of the dll's and the ones you had me search for. . .

below are the hijack this log and the HSfiX log that you wanted. . .

Thanks for posting those files Lem. Might help the next poor soul that gets this hijacker.

Download and install CleanUp http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

Reboot into safe mode and delete all those files you found.....

wirl.dll
xcwer32.dll
zxmsn.dll

Then run hijackthis and fix the following...

Run the hoster program and restore your hosts file..

Now run the cleanup utility and reboot/logoff when prompted.

Once back to windows post another hijackthis log. Hopefully since 103a.exe is no longer running in the log..and those other files are gone..this hijackers protection is also gone and will allow us to fix it now.

well. . I think we are getting closer, but it is not there yet, the "favorites" that were being installed are no longer being installed, but the hijack this still shows that it is in control of my URL and search bar. shall I run through everything again just to double check everything? run all the sweepers and shreders? what oh what should I do. . and as alsways. . thanks so much. .and here is the log
also, I did not have any of the three files you inquired about
mtwirl.dll

YES YES YES YES YES. . I think it is finally gone!!!! to my eyes I do not see any remnants of it. . either while I surf the web or in the hijackthis log. . I have posted it one last time to let you look it over to make sure that it is truly gone. BUt I can not thank you enough. .I want to contribute, can I give directly to you? or should I just give to the general site! it is not an either or, I will do both if you receive gifts!! good to know there are still good people in the world! THANKS THANKS THANKS. . also, what would be a good software for me to get to prevent this from happening again in the future?

also, one last thing, the files that I removed, three are slightly different than what I posted above. the three corrected file names (all of which are slightly differnt than their names above are. . .

cidpog32.dll
icvbr.dll
wcnl32.dll

along with what was posted by me and than again by you in the previous posts. BUt here is my hopefully last log. . . thanks again

Outstanding. That log is clean. If things are fine...disable system restore and then re-enable it and make a restore point. This will clear all the adware out of the restore folder. Please read through the spyware prevention section on how to protect yourself from spyware/adware Here and use the recommend programs and methods to protect yourself!

Contributing to the site would be helpful. I would like some info though as I'm crafting a fix for others to use. So...from my last post..once I had you remove those files reboot and fix the entrys...what did you do?. Since your next log...contained those same entrys..what did we miss? Did you delete more files (those 3 you listed)?

I need to know what you did/removed between the last 2 logs you posted please. I also need to confirm that the following files were all on your system..correct?....

cidft.dll
cidpog.dll
gupd.dll
hst32.dll
icnfe.dll
icqrt.dll
icubr.dll
sdfup.dll
wcni32.dll
wecxg32.dll
wirl.dll
xcwer32.dll
zxmsn.dll
thun.dll
rch32.dll
cidpog32.dll
icvbr.dll
wcnl32.dll
1.exe
pps.exe
103a.exe

all I did between the next to last post and the last post was run hijackthis onetime and "cleanup" one time. I did it it regular mode and not in safe mode. in hijackthis, i "checked" and "fixed" the 5 or so remaining "R1" nowfind.biz problems. When I rebooted after deleting the newly identified files (after following you last set of instructions), i noticed that much of my problem was gone, as only the R1's in the hijackthis scan were still there, all the other problems 01 and 013 were not there, so I thought that I was making progress. so I simply ran hijackthis to get rid of the R1's and ran "cleanup" to permenantly erase it. this seems to have worked. I am not sure why this needed to be done again but I could tell I was close prior to running it for the last time, so I tried again.

Below is the confirmation of the files that I had on my computer. I will list them below. When i first posted the files, I had some typos in the file names, the three files from the last post were just corrections of the typos. but so there is no confusion, here are the files that were on my computer:

cidft.dll
cidpog32.dll
gupd.dll
hst32.dll
icnfe.dll
icqrt.dll
icvbr.dll
sdfup.dll
wcnl32.dll
wecxg32.dll
wirl.dll
xcwer32.dll
zxmsn.dll
thun.dll
rch32.dll
1.exe
pps.exe
103a.exe

the following three files were NOT, i repeat NOT on my computer, they were simply typos in the earlier posting:

cidpog.dll
icubr.dll
wcni32.dll

Please let me know if you need any other information, as I now wish to be a contributing member to this community!!! and again, thank you so much!!!
