Okay...my final system to cleanup here at home. It's a Dell desktop with Windows XP Home using three logon accounts (only one of which has administrator priveleges). Please keep in mind: though I've done a fair amount of system cleanup and lock-downs (under TSF tutoring) on my other three systems in the house, this is the first one that has multiple logon accounts. Please remember to advise me if I need to run/fix something under all three logons. Thanks!

It may help you if you print out or copy this page for easy reference.. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order its listed..These instructions only apply to HJT v1.99.1

Please Keep your browser and all open programs closed (except firewalls and antivirus) when you are carrying out the fixes.

Turn off System Restore instructions (WinXP)
Rightclick My Computer | Properties | System Restore | check “Turn off System Restore”, <Apply>, <OK>. Reboot. When we have confirmed that your log file is clean, you may renable System Restore and create a new restore point.

SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.
To show hidden files instructions (WinXP)
Doubleclick My Computer | Tools | Folder Options | View tab
Select Show Hidden Files and Folders
Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types
Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
Select Apply to All Folders | Yes | Apply | OK

Files highlighted in BLACK will need to be removed from your hard drive.

Please start by putting HJT in SAFE MODE. During reboot, tap the F8 key. Select Safe Mode and then run "Hijack This"

Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click End Process for each one if they are still listed.

I followed your steps to the "T" but, when the two files listed below

C:\WINDOWS\System32\e4vfah.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\lfr78.exe

were not found when I went to delete them manually using Windows Explorer (I had Show Hidden files turned on...and...I even SEARCHed for the files using the system search tool. Thinking they might be hiding some other way, I even used the browser in KILLBOX to try and fine them in the SYSTEM32 folder but, alas...they were not to be found). Is it correct to assume that HJT removed the files when it "fixed" the BHO and 04 entries?

Question: does HJT work off the whole system in general...even if I have 3 different accounts/logons to the computer? Anyways, here's my new log. Thanks again for the help!

The 02 files get deleted but not generaly exe files.HJT works on the whole system not personal accounts.

just run a check and delete those files (use the full path) using KillBox.

Okay...I wnet into KillBox (in NORMAL mode...not SAFE mode) and manually typed in each file name and then KILLed them. For each file the SUCCESS window/message came up. I then ran a new HJT log...it is posted below. I will keep the system up and running until you tell me otherwise. Thanks!

It's a Dell desktop with Windows XP Home using three logon accounts (only one of which has administrator priveleges). Please keep in mind: though I've done a fair amount of system cleanup and lock-downs (under TSF tutoring) on my other three systems in the house, this is the first one that has multiple logon accounts. I followed your steps to the "T" but, when the two files listed below C:\WINDOWS\System32\e4vfah.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\lfr78.exe were not found when I went to delete them manually using Windows Explorer (I had Show Hidden files turned on...and...I even SEARCHed for the files using the system search tool. Thinking they might be hiding some other way, I even used the browser in KILLBOX to try and fine them in the SYSTEM32 folder but, alas...they were not to be found). Is it correct to assume that HJT removed the files when it "fixed" the BHO and 04 entries? Question: does HJT work off the whole system in general...even if I have 3 different accounts/logons to the computer? Anyways, here's my new log. Thanks again for the help! ThePaw Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Posts: 49 OS: WinXP	Okay...I wnet into KillBox (in NORMAL mode...not SAFE mode) and manually typed in each file name and then KILLed them. For each file the SUCCESS window/message came up. I then ran a new HJT log...it is posted below. I will keep the system up and running until you tell me otherwise. Thanks!
