Can't quite get rid of it all...

Hello all,

I can't quite seem to get this one totally clean. I have done all the pre-posting stuff (AdAware, SpyBot, CleanUp, turned off system restore, etc.) but am still having a few probs here and there. That being said, here are the contents of my current result.txt file:

New log

HJT doesn't seem to fix those entires, I have tried it before. It will get rid of the "020" entry, but another mystery dll pops up in it's place, and it doesn't touch the "023" entry.

Give us this log also. It should help us find out what file is causing this problem:

Right click on http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Silent%20Runners.vbs and choose Save As...Save it to your Desktop. Make sure you have disabled any programs that may block/disable scripts (ex: Ad-Watch, TeaTimer, Norton, etc.). Double click on 'Silent Runners' to run it. This will take a few minutes. It will create a file called 'Startup Programs' followed by your computer name and current date. Open up that file and post all the contents here in your next post.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe. Don't run it yet.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. While in the Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\She ll Extensions\Approved\ and delete these:

{E986AB39-E3DF-4917-ADA2-F4B4A8DF985D}
{40FA7BB8-0B9F-4E10-BAA7-90DBEAEE839C}
{C5AC7E22-1CC1-40DD-991E-CFA023C13469}
{FC9D072D-35C4-4846-A477-4235029AE1C1}
{0773D760-3F5D-48BC-A24B-8211622103BD}
{45D2EA00-0602-4BD3-B37E-A8498151A281}
{9159303F-1C97-4611-9982-517E0FA008AB}
{C6D31806-213E-49A7-8B9F-4B7244B89AD4}

Next go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\ and delete Control Panel

If any of the above registry keys are giving you problems deleting, right click on them and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor.

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for Network Client (nwclntf) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O20 - Winlogon Notify: SharedDLLs - C:\WINDOWS\system32\g640lghm164a.dll
O23 - Service: Network Client (nwclntf) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\winlogon.exe (file missing)

Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\g640lghm164a.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\guard.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mrang.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dn2401fqe.dll

Do a search for winlogon.exe and right click on any of the files found. Go to Properties->Version tab and see if it's from Microsoft. Do this for each file found. If it's not from Microsoft (or doesn't even have a version tab) and it was created recently, then delete it.

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

Also post a new Silent Runners log.

New logs

I have followed the last instructions and here are the results:

There was no Control Panel entry showing here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\ and delete Control Panel

HJT does not appear to fix this in neither Safe or Normal Mode:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: SharedDLLs - C:\WINDOWS\system32\g640lghm164a.dll

guard.tmp is still in the sys32 directory

Download KillBox (v2.0.0.76) . Paste the full file path in the box and click on "Delete on Reboot". Next click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" Click "No" When all files have been entered (one by one) then click "Yes"and post a new log when you have rebooted.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\g640lghm164a.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ukrfaxa.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\guard.tmp

New logs

I have done as instructed. I noticed everytime I have deleted guard.tmp, it just comes right back, even if I put a dummy file in it's place. I have also since your last post done a virus scan with McAfee, just for fun.

Here are the new logs:
