My System

OK, try this. Double click on that HOSTS file. It should ask you how you want to open it right? Don't open it yet. Instead hit ctrl+alt+del and kill the explorer.exe process. Your desktop will be blank now with no start menu. Don't worry about it. Now go back to that Open With window and open it in Notepad. Edit those lines out that MicroBell mentioned earlier. Save the file and close it. Hopefully that will allow you to do it. If not, post back.

After that's done, do a ctrl+alt+del again if the window is not up already. Then go to File->New Task and type in explorer and hit OK. That should bring you back.

From what I read, that error by Spybot (common hijacker) is an error. So ignore it. Just do the updates weekly and run the scans.

Your log is clean. If you disabled System Restore, make sure to enable it now.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

If greyknight17's suggestion fails (Likely it will) try this. Understand that Stopzilla is the program that's blocking access to the hosts file. So...reboot into safe mode. Open task manager and KILL either of these if running...

C:\Program Files\Common Files\STOPzilla!\SZServer.exe
C:\Program Files\STOPzilla!\Stopzilla.exe

Once Stopzilla is disabled..you should now have access to the hosts file. Then..remove those entrys (Or run hoster program to restore)...run spybot...add it's hosts file entrys. Once thats done open the hosts file and confirm the entrys were added in the hosts file before you leave safe mode.

If they are....reboot..and check the file again in normal mode. If they are gone (Spybots entrys)...look through the Stopzilla options and see if there is an option for turning off hosts file protection. If so...turn it off. Repeat the above procedure...but this time use spybots setting...to lock the hosts file.

Again...Stopzilla is locking the hosts file so thats why Spybot and hoster return the error as they are being denied access. I have confirmed this with another user who had the same issue with Stopzilla and the hosts file producing the same errors your reporting trying to access it.

Ok, I did what MicroBell said and killed the SZServer.exe in my task manager then I was able to get to my HOSTS file and clear it. Then I opened up SpyBot and put in the hosts file. I then checked to make sure it was there in my HOSTS file and it's all there..looks just like the list that was posted!

Should I post a HJT log or am I okay now??

Oh and now that I've disabled Stopzilla my SpyBot hasn't given me the error anymore!

Thank you ALL for helping me!

You can post it if you like....but You were clean..and we were just dealing with the hosts file. As long as those spybots entrys are in there...you should be set. Don't forget to turn system restore back on. Please read through the spyware prevention section on how to protect yourself from spyware/adware Here and use the recommend programs and methods to protect yourself!
