I'm in trouble! Please help with Cannot find server or DNS Error
I'm running Win98 SE. It's been a wonderful operating system, until about a month ago. On web sites I'm trying to access, I can't get to any pages that require me to enter passwords or ID's. For example: Ebay,...I can access the front page, the items up for bid, the chat rooms etc, but when I try to bid, sign in, sell, etc...I get a page that says "The page cannot be displayed," and at the bottom of the page, it says "Cannot find server or DNS Error." I get the same result when trying to access my spam filter, my hotmail account etc,...all requiring a user ID and password. I can access other sites requiring similar information, but ebay, corecom, hotmail, and I'm not sure what other sites because I'm spending all of my timetrying to fix this, are inaccessable. Some work I'm doing for a non profit museum depends on my ability to access two of these sites and I need to fix this. Can anyone help me? My knowledge on computers is limited, but I can follow instructions. Recently, (about a year ago) my computer was hijacked, and after seeking help on line, I was able to clear that up by following instructions emailed to me from a tech web site like this one, so I'm hoping you might be able to help. I was instructed to post my HijackThis log here, Please see below:

I see that Internet Explorer was open when you ran this scan. It is critical that all browsers and windows are closed when using HJT.
Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Go to My Computer->View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show all files' is checked under the 'Hidden Files' section. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside 'Hide file extensions for known file types'. For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Please disable the script blocking feature of Norton. You can re-enable this after the fix. Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds. I see you have Spybot S&D on your system. Please be sure to update it, and run a fresh scan. Have it fix any problems it may find. Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,SearchURL = http://find4u.net/sp.htm O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum. |

Hi tram3 -
For some reason, your new scan is with an outdated version. Do you have more than one version installed? Can you please provide us with a new scan with version 1.99.1, as your original log was? Thanks, Bob |

You should delete that old version from your system, and always obtain the latest version, downloaded to and run from your system.
Your log is clean. To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial (http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent) and use the tools provided. Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go. Please respond once more in this thread. |

The problem still exists
Hello Teton Bob, Thank you for looking at my logs and scans. The problem of advancing to the next page on certain websites still exists. The page comes up with "Cannot view page" then there's a list of things to do to solve the problem, but none work for me. And at the bottom, it still says "Cannot find server of DNS error." If the problem didn't come from spyware or a highjack, then maybe my browser is "broken." I'll check into installing new software. I have access to Windows 2000. Maybe I'll un-install Windows 98 SE and install Windows 2000. Do you think that would "fix" the browser should that be the problem? Please respond if you can. I consider this to be my last entry for this problem. You've done a wonderful job and trying to track this problem down. Upon your advice about the software change, I'll close this tag. Thanks again.

You don't have a firewall that might be blocking the sites by any chance do you?
Try this: Download WinsockFix (http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/WinsockFix.zip) and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it. Restart and see if the webpages are ok now.

Winsock fix didn't work...but thanks
Hello Greynight17,
Thanks for the Winsock fix, but it didn't seem to work either. I never installed a firewall, I'm assuming that my norton anti virus software has that feature, but I have to profess my ignorance, I don't know much about it. Could this problem be caused by the Norton software? I'm out of options. Let me know what you think. Thanks again for your help. Don |

Hi Don-
You'll need your Windows 98 CD for this: Go to Start>run and type in SFC then hit Enter. You want to scan for altered files. The System File checker will prompt you for the CD if it is needed. Please, can you be more precise in the details of the websites you are having problems with? Which sites....what error message.....everytime or sporadic? Post the results of your SFC scan along with the specific details on the website issues. |

Ran the SFC
Hello Teton Bob,
I ran the SFC, (what a cool feature, I didn't know I had this!) There was a file that may have been corrupt, I didn't write it down because I thought there'd be a report or log at the ned the scan and I could cut-and-paste it into this reply. But there wasn't a report, so I'm giving you this info from memory. I believe it was setupx.dll. I know it was a .dll file, I'm sure it was a set up file too. I hope this helps. Thanks for your work on this. Don |

Let's try registering Internet Explorer's DLL files. Go to Start->Run and type in command and click OK. Then type in each of the following, hitting the Enter key after each line:
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll regsvr32 Shell32.dll regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll regsvr32 Mshtml.dll regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
