Download Hoster (http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Hoster.exe) and run it. Choose the 'Restore Original Hosts' button and press OK.
Download StartDreck http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/StartDreck.zip Unzip to its own folder and start the program: Press 'Config' Press 'mark all' Uncheck the following boxes only: System/Running Process -> List Modules System/Drivers -> NT Services System/Drivers -> NT Kernel- and FS-drivers Press 'OK' Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application) Post the log in this thread. Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3. Learn how to use it here. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates here. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to System Testing on the menu and choose Full System Scan. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies.

Here are the logs your requested. Unless TDS tries to change my host file, I'm pretty sure something is still active because the Microsoft Spyware Beta blocked something from changing the host file shortly after running hoster, and while TDS-3 was installing. And it did find a couple things, so I'll just wait and see where things go from here. I hope you can help me get rid of this stuff.

This directory contains the legit hosts file for XP... C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
Delete those in that C:\Windows folder and any others that are found. c:\temporary\aun_0010.exe <--delete that file c:\windows\system32\akcore.dll <--delete that file According to your last log..your still infected with VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations: http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread. IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

All right, files deleted as instructed, and here's the L2MFIX log.
Thanks for the help. Looks like it is taking the whole team to get this taken care of. I wish I knew what this guy ran to get all this junk on the computer. Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2MFix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log. IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so! Also give us a new HijackThis log.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.
Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. While in the Registry Editor, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\ and delete MS-DOS Emulation If any of the above registry keys are giving you problems deleting, right click on them and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor. Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot): C:\WINDOWS\system32\m664lgjq16oe.dll Restart and give us a new HijackThis log. Go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and open up the hosts file (no extensions) up in Notepad. There should be a bunch of lines with a # in front of them followed by a single line like: 127.0.0.1 localhost If you have anything after that, please post them here.

I was able to delete the registry entry, but not the dll file, which doesn't appear to be there.
As of right now, I have not rebooted in case we want to do something else related to that file. Pre-reboot, the hosts file is also clean with only the 127.0.0.1 entry. Let me know if I should just reboot and send a new HJT file, and I will do so first thing in the morning when I get back here to work. Thanks, Paul |

Paul:
It's likely the filename has changed since running the LM2fix and Greyknights next fix so we will need another set of logs. Since the automatic fix failed...we need to address it manually... **Note** You may already have these programs...just run them when indicated. Process 1. Download Kill2Me from here and run ] http://computercops.biz/zx/Merijn/kill2me.zip 2. Download this version of pv and unzip it to your desktop. (**Note** It MUST be on the desktop!) It will create it's own folder. http://www.downloads.subratam.org/pv.zip Then proceed below.. 1. Double click the runme.bat file. 2. Select option 3 and hit enter. Save the log that was generated. 3. Then select option 5. Save the log that was generated. Copy and paste each of them into the next your next post. 3. Copy and paste the text below inside the quote box to notepad. Save it to your desktop as type "all files" and name it notify.bat. Quote:
4. Download the latest vx2 finder here http://downloads.subratam.org/VX2Finder(126).exe Click the "Find Vx2.Betterinternet" button. Click the Make Log button a post that log in your next reply. So I need ALL 4 of these logs from the infected PC. Please note that during this removal process this PC can NOT be turned off or REBOOTED. Doing so...makes all 4 logs useless as the rootkits DLL (the baddie) file name will change. So if you have to wait a day to proceed with the next step in the fix..just make sure the PC is not rebooted. If you must reboot the PC...then you need to start again at the process section. The detection and removal process must be done at the same time without the PC being rebooted

Good morning!
Thanks for all the help. This machine is really starting to look CLEAN to me, but of course, you are the experts, so here are some logs. Let me mention that both of the PV logs came back empty. I would select the option indicated, and after a few seconds an empty log.txt notepad file would show up. If I'm supposed to wait longer or something, let me know, I tried to give it an extra minute or two before moving on, and nothing ever appeared. Also, as for reasons I think we're finally close to being truly clean. I had noticed that this person's recycle bin was acting wonky, and it appears to be back to normal. And as I said a few posts ago, it is no longer trying to make the connections after every reboot. And since you told me not to reboot, I just want you to know, I did a reboot just before starting the steps in the most recent instructions. I messed up because I thought the thing was hibernating since it had been on all night, but apparently it had only powered off the monitor, because when I hit the power button to wake it up from hibernation, it started shutting down...doh! My bad. But this was before the beginning of your instructions, so I think the logs should be accurate. And you didn't ask for the HJT log, but because some of the other stuff looked clean, I figured I would run one, and finally no line 20 with some random DLL on a Winlogon Notify. Yay! Thanks for the help, and let me know what I should run from here to be sure this system is clean before I send it back to its owner. Thanks, Paul notify.bat results: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\crypt32chain] "Asynchronous"=dword:00000000 "Impersonate"=dword:00000000 "DllName"=hex(2):63,00,72,00,79,00,70,00,74,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,\ 6c,00,00,00 "Logoff"="ChainWlxLogoffEvent" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\cryptnet] "Asynchronous"=dword:00000000 "Impersonate"=dword:00000000 "DllName"=hex(2):63,00,72,00,79,00,70,00,74,00,6e,00,65,00,74,00,2e,00,64,00,\ 6c,00,6c,00,00,00 "Logoff"="CryptnetWlxLogoffEvent" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\cscdll] "DLLName"="cscdll.dll" "Logon"="WinlogonLogonEvent" "Logoff"="WinlogonLogoffEvent" "ScreenSaver"="WinlogonScreenSaverEvent" "Startup"="WinlogonStartupEvent" "Shutdown"="WinlogonShutdownEvent" "StartShell"="WinlogonStartShellEvent" "Impersonate"=dword:00000000 "Asynchronous"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\ScCertProp] "DLLName"="wlnotify.dll" "Logon"="SCardStartCertProp" "Logoff"="SCardStopCertProp" "Lock"="SCardSuspendCertProp" "Unlock"="SCardResumeCertProp" "Enabled"=dword:00000001 "Impersonate"=dword:00000001 "Asynchronous"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\Schedule] "Asynchronous"=dword:00000000 "DllName"=hex(2):77,00,6c,00,6e,00,6f,00,74,00,69,00,66,00,79,00,2e,00,64,00,\ 6c,00,6c,00,00,00 "Impersonate"=dword:00000000 "StartShell"="SchedStartShell" "Logoff"="SchedEventLogOff" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\sclgntfy] "Logoff"="WLEventLogoff" "Impersonate"=dword:00000000 "Asynchronous"=dword:00000001 "DllName"=hex(2):73,00,63,00,6c,00,67,00,6e,00,74,00,66,00,79,00,2e,00,64,00,\ 6c,00,6c,00,00,00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\SensLogn] "DLLName"="WlNotify.dll" "Lock"="SensLockEvent" "Logon"="SensLogonEvent" "Logoff"="SensLogoffEvent" "Safe"=dword:00000001 "MaxWait"=dword:00000258 "StartScreenSaver"="SensStartScreenSaverEvent" "StopScreenSaver"="SensStopScreenSaverEvent" "Startup"="SensStartupEvent" "Shutdown"="SensShutdownEvent" "StartShell"="SensStartShellEvent" "PostShell"="SensPostShellEvent" "Disconnect"="SensDisconnectEvent" "Reconnect"="SensReconnectEvent" "Unlock"="SensUnlockEvent" "Impersonate"=dword:00000001 "Asynchronous"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\termsrv] "Asynchronous"=dword:00000000 "DllName"=hex(2):77,00,6c,00,6e,00,6f,00,74,00,69,00,66,00,79,00,2e,00,64,00,\ 6c,00,6c,00,00,00 "Impersonate"=dword:00000000 "Logoff"="TSEventLogoff" "Logon"="TSEventLogon" "PostShell"="TSEventPostShell" "Shutdown"="TSEventShutdown" "StartShell"="TSEventStartShell" "Startup"="TSEventStartup" "MaxWait"=dword:00000258 "Reconnect"="TSEventReconnect" "Disconnect"="TSEventDisconnect" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\wlballoon] "DLLName"="wlnotify.dll" "Logon"="RegisterTicketExpiredNotificationEvent" "Logoff"="UnregisterTicketExpiredNotificationEvent" "Impersonate"=dword:00000001 "Asynchronous"=dword:00000001 Log for VX2.BetterInternet File Finder (msg126) Files Found--- Additional Files--- Keys Under Notify--- crypt32chain cryptnet cscdll ScCertProp Schedule sclgntfy SensLogn termsrv wlballoon Guardian Key--- is called: User Agent String--- ==================================================================== Log was analyzed using KRC HijackThis Analyzer - Yep, it's clean.
Make sure to update Windows and Internet Explorer at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Your log is clean. If you disabled System Restore, make sure to enable it now. To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent and use the tools provided. Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Paul:
I would like to "Pound Home" Kev's (greyknight17's) suggestion that you update both XP and IE6 and install those recommend programs from the link he provided. As this is your clients PC...make sure it's fully protected before sending it back to them otherwise you will be doing this all again at some point. You may need to take some time and explain to them how to scan for spyware, tools to use..ect and how to update regularly those programs you installed. G/L!

Good morning!
Thank you again for all your assistance. I have already installed Spybot, Adware, and MS Beta Spyware tools. Because of the infections, I was afraid to hook it up to our network, but now that it is fixed, I will perform the updates. I also installed AVG for virus protection. Hopefully these programs will help to keep him out of trouble in the future. Also, I hope just the idea of being without his computer for a couple of weeks will make him think twice when he is surfing the web. Again, thank you for all the assistance, it is greatly appreciated, and I hope I never need it again, though with the way teachers use their PCs around here, I suspect sooner or later one of them will download something nasty.
