Slow Comp/Pop ups/Malware alerts

Just recently my computer has been running slower than usual. Programs like Firefox take longer to load and I get a few pop ups. My AVG virus protection found "Trojan horse IH and II" and also "Exploit Rogue Scanner. type 871 ". Periodically AVG finds a virus and when I click "Move to Vault" it states , "File not found" as if the virus/malware is hiding. On start up I get a RunDll message saying, "c:\windows\system32\sevohaka.dll" not found. Maybe that means something to you. Thank you in advance for your help.

Here is the DDS and Attach.zip is included:

Re: Slow Comp/Pop ups/Malware alerts

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
    How to disable AVG

Please open the AVG 8 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG 8 icon on task bar.

    * Click on Tools.
    * Select Advanced Settings.
    * In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
    * In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
    * To re-enable AVG 8, please select "Enable Resident Shield" again.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

# Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: Please make sure that your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done that.

Re: Slow Comp/Pop ups/Malware alerts

Thank you so much. I followed your instructions and I found significant improvement. I don't know how my computer got so slow because I mostly downloaded small files from trusted sites. I am just worried that somewhere someone has key logged my passwords to financial institutions. I guess there is nothing I can do about it except contact you guys. Thanks again. Here is my new log. Let me know if there is anything else I should do to clean everything out of my comp.

BTW your response time was great.

Re: Slow Comp/Pop ups/Malware alerts

Hi,

Quote:
I don't know how my computer got so slow because I mostly downloaded small files from trusted sites.
Downloading files is always risky.

Quote:
I am just worried that somewhere someone has key logged my passwords to financial institutions.
I am not seeing any evidence of that now, but it won't harm to change your passwords.

-----------------------

Please uninstall the following via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel:

LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 1.90 (Symantec Corporation)
Norton Internet Security

Even if not active, it's not a good idea to have more than one antivirus installed. Since you have AVG9 installed, please remove them:

-----------------------

Azureus and BitTorrent 3.4.2 are p2p file sharing programs. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Please read this sticky:

Perils of P2P File Sharing

As suggested in our
NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help page.

Quote:
  • p2p programs like uTorrent, Bittorrent, LimeWire, Morpheus, etc., as they are a major conduit for malware and a likely source of your current issues. See this link
----------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 17 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) - JRE 6 Update 17 -"
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u17 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
    in your case.
  • Check (highlight) the above item
  • Click on Uninstall.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

--------------------------

Adobe Reader 7.0.5

Your Adobe Reader is out of date. You may want to uninstall it and download the latest version, Adobe® Reader® 9.1.

=============================
  • Open notepad (Start>All programs>accessories>notepad ) (It must be notepad, not wordpad, or it won’t work)
  • Copy the entire contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as CFScript.txt
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop
  • Click Format and ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

========================================

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings. Uncheck Mail databases.
  • Next, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

Note for Internet Explorer 8 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

========================================

Please post back the Combofix.txt and the Kaspersky report. Also let me know how the computer is behaving now.

Re: Slow Comp/Pop ups/Malware alerts

Hi,

I was still with you. I was trying to do the Kaspersky online scanner the last few days because it took so long that I interrupted it a few times. I followed your instructions to update some of the things I had and rerun the Combofix too. My computer is about the same as it was the last time you helped me with it - just fine. I think Combofix took care of most of not all of the bugs of my system. I was surprised to see that Kaspersky did not find one threat so that's good. The only thing is that I could not find the following on Add/Remove programs that you wanted me to remove. I am wondering where you saw those because I couldn't find them: (Let me know if that's all I should do if cleaning is complete) Thanks.

LiveUpdate 1.90 (Symantec Corporation)

Re: Slow Comp/Pop ups/Malware alerts

Hi,

Glad to hear that everything is just fine.

Quote:
The only thing is that I could not find the following on Add/Remove programs that you wanted me to remove. I am wondering where you saw those because I couldn't find them: (Let me know if that's all I should do if cleaning is complete) Thanks.

LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 1.90 (Symantec Corporation)
Norton Internet Security
Those were taken from the Attach.txt of your initial post. Could you have uninstalled them after you posted? If they are not there, there's nothing to worry about then.

If you have no further malware issues, you're all set to go. The logs are clean.
  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

It’s vital that you keep all your software up-to-date as older versions may have some security vulnerabilities. Secunia Software Inspector Scan can help you find out which programs need to be updated.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Happy Surfing and Think Prevention!

Re: Slow Comp/Pop ups/Malware alerts

Thank you. I uninstalled Combofix. Your approach to cleaning my computer was so thorough. Hopefully I won't be posting for a while.
