Need help removing Vundo Trojan

Mcafee said I have it, but can't fully get rid of it. After putzing around on some forums, I was led to the mcafee help site, which led me here. Hopefully this is the end. :P Currently my computer is a lot slower and has random popups via internet explorer. Also, before I had mcafee, spybot search and destroy, and spyware doctor. I uninstalled all but mcafee, mcafee is a version that was paid for. But aren't mcafee and spybot search and destroy different? So after these logs, should I re-install or install anything? Or just keep mcafee as my only antivirus program?

Oh, a bit more about the virus: No idea where it's from, my guess is my brother, but Iunno, may have been me accidentally. I doubt it's a download, or if it was, it wasn't one I purposely downloaded. Most of the stuff was in the folder system32 or SYSTEM32. Someone said it was odd that I have 2 system32 folders. Which one is the one that's legit?

Also, I use firefox.

Anyway, here are my logs:

Re: Need help removing Vundo Trojan

Edit: This is taking awhile. Right when i opened it, it did a scan, but everything was checked. took a few minutes. Now, I uncheck what I was told to uncheck, and now it's taking a loonnnnggg time. It never asked me to do a full scan, I just clicked scan... is this right and it just takes awhile?

Re: Need help removing Vundo Trojan

Ok, that took awhile.. maybe I accidentally did a fullscan.

Anyway, here are the gmer results.

So..

Step 1: In first post.

Step 2: Attached. The file ended up being called ark... I don't think that matters? It has the attach and ark in it.
NOTE: I ran dds once, forgot to get the attach, so I ran it again to get the attach. If you want, the 2nd dds text that I post here is posted at the bottom of this post. My guess is it's the same, as all I've done between them is updated this topic and ran the gmer scan.

Step 3: No, I don't think I do.

DDS 2nd scan, goes with the zip. The first one is not the same scan as where I got the attach zip.

Re: Need help removing Vundo Trojan

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications as they may otherwise interfere with our tools.
    How to disable McAfee:
    • Please open McAfee Security Centre
    • Under Common Tasks click on Home
    • Click Computer Files
    • Click Configure
    • Make sure the following are disabled by ticking the "Off" button.
      Virus protection
      Spyware protection
      System Guards Protection
Script Scanning Protection (you may have to scroll down to see it)
    • Next, select never for "When to re-enable real time scanning"
    • and click OK.

Further info on disabling and re-enabling McAfee: http://help.aol.com/help/microsites/...ernalID=222820
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

# Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: Please make sure that your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled before connecting to internet again.

Re: Need help removing Vundo Trojan

First time I ran it, all went well up until it configured the log report, and it did restart my comp. Then it had an error, pretty much stopped.

So I closed it, ran it again, worked fine, didn't restart either.

Here's the log:

EDIT: The first time it deleted a few files in system32, where the virus was. I'm not sure if it did the 2nd time, I went to get a snack. :P

Re: Need help removing Vundo Trojan

Hi,

How is the computer behaving now?

There is a couple of minor issues that needs to be taken care of but let's have an online scan first to look for any remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings. Uncheck Mail databases.
  • Next, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

Note for Internet Explorer 8 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Re: Need help removing Vundo Trojan

It's sped up by a ton now. Still more lag then when before I got the virus, but a ton less than before I ran that.

I got everything downloaded, but don't have time to run the scan today, so I'll do that tomorrow and post the log.

Re: Need help removing Vundo Trojan

Hi,

Good results. The infected items are in the quarantine folder of Combofix which will be dealt with when Combofix is uninstalled shortly.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs):

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

These are all outdated and security risks by having them installed still. . Java(TM) 6 Update 15 can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts.

=====================

Adobe Reader 8.1.2 is also outdated. You may want to uninstall it and download the latest version, Adobe® Reader® 9.1.

================================

If you have no further malware issues, you're all set to go. The logs are clean.
  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

It’s vital that you keep all your software up-to-date as older versions may have some security vulnerabilities. Secunia Software Inspector Scan can help you find out which programs need to be updated.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Happy Surfing and Think Prevention!

Re: Need help removing Vundo Trojan

Thank you very very very much.

All is running well now.

Just one thing- I updated java yesterday, and when I tried it today it said I already have the latest version of java, b/c I just updated. So I uninstalled the stuff you said, but didn't install any new java or anything, as it said I have the latest version...

Re: Need help removing Vundo Trojan

You're welcome. Glad to hear that all is running well now and that we were able to help.

As for Java, since you already updated it (should be update 17), you should be fine.

Stay safe!
