Fake Anti-Virus pop-up

For the last month or so I have randomly encountered pop ups when surfing. These pop ups claim that my pc is infected, and advise that I install a specific software (for $xx) in order to remove the infection.

I have not installed the software intentionally, but in attempting to exit the pop up I beleive some malware may have been loaded. I have ran a scan with mcaffee, spybot S&D and Malwarebytes, but to no avail.

The computer is becoming increasingly slow, and in my firewall logs I have noticed hundreds of individual IP's trying to connect to my pc on port (TCP) 18610.

I'm an using firefox 3.0.15, on Win XP SP3, and have access to a full install disc for Win XP.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Fake Anti-Virus pop-up

Hi and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your logs are clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

Please do not install or uninstall any programmes, or run any other scanners or software, unless I specifically ask you to do so. Also please copy and paste logs into the thread, rather than add them as attachments.

Combofix
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

and rename it to stirling.exe before saving it to your desktop.

Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished it will produce a log at C:\ComboFix.txt for you
  • Please include the log in your next reply.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for taking up the case. I'll download/rename/run combo and paste the logs as soon as I return from work tonight.

Re: Fake Anti-Virus pop-up

Hi,

I ran combofix after renaming the exe - before the scan started I was prompted with a message -

This PC "Does not have windows recovery console installed" Without this installed combofix will not search some of the more serious threats.

Click yes to connect to internet and download missing console. Click no to continue.

I selected no. - shall I enable the recovery console and rescan - or will the attached scan suffice?

Regards

Re: Fake Anti-Virus pop-up

Hi again

We need to install the Recovery Console. This will help us restore your system in the event of a serious crash. It's very simple to complete and will only take a few moments. It may also be useful in the future

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scroll down to Step 1, and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Re: Fake Anti-Virus pop-up

Hi again

Good job – the Recovery Console is your safety net – we can repair/restore your system from there if something untoward happens.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Combofix

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the box below into it:

Code:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/virus-trojan-spyware-help/427648-fake-anti-virus-pop-up.html

Collect::[4]
c:\windows\system32\76C18BEC04.sys
c:\windows\system32\C18FEF43D8.sys
Save this as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. This may cause it to stall.

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. Using the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

Online Scan

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner.

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

This animation will guide you through the process:

**Note**

To optimise scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post back with the Kaspersky Log.

Re: Fake Anti-Virus pop-up

Evening Iain,

When I ran ComboFix with the script - it prompted about an update available for ComboFix but I declinned, as I thought a new version might not be compatible?

Kaspersky online scan was completed - albeit on the second attempt - the first failed after encountering the below error during the initial downloading stage:

File download: index/master.xml.klz

Error 1:

Update has failed The program could not be started. Please close the window of Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 and start the program again from the web site of Kaspersky Lab. Successful updating of Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 and scanning of your computer requires uninterrupted Internet connection. Please make sure that the Internet connection is established. [ERROR: Invalid file signature]

---------------------------------------------------------
Error 2:

File download: bases/five/avc/kavset.xml
Invalid file signature: bases/five/avc/kavset.xml

The second error was also encountered during the initial download stage, however it didn't crash this time.

Please find attached the Kasperky scan log (which appears not to have found any problems)

Regards

Hi

Did CF run at all? It has a routine to check if a newer version of itself is available, but saying 'No' means it will continue with the existing version.

It's very important that you run CF using the CFScript - there are still bad files on your system.

Re: Fake Anti-Virus pop-up

Hi again

Lol – you did have me worried for a moment…

All your logs are clean. If there are no more problems we’ll just tidy up and I’ll let you go, along with my recommendations for staying safe and secure.

The following procedure will clear out the tools we've used as well as the backups and quarantines created by the fix. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point.

Referring to the image below

Click Start > Run and copy/paste, or type the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

General Protection

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.

Ad-aware 2008 Free Edition

Download and install Ad-Aware 2008 Free Edition. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

SnoopFree

SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen. Note that SnoopFree is only for XP systems.

MVPS Hosts File

The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file.

Alternate Browsers
Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer
Firefox
Opera
Chrome
Maxthon
Safari

Other Protection
Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer.

Web of Trust
WOT warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

ERUNT & NTREGOPT
ERUNT is a programme that will create automatic backups of your Registry. These backups can be used to help restore your system in the event of a serious crash.
NTREGOPT will compact and optimise your Registry, to assist the smooth running of your system.

Additional Reading
In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

Re: Fake Anti-Virus pop-up

Hi Iain,

Thanks for your help over the last week. I have a couple of questions if you have the time?

1) The two sys files that were deleted - were they the infection?

2) My firewall logs still show large numbers of refused connections on port 18610, will these cease over time or do you think its symptomatic of a remaing infection?

Cheers

Stirling

Re: Fake Anti-Virus pop-up

Hi

Those two files were indeed part of the infection - there was also a rogue service installed. Very often such a service keeps an eye on the infector files.

Sounds like your firewall is doing it's job. Since I last received a programme update my firewall has blocked over 32000 intrusion attempts. Hackers look for open ports all over the web - the fact that your firewall is refusing the connections is good news.
