Hi,
Recently I re-installed reinstalled my os's on 3 partitions. Ubuntu studio, Xp pro sp3, and xp pro 64 sp2. the install went great. while in xp pro I downloaded a suspicious file by accident and 1 day later I could not do the following things: copy or paste, if i minimized a window it would not stay on the task bar, it's like it vanished into thin air. I could not use IE or get into my Firewall and could not right click the task bar to get Task manager. Icons I use to have on the desktop and in my program files changed to the default icon for windows .exe application. I received many errors such as windows firewall gave(Windows Firewall Settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running) system restore gave(system restore is not able to protect your computer please restart and try again). well I was able to download Mozilla before I totally lost the ability to bring up Internet explorer.I tried installing the following: Mbam, Hijack this, Norman Mal-ware cleaner, ATF, pybot search an destroy, dds, root repeal, gmer, Mcafee scanner, smitfraud fix, AVG,Combo fix!, spy no more and super anti spyware. Some of these programs would not install. I don't remember the exact error but it was along the lines of 'you are missing this file'. Some programs would install but during the scan would disappear. If i tried to run hte scan again it would do the same thing. Bootting into safe mode I was not able to start up any of the programs. still could not cut an paste. It wasn't until I ran Combo fix that I felt like things were completely back to normal. OK if you have read all this thank you. My question is I need to make sure the virus is really gone, my registry cleaned of all the possible gunk; basically I just need to make sure there is no remnants of whatever it was left in the system. In the meanwhile I will be running some scans in safe mode with Mbam, hijack this, an spybot to remove any possible other issues that may be there. thanks you in advance for your help. |
