[SOLVED] Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
First, I want to thank all the volunteers for helping everyone! This is a great site and it's a God Sent gift for
someone like me! Second, I want to emphasize that I am a novice tech person. SO would you PLEASE explain everything step by step (sorry- not too computer savvy, at all). Please speak in everyday language. Thanks. Okay, so I am 99% sure I have a virus or.. trojan hoarse(?). PLEASE HELP!! It's as if someone is remotely controlling my pc! While I am using the computer, my window's start menu will pop-up, random programs are opened (anyhting from MS WORD, Notepad, new browser window and go to a new site which I've never visited before, etc.). I can't do anything to stop it but to just trun off my pc to stop this from happening. It happens several times a day. I thought it was only when I am connected to an internet but it still happens when I have unplugged the LAN line! Before this started happening, I had Norton Virus 2006 on all the time when using my pc(but not upto date on virus since January 2009- didn't renew my subscription). Also, I was accessing the internet via wireless router. I don't know how to set-up a password for my wireless router so I left it nprotected. So once this started happening, I disconnected my wireless router and used just LAN line but it continued. Also, before this phenomenon started to occur, I was visiting a site similar to YOUTUBE, but a Chinese site- hxxp://v.yoku.com to watch videos. It's not a p2p- I never downloaded anything but watched the videos online(could this still cause virus? I want to know if this was the site that caused it- so I'll know not to visit again in the future. but I didn't download anything!). It was when I was visiting this site that I noticed this happening to my pc- someone randomly remote accessing my pc. I stopped going to that site but it continued. Like I said, it still happens even when I have unplugged the LAN line. Since this "remote controlling my pc" thing began, I ran my Norton(remember, it was installed BEFORE this my pc was infected) to scan my hard drive and it found NOTHING. I did a full system scan and NOthing was found. At this point, I wasn't sure if my pc was infected(sorry- not too computer savvy) so I let several days pass by. Then I notice my pc freezing more often so I posted for a help on yahoo forum and someone told me to install an AVAST(amalwarebyte???)(this was before I found your site). I downloaded AVAST through cnet and then ran the oftware. It did a full system scan during re-booting process of my pc. IT FOUND NOTHING. After finding your site, I have uninstalled AVAST and only have the NOrton 2006 running right now. Also, since this virus thing started happening, I thought someone was accessing my PC remotely so I went into the control panel and Systems menu, then disbled the "allow remote access invitation." Of course, this did not help. It doesn't matter if I am connected to internet- it just randomly controls my pc all by itself- just happened! this virus just resized my notepad window as I was typeing on it and opened a new program on it's own! I got an email from PAYPAL account about 3 days after this "remotly controlling my pc" started happening. They said that someone has been accessing my PAYPAL account several times and thus they put a freeze on my account. I had not used my paypal account near over a year! This is when I knew my pc was infected with something for sure! I have all of my financial datas on my pc AND I have any and all of my web email account's log-in ID names on my pC(I know...I was stupid)!!!! I am so scared. Do I need to cancel my email accounts too? can I just change my passwords? PLEASE HELP! Since then, I backed up my pc data to a USB AND A DVD. I am scared that the datas that I have backed up are infected! I've ran AVAST and norton on these drives as well but NOthing has been detected(but then again, those 2 softwares didn't detect this virus on my pc hard drive either!). PLease help. I am running a windows xp. It's a SONY VAIO SZ series notebook and it didn't come with a boot disc. This notebook has a hidden recovery partition. I can restore C- drive to a factory condition by hitting f10(or f8?? unsure) key While starting CHOOSE Restore C drive Option to format the comp. Is this going to be a problem(that I don't have a bootable CD)? If so, I may be able to obtain a recovery disk using SONY software but unsure(I have to contact SONY). I hear that the virus could still remian even after I re-install the hard drive..is that true? I am so scared! Please help. I am in major crisis with all of my financial and email datas exposed! I thank you SO VERY MUCH for having read this LONG post and hope to hear from you soon. Desperately, June PS: by the way, since I've experienced this virus, remotely contrlling my pc experience, whenI try to open MS word program, it gave me a following warning message. I am posting this because your site said to post everything in detail. MS word showed me this message and I clicked on diable this add-on. However, I never added this add-on before. Message from MS word: "word experienced a serious error the last time the add-in "c:\documents and settings\jc\applicationdata\microsoft\wrd\startup\word code cleaner.dot" was opened. Would you like to disable this add in? TO reactivete this add-in, click About Microsoft office word on the help menu, and then click disabled items" I chose "diable this add-in. ============================= below I am posting my DDS.txt - copy/pasted directly into Reply box. have I attached the attach and ark files correctly? again, i have built in booting ability but do not have bootable disk. is that a problem? Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Hello June and welcome.
I know this is scary, I'll get you through it. The first thing you need to do is get to a known clean computer and change all your login and passwords to any financial sites you frequent. Do not use the affected computer to access any of those sites again, until we've cleaned it up. Quote:
I'd like to take a deeper look. Please download rsit.exe and save it to your desktop.

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Hi Reid, thanks for getting to my post so promptly! I am so happy you are here to help
Btw, my English is my second language so my apology for my poor grammer in advance. Per your instruction, I've run the RSIT.exe and attaching the two files. I just wanted to inform you that I picked 3months under the RSIT menu- it asked for me to choose how many months of logs it wanted me to perform. One more thing, if there are file names in the file directories, with its name appearing to be in all question marks(like this-->c:\??????.ext\????\....), it seems to be doing this with some Korean software programs I've installed. It could be infected files as well- since I could have been infected by a virus program written in Korean(I am a USA citizen but visiting Korea at the moment, hence used Korean internet server). I thought it was worth mentioning it. Should I uninstall any and all Korean softwares(I don't need them)? Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Dear Reid,
I unplugged the LAN line while I was running the RSIT.exe and recording the log and info files. I thought it was better to unplug my internet connection while running the program. Was I suppose to be connected to internet connection? Just wondering because I saw that in the log.txt that it says "HijackThis download failed" Just to be clear going forward, should I be connected to internet connection when performing any actions you tell me to do? |

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Hi June, I just got online. Please give me several minutes to go over your logs and I'll have the next set of instructions for you.
In answer to your question - yes, keep internet connection unless I mention otherwise. In this case it did not do any harm because the section I want to see, HJT portion would not be reporting.

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Okay June, let's get started. Please keep internet connected.
![]() Download ComboFix from one of these locations: Link 1 Link 2 * IMPORTANT- Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop ==================================================== Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications as they will interfere with our tools and the removal. ==================================================== Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures. ![]() Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message: ![]() Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review. |

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Hi Reid, per your instruction, I've ran the combofix.
I did turn off my Norton 2006 off(it only has an option to disable for "until system restarts") before running the combofix. However, it seem to be running while combofix was running because when comofix was trying to create a log file, the notrton internet program popped a window asking, "do you want to allow COmbofix to connect?" I clicked allow this program to connect. Did this hinder what you needed me to do? should I run it again? I can try to turn off the norton properly this time. =============== ComboFix 09-10-30.01 - jc 10/31/2009 12:16.1.2 - NTFSx86 Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2046.1328 [GMT 9:00] Running from: c:\documents and settings\jc\Desktop\ComboFix.exe AV: Norton Internet Security 2006 *On-access scanning disabled* (Outdated) {E10A9785-9598-4754-B552-92431C1C35F8} FW: Norton Internet Security 2006 *enabled* {7C21A4C9-F61F-4AC4-B722-A6E19C16F220} FW: Norton Internet Worm Protection *disabled* {990F9400-4CEE-43EA-A83A-D013ADD8EA6E} * Created a new restore point . Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Hi June, no worries - you did great when you instructed Norton to allow ComboFix to connect.
ComboFix seems to have handled the malware that was present. What we need to do now is run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, (several hours) so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course: Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner **Note** To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Dear Reid,
before I carryout your above instruction, is there's anyway to check if the CD-rom in the CD drive and USB, in which I have backed up my files and data, are also infected as well? Do i connect them while running the on-line scan? Please let me know |

Yes, connect those and set Kaspersky's online scan to scan those drives as well.

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
While I was waiting your reply, I was trying to access data from my backed up files on the CD-rom I mentioned. Just as I begin to access those files, the "remote accessing" thing began and forze my pc. I rebooted my pc. Does this mean files on my cd-rom is infected? is there's anyway to salvage the data on this CD (and the USB)? Because I had to delete these backed up files from my current hard drive hence these are my only copies.
Thanks |

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
My apologies for the delay, we are having quite a wind storm here and my internet got knocked out for a bit.
![]() You will have to scan the other drives separately. First, scan My Computer and save that report to your desktop. You should then be able to click 'Folders' just below 'My Computer'. In the pop up box that appears, click the letter of the drive that has your backups, then click OK, then Scan. Save that report as well. Repeat for as many different drive letters that you have. |

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Dear Reid,
thanks for your instruction. I can't thank you enough for all of your hard work and assistance thus far! I have run the Kaspersky scan on all of my drives. Are all of my drives clean? Also you mentioned that it seems all the viruses are removed but I experienced the "remote controlling phenomenon" three times, again, while I was running Kaspersky. It tried to stop the Kaspersky scan by trying to close my browser. Also, music started playing out of no where! only thing I have opened was the Kaspersky scan. I couldn't stop the music! Please help....Is it hiding somewhere? below are my Kaspersky reports... Sincerely, June |

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
sorry- I could upload the files- the virus was freezing my pc!
Also my pc is freezing often now. The CPU usage goes from 5% to 70% by itself when the computer freezes and then back to 4%.... |

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Unfortunately, there's nothing of note in any of the Kaspersky results.
Where did you download this from? Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional - Korean Also, I'd like to take a look with another tool. Please download System Repair Engineer. On that webpage, scroll down to the second download. 1. Extract it to Desktop & double click SREngLdR.exe to run it 2. Look toward the bottom and tick "Verify Digital Signatures". 3. Select 'Smart Scan' & 4. Click on the [Scan] button 5. When finished, click on the [Save Reports] button & save the log to Desktop 5. Attach the log in your next reply. Dont post it. You may have to rename SREngLOG.log to SREngLOG.txt to upload it. I do need some sleep. I'll reply to your response as soon as I can. In the meantime, disconnect this PC from the internet after you've posted. If you don't have another computer to check here for my replies, then reconnect to the internet and check back approximately 6 hours from now. |

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Dear Reid,
Thank you for all of your hard work and assistance. I hope you get some much needed sleep! I don't have a different pc so I'll diconnect after posting this and check back in 6 hours. I am posting the System Repair Engineer log text below as an attachment. While I was running it, it asked the following: System Repair Engineer has detected a valid 3rd party upload plug-in which have valid digital signatures in Upload sub-directory. When you use "Cpoy suspicious files to SuspiciousFiles sub directory automatically" function, System Repair will send the information to the 3rd party upload plug-in in background automatically. I didn't click that option "Cpoy suspicious files to SuspiciousFiles sub directory automatically". Should I have done so? Aslo, following are what happened since my last post. IE and firefoc opened up all by itself and Norton gave me the following messages(I set up Norton so that it'll ask my permission for certain outbound traffics). Message from attck #1 An unrecognized program is attempting to use msmsg.exe to connect to a computer at 168.126.63.1 using port 0. program: msmsgs.exe path: C:\Program Files\Messenger\ date and time: 10/31/2009.... Launcher:C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe Remote address:168.126.63.1 : 53 Local address:192.168.10.5 : 0 Protocol: UDP Location: default message from attack #2: An unrecognized program is attempting to use msmsg.exe to connect to a computer at 168.126.63.1 using port 0. program: javaw.exe path:C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\ date and time: 10/31/2009.... launcher: C:\program files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe Remote address:168.126.63.1 : 53 Local address:192.168.10.5 : 0 Protocol: UDP Location: default Message from attck #3 An unrecognized program is attempting to use iexplore.exe to connect to a computer at 168.126.63.1 using port 0. program: iexplore.exe path: C:\Programs File\Internet Explorer\ date and time: 10/31/2009 Launcher: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat... Remote address:168.126.63.1 : 53 Local address:192.168.10.5 : 0 Protocol: UDP Location: default Also, the adobe acrobat 7.0 Korean is from my previous work. It belongs to my co-worker but it's NOT an illegal copy, I don't believe. It has proper key code(I believe it's proper- there's no crack script). I installed this program way before all of these symptoms happened and it didn't cause any problems before. Should I delete this program, just in case? Reid, my mouse is freezing up and my pc is crashing every 5 mintues now. someone has created new toolbars and changed my screensaver all by itself! It's officially crazy! I am afraid that if it gets any worse, I won't be able to log into your site to obtain further help! Would you recommend that I just reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything? Where is this thing hiding? Help me.... |

Re: Help! my financial accounts have been accessed! Nasty Virus!
Hi Reid, was just wondering...
what are those message from Norton? Is someone trying to use these programs to access the internet from my pc? Just to be clear, I never use MS messenger service!.Also I wasn't using IE nor firefox during this time when these messages from Norton kept popping open. Whose IP address are those listed in the message? SHould I allow these attempts to connect or keep blocking them? Lastly, was I suppose to remove that file mentioned by Kaspersky? It did say it detected the following suspicious program but I didn't let Kaspersky fix the problem from C drive. Was I suppose to remove it using Kaspersky? File name / Threat / Threats count C:\WINDOWS\system32\nprotect\temp\npnuninst.exe.npz Suspicious: Password-protected-EXE Thanks so much and I'll check back in 5 hours Last edited by jkchoi24; 10-31-2009 at 03:47 AM. |
