HBKiller malware suspected.
Recently, I plugged an external hard drive into a computer infected with some HBKiller malware which at that point of time I did not know it contained.
Upon plugging the same drive back into my own computer running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, the autorun asks if I would like to run "Wscript.exe" instead of starting Windows Media Player and the like. If I click it, error message will follow; "C:\Wscript.exe not found" or something along those lines. Attempting to open the drive from My Computer will also produce the same error message. The only way to access files is to manually type in the directory such as "K:\". Only trace of this malare is single html file titled "HBKiller.js" in K:\ root directory which, if opened, turns out to be a crappy offline html page with lots of pop ups and malay language. Currently the computer is functioning as per normal and does not appear to be infected (external drive has been disconnected). HijackThis log is attached. Have followed instructions such as those found here ( http://www.notasaja.com/2009/03/1.html) but am unable to find any trace of it either in the registry or C:\Windows directory. C:\ root also does not contain said "Wscript.exe". Can anyone determine if my computer is infected and how I can remove the malware from the external hard drive without losing the information on it? I have multiple computers at my disposal. Regards, Bill. Re: HBKiller malware suspected.
Hello and Welcome to TSF.
We no longer use HijackThis as our initial analysis tool. We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link I'll give you below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and a Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here: NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new topic, as this one shall be closed. If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply. Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.
