Funky language in a semi-transparent gray box on my desktop

Hello! I have my daughters laptop, Dell Inspiron 1520 with XP. It will boot, but there is a semi-transparent gray box in the lower right hand corner with some kind of strange foreign language dialog in it. The task manager has been disabled and it will not connect to the internet. I've run a scan with the Trend Micro Client Server AV and it found nothing. I ran a malwarebytes scan which also found nothing. I've tried safe mode, and that gray box covers the whole screen so I can't click on anything. I can't get on-line to download Spybot or do anything else... any help would be appreciated!!

Re: Funky language in a semi-transparent gray box on my desktop

Hi,

You'll need to get some tools and transfer them to the system with issues. If you're going to use flash memory then better make sure it doesn't get infected (in case the problematic system has a flash infection).

1. Download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your Desktop of your clean system.
2. After downloading, double-click on Flash_Disinfector to run it.
3. Just follow the prompts and continue until it begin scanning.
4. If asked to insert your flash drive or any removable device including USB Pen Drive and Memory Stick, please do so.
5. It will scan removable drives, wait for the scan to finish. Done.

___

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
  • Double-click .exe that you downloaded
  • Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
  • Don't check
    Show All
    box while scanning in progress!
  • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
  • This copies log to clipboard
  • Post log in your reply.

Re: Funky language in a semi-transparent gray box on my desktop

Hi and thanks for the reply. I ended up taking it to someone who's a lot more knowledgable than me... the kid will have to pay to get it fixed, but that's the consequence of not taking proper care, isn't it?? Thanks again!
