Hello and Welcome to TSF.

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

------------------------------------------------------

While Spybot's TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent tools from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your logs are clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click Advanced mode if not already selected.
  • Choose Yes at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the Tools menu.
  • Click Resident.
  • Uncheck the Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active. box.
  • If TeaTimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the Allow Change box when prompted.
  • In the File menu click Exit to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
------------------------------------------------------

If for some reason during these fixes you receive prompts from Spybot about whether to Allow or Deny any changes, please Allow them all.

------------------------------------------------------

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Thanks for your help.

My avast will not restart, noting a problem with skins
I am thinking of removing avast and reinstalling.
I will not do this until this thread is concluded as it might be a
further symptom.

Re: Please help with Lenovo _cpnprt2 trojan

Hello John Suchy. I'm not seeing anything in your logs. Are you still experiencing the same problems?

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring]
"DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
Save the file as fix.reg and choose to Save as type: - All Files then close the Notepad file.
It should look like this:

Double-click on fix.reg and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. Please delete the file afterwards.

------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at any Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected.
  • It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

Re: Please help with Lenovo _cpnprt2 trojan

Hello Chemist,

I have completed all tasks except for the Kaspersky Online scanner.

When I go to the website, A prompt appears that says the computer requires
Java framework 1.5 to work.
Clicking on the download and save the program reports that the java
framework is already installed.
when returned to the website the same request, and same response. this time
I selected reinstall. upon return the accept as usual was greyed out.
There still appears to be something in the computer that disallows updates,
avast, windowsupdates, java.

Re: Please help with Lenovo _cpnprt2 trojan

Hello Chemist,

Thanks for the Photobucket reference... java was turned off.
I ran the kaspersky utility. Under the heading computer there were no
threats found. I tried to click on report to send it to you but I recieved none.
I went to www.windowsupdate.com to get any updates but the information bar did not show under the addressbar. I have never seen the infomation bar
not come up when downloading a file before. an activex control needs to be installed. I suppose without the activex control the site does not recognize
a request for updates. The computer is set for automatic updates. I hope
updates can be downloaded. since I was able to get the atf utility the computer seems able to download files. perhaps you mightsuggest a benign file to test download functionality and/or activex settings in the browser.
Thank you for your kind consideration and efforts to solve this problem.
There must be some special place where people like you are made.

Re: Please help with Lenovo _cpnprt2 trojan

Hello again, John Suchy. Can you update MBAM?
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Under the Update tab, click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart your computer.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy/Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Re: Please help with Lenovo _cpnprt2 trojan

Good morning Chemist

I was able to update mbam last night. There were no viruses found. Windows update still does not offer an activex control to view the site.
I do not know what all the settings are within the browser ie, accelerators,
java, addons and how to control them, but I am willing to learn.

Re: Please help with Lenovo _cpnprt2 trojan

Go to Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons...

See if any Microsoft Add-ons are disabled. If so, enable them.

Any difference?

Try rebooting and let me know. Did you also restore advanced settings under the Advanced tab?

Re: Please help with Lenovo _cpnprt2 trojan

Hello again, John Suchy. Go Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > tick 'Block popups'.

Then Settings > tick "Show Information Bar when a popup is blocked' > Close > Apply > OK.

Any difference? If still no joy, please do the following(I know you've already done a lot of this):

Go Tools > Internet Options > Security and click 'Reset all zones to default level' > Apply

Click Advanced and click 'Restore advanced settings' > Apply > OK.

Close IE8 and reopen it. You should be offered several additional options in the process. Deny them all.

Any difference?

Re: Please help with Lenovo _cpnprt2 trojan

Good Evening Chemist,

I have done the settings in the privacy tab and the resets in security and advanced per your instructions.... No joy.
I went to www.windowsupdate.com an activex control is necessary to install.
no information bar is presented.
For a smile I looked at the image to insure I knew what the information bar is.
No joy

Re: Please help with Lenovo _cpnprt2 trojan

Hi Chemist,
Automatic updates are turned on. The machine is my wifes and she told me
that she didn't notice. Given that she is in the beginners fog of information
over throttle it all seems like magic to her. I have worked with computers since 1964 of one type or another and some of this stuff is baffleing to me.
No one can know each and every nuance.

Hello again, John Suchy. I suggest uninstalling IE8 and see if you can install updates using IE7:
