Lost desktop due to worm in svchost.exe file
Hi All at TSF
I am new to this forum so hope that this post is correct? I am running windows XP SP2 (I think!) and get auto updates from Microsoft. I have recently lost my desktop after running a Trend Micro scan, it quarantined a file svchost.exe due to a Worm_generic.DIT. Trend is unable to clean this file, and if I reinstate it, I get my desktop back but a warning appears every minute telling me that Trend has blocked this virus, requiring a closure of each and every warning. I can operate my computer through using windows task manager but it is not very easy for every thing. On gooooooogling it I found this post [SOLVED] My documents opening at start up Unfortunately it didn’t work – but being impressed with cooldude155 I have joined this forum to ask for help.I have tried exploring the installation disk and copying what I think is the correct file and pasting it into c:\programme files\ Microsoft common but to no avail, I am hesitant to completely reinstall from the disk due to a warning saying about it being a previous version and don’t want to go through the whole SP2 update again. Many thanks in advance PC Numpty |

Re: Lost desktop due to worm in svchost.exe file
Hello, PC Numpty and Welcome to TSF.
I understand you're having to use Task Manager, but to help you, we would need a set of logs. You should be able to perform all the steps using Task Manager, after all, the desktop (explorer.exe) is just a pretty GUI to help us, but Windows functions without it as you know. ![]() Or, reinstate the file long enough to complete the below tasks, and then allow Trend to quarantine it again. We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link I'll give you below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and a Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here: NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new topic, as this one shall be closed. I currently have as many open topics as I can effectively handle; this will have you back in queue with the proper logs so an available helper would be able to assist. If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply. Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.
