Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
Dear Administrators,
I am facing a peculiar problem. A couple of days ago, I was listening to some old youtube playlists on my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop that I had created long back. Suddenly, the screen went blue and displayed the message - fatal hardware error; contact manufacturer. It did not allow me to do anything else. Luckily, I forced a re-boot and was able to view my desktop again. But, I am really scared after this experience. My hunch is that there might be some viruses or malwares that might be the source of such problems. Or it could be that I have some fixable problem in playing media files on a continuous basis. I would like you to advise me to get my machine checked for probable causes of such messages. I want to follow your recommended steps. Thanks, Zooroopa |

Re: Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
Hello, Zooroopa.
It's more likely this is/was a hardware issue or a possible driver conflict which has already been resolved, but for malware removal assistance, which is what this forum is for, we would need to see analysis logs as indicated in the sticky topic at the top of this forum. Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here: NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help After running through all the steps, please post the requested logs. If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply. Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.

Re: Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
There is a malware service showing in the logs.
Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete. Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper at this forum. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
I have a question before proceeding with the suggested steps. I have the following anti-virus software on my computer:
Symantec AntiVirus (2006) Full Version 10.1.5.5000 This is a non-expiring software that re-enables itself on its own after sometime if I disable it manually. I saw this happening when I was running the previous step. Therefore, I re-ran the step several times to get a clean run without any interference from Symantec. I looked into the post listing steps to disable anti-virus software. I did not find an entry for this one. Could you please offer any suggestions about disabling this version of Symantec for good while Combfox is running? |

As far as Symantec AV disabling, see if this helps http://grok.lsu.edu/Article.aspx?articleId=10682 Open Symantec AntiVirus, in the left pane, click Configure, then Auto-Protect. In the right pane, uncheck Enable Auto-Protect. Recheck it to turn it back on. Other than that, I'm afraid I don't know. It may be that uninstalling it temporarily would be best if you don't know how to disable it.

Re: Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
Good job. Next steps....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
Okay, I did follow all the steps.
The bad news first. CF did not open with a message box. I waited for several minutes after CF generated its log. However, I could not see any message boxes waiting to be clicked. Another observation - when CF rebooted my laptop, certain messenger programs that were in my start-up were started. So, I had to manually kill them. Also, I had to try several times before I could successfully disable the Symantec Antivirus (after the machine rebooted). All of this happened when CF was trying to generate the log. But the good news is that CF ran and produced a log. Here is it as a zipped file (it did not allow me to copy and paste it as it exceeded the permitted character count). Also - please note that I downloaded some windows updates before I ran CF. I shall await further instructions. |

Re: Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
Thanks for the info, all seems to be well. Reason no message box appeared was no files were collected. SeekService apparently uninstalled cleanly, leaving nothing behind. Unusual, but just fine.
Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) Java(TM) 6 Update 7 This is outdated, and a security risk by having it installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall these older versions when you update, nor tell you that you should. Java(TM) 6 Update 11can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts. Going forward, Java will overwrite existing installs, so removing older versions should not be required after this. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.

Re: Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
Well, the good news is, those items found are in System Restore's cache, and will be addressed shortly.
As far as what to do about any other BSOD...monitor the machine. Sometimes BSOD are one-off events, and never happen again. If you consistently receive BSOD, then it needs be investigated. Be sure you have the machine set up to record memory dumps, and to not restart at system failure so you can record the full STOP message. AutoRestart on System Failure Go to Start >> Run - type or copy/paste control sysdm.cpl,,3 & press Enter
If there are other BSOD events which point to hardware, I'd suggest troubleshooting it in the Hardware section of the forums. From a malware perspective, we should be done here. The other items Eset found are in System Restore's cache, and will be addressed by uninstalling ComboFix as instructed below. Other than that....Some final housekeeping instructions, and protection information for you. Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. Disconnect from the internet and disable your AntiVirus temporarily. Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OKcombofix /u This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points. Re-enable your AntiVirus now. Reconnect to the internet at your leisure. Delete any remaining tools we've used (DDS and GMER) and logs from them. Empty your Recycle Bin. Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and look into the following free programs:
In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it. Re: Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
Thanks for waiting.
I followed the instructions. My machine was already set to record memory dumps. I faced one issue though! I could not uninstall combofix. It said windows could not find combofix. I scanned my entire hard drive but could not locate combofix. I am assuming that I might have accidentally deleted it. Would there be a problem with clean-up procedures and the system restore points that combofix's removal was supposed to address? I followed all other instructions and cleaned the log files and the source files of all utilities in the clean-up process. |

Re: Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
Download ComboFix once again to the desktop. Do not run it, except with this command from Run Box:
"c:\documents and settings\Partha S Sensarma\Desktop\ComboFix.exe" /u

Re: Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
Thanks. Followed instructions. Uninstalled combofix after downloading it again and saving it on the deskstop. No messages received about system restore points. Nor did I encounter other clean-up processes?
Any other steps? |

Re: Blue Screen indicating fatal hardware error on playing youtube videos
No additional messages were expected. Should just see a box saying ComboFix Uninstalled. All else is internal.
That should do it.
