My System

Hello delaney,

This is the best advice I can offer

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download and install Spybot S&D. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Click here to get the latest version of HijackThis and run it.

Before you give us a new log here, if we gave you instructions for a fix, please do the fixes first and then post the new log with this updated version.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Delaney,

I think it's an OK tool, but we have seen it miss some entries. I wouldn't "hitch my wagon to it".

That's the only entry that looks suspicious here. OK, then do the following:

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Download StartDreck http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/StartDreck.zip

Unzip to its own folder and start the program:
Press 'Config'
Press 'mark all'

Uncheck the following boxes only:
System/Running Process -> List Modules
System/Drivers -> NT Services
System/Drivers -> NT Kernel- and FS-drivers
Press 'OK'

Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application)

Post the log in this thread.

Do you have broadband (DSL or Cable) internet connection? If you do, we prefer if you do the TrendMicro online virus scan also. If not, then that's ok.

OK, give us your original hijackthis.log file only (don't analyze it). I'm just wondering if it's because you are running a lot of programs. So let's take a look at that log.

Connection and log

I have broadband and will try that link.

I did post the full HJT log (last log post). Do you need another one?

TrendMicro is clean

I also removed secret smiley plugin for AIM

Yep, you did post one. Must be going blind here

OK, check and fix these in HijackThis (just testing to see if it's the startup programs causing the problems):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Doctor] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\swdoctor.exe" /Q
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AIM] C:\PROGRA~1\AIM\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SecretSmileys] C:\PROGRA~1\SECRET~1\ss.exe
O4 - Startup: HA311 Configuration Utility (2).lnk = ?

OK, for that last entry, it's related to your NetGear card. When you have this CPU problem, are you ever connected online? Try disconnecting and see what happens next time.

Startup and secret smiley

Unistalling the secret smiley AIM program helped a bunch. Now we are back to 1 per day lock ups.

Should I do a system restore before deleting those startups?

We did not uninstall the smiley program. We just asked you to remove it so that it won't startup. Since you know what that program is for, we didn't ask you to uninstall/remove it. For now it's only not starting up.

Does it freeze if you go online using a ethernet cable instead of the wireless card? OK, try reinstalling the software/drivers for your wireless card.

PC freeze up

Before I swapped power supplies, it used to memory dump when I used the wireless card (not enough power).

I did have an issue with the wireless card because i did not install the driver in safe mode. I uninstalled the card, physically removed ithe card, restarted the PC , shut down and installed the card, then the driver in safe mode.

I have 2 PC's in the exact same config, except this PC has AIM. The other one is smoking along. Netgear swears that version 1.2 of the driver is fully compatible with XP, which I believe since the other PC is working OK, although it does not get used as much. I am running HA311 which is 802.11a (I like running at 5GHz). Maybe the 1.2 driver actually has a small memory leak that causes the issue?

On the AIM front, I am running 5.9 and have tried 5.1 as well.

Does it happen if you use a wire line instead of wireless? If you are not having problems when connected using a wire, it's most likely a problem with the card or it's drivers.

On line vs.offline

It only happens on AIM is on so I have to be online.

I can try it with a hard wire again for connetivity and see what happens. That way the HA311 is out of the loop.

Is that good idea? Ihave done it before with no better results but that was a while ago with the OEM IBM config.

Yes, it should help us diagnose the problem. If the wired connection doesn't cause any problems and the wireless one does, it's probably the wireless card or the software.

So far so good

I am going to call the hardwire good since my daughter was on it all day today.

So the Netgear guys say that the HA311 is compatible with XP but Windows does not list it as compatible. I have the latest driver and installed in safe mode.

Should I just switch to a later version of HW? WAG311 would be my choice
