Computer worm - koobface

Hey,

i recently checked my Facebook and fell over a video containing a setup.exe file disguised as a Facebook video viewer setup. My internet now keeps abandoning connection, and sometimes posts a message which says my computer has been infected. Later on, "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" is showing errors, followed by SvchoSt.exe Program error.

I ran Msconfig, and in startup i found three files diagnosed (by Virusremovalguru.com) as computer worms called "pp11.exe", "freddy58.exe" and "id12.exe".

I have great experience with this forum for being very helpful, and helping me remove trojans some time ago, and i would really apreciate it if you could help me out.

I just found the instructions thread, and is currently doing the scans.

Be sure to allow ComboFix to install the Recovery Console as part of it's routine.

Combofix reported that it wasn't able to install Recovery Console. I closed down BullGuard and the Firewall as well, but Combofix told me they were still open.

When it asked me to install the Recovery Console, i pressed "OK", and it reported there was an error installing it, and that Combofix would proceed scanning.

I closed down BullGuard Antivirus by exiting in System Tray icon, and also in the Process List in Task manager. I'm not sure about the On-access scanning, shoulnd't it be closing down along with BullGuard?

Thanks for the info. About BullGuard, and many AV, simply exiting via the system tray does not always shut down the real time protection. There may be a setting in the UI.

Regarding Recovery Console, do you recall the exact error received?

I believe this is the proper page for your OS language.

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Your machine shows Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3. (Service Pack 3. You can use the package for Microsoft Windows XP Professional service pack 2, which should be this link, if I'm correct that this is Danish language OS.

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.





Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.

As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.



Click on No.

When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Oh, it's outdated because i plugged out the internet cable to prevent the virus from spreading to a server that my computer is connected to - if that's any possible. Subscription is fine :)

Ok, great, that's a safe decision to have made. The lack of internet connection would possibly explain why ComboFix did not install Recovery Console automatically.

You should be fine to connect again so it can be updated.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 16 and save it to your desktop.
• Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) - JRE 6 Update 16 -"
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
• Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u16 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue.The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

    Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.

3. Uninstall the following via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel:

• p2p programs like uTorrent, Bittorrent, LimeWire, Morpheus, etc., as they are a major conduit for malware and a likely source of your current issues.

P2P - I see you have P2P software ( BitTorrent, LimeWire 5.1.2 ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. I deleted the old Java updates and installed the new one as instrcuted.
The computer seems to be working fine now - no pop ups and virus alerts. But the online scanner reported two infected files;

The items Eset found are in ComboFix quarantine or System Restore's cache, and will be addressed by uninstalling ComboFix as instructed below.

Disconnect from the internet and disable your AntiVirus temporarily.

Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

Re-enable your AntiVirus now. Reconnect to the internet at your leisure.

• MVPS HOST FILE
  The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.

  ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.
  
  NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.
