Zserv Trojan returned

Hi again,

I had a hijacking last week and I thought we got it. After I cleaned up with your help, I still had the Microsoft Anti-virus picking up an attempted hijack by My Search Bar. I ran the MS Anti-virus, Ad-Aware SE and Norton and eventually everything scanned clean. All weekend I was running fine other than an occasional time when links from search results (yahoo or google) would time out. Sometime Sunday, I turned on System Restore again.

Monday, the same pests were back. The usual symptom is it takes about 4-5 minutes to logon (I'm loading Norton, Zone Alarm & MS Anti-Virus). Right after everything loads on startup, MS Anti-Virus pops-up from the task bar and tells me that it has allowed navshext.dll to make changes in a green pop-up dialog. Then right behind it, MS Anti-virus tells me My Search Bar browser Plug-in is trying to install. It gives me an option to remove and I always remove it.

I got the same pop-ups about navshext.dll and My Search Bar on Tuesday. I had MS Anti-Virus scan my system and it found several of my old fiends:
- Vx2.zerv
- Begin2Search
- SurfSideKick
- Spyware.jmzxm
- Ezula.weboffer
- WinUpdt

I had it removed them. I did a scan by Trend Micro and it foung Troj_Agent.LQ and I had it remove it.

Today, I got the same pop-up about navshext.dll and My Search bar. I turned off System Restore again, Booted into Safe mode and did a bunch of scans. MS Anti-Virus found ClearSearch and another undefined possible Hijack. I removed them. After running MS Anti-virus, I ran Ad-Aware Vx2 Cleaner and it reported that my system is clean. I ran Ad-Aware system scan and it reported finding nothing. I ran Norton with virus definitions as of 2/21 and Norton reported finding nothing.

But I really got a funny feeling that they are still out there. I just don't know where to look next.

- Do you think that turning System Restore back on had something to do with it coming back?

- Do you think it might be attached somehow to Norton? It seems so strange that I get those alerts about navshext.dll just before seeing an alert about My Search Bar. Otherwise, I never get any alerts from MS anti-spyware. I have a new copy of Norton 2005. I'm thinking about removing Norton 2004 and doing a clean install of Norton 2005.

Help! Just in case, here is the latest processed HijackThis log.

Your log is clean. I see no traces of spyware here.

Empty out your Temp folders just in case they might be hiding there. Are you still getting those warnings saying My Search Bar is trying to install?

Yes, I am still getting the warnings. I just powered down and powered back up and I got the same warning. First it told me it was allowing navshext.dll and then stopped My Search Bar from installed and gave me an option to delete. I deleted it.

Hmmm, does this happen even if you are not online? If so, go offline again and try uninstalling Norton. Restart. Is it still being detected? Make sure to delete all files and folders related to Norton. Restart and reinstall Norton. See if it's still being detected now.

I went off line (unplugged from my cable modem) and it still happens even off-line. I happen to have two users on this XP Pro machine; my husband's account and my account. It only happens on my account. I will always get the warning if I log off my account, logon my husband's account and then log off and log back on to my account. It will then try to install My Search bar when I log back on. (on-line or not)

Since it happens even off-line. Do you think I should go ahead and get totally uninstall Norton and start a fresh install?

I'm also tempted to create a new user, copy over my documents and start fresh. If I do go this way, any tips for saving my Favorites?

Thanks again.

Check each account for spyware. My guess would be (since nothings in the log) these other tools are picking up the old registry entrys from the malware or their's malware under more then one account.

Thanks. I'll do some more scanning tonight. I don't think I've run the scans on his account since I cleaned up my account. I was thinking he was clean since I never got any warnings on his account but I think that was a bad assumption. This actually crossed my mind last night after posting this message. I don't think we logged on to his account during the weekend which may explain why I was running fine until Monday.

Everything is scanning clean in both George's and my user accounts. MS Anti-spyware, Ad-Aware and Norton are all clean scans. But I do still get the two alerts from MS' Anti-Spyware when I log on my account after having logged on to George's account (navshext.dll and My Search bar).

Just to be on the safe side, can you take a look at the Hijackthis log for George's account?

At this point, I'm kinda at a loss as to what to do next. It may be that the alert from MS is just a false positive. I haven't tried removing Norton and doing a new install of 2005. Other than this alert, I seem to be fine.

Thanks for your help on this mystery.

Does MS Antispyware tell you where the spyware is located?

Your log is clean. If you disabled System Restore, make sure to enable it now.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial (http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent) and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

I thought I would close the loop on this issue. I have finally solved it with some help from a user on the Microsoft Anti-spyware (MAS) newsgroups. (fingers crossed) I couldn't find any path or other useful information in logs in MAS. A user suggested looking through the registry at several different keys for the guids the toolbar uses. Most of the keys were clean but I did finally find the guid under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Toolbar \
WebBrowser

Once I deleted the value from this key, I no longer got the warning from MAS

The guids I looked for were:
{014DA6C1-189F-421a-88CD-07CFE51CFF10}
{014DA6C9-189F-421a-88CD-07CFE51CFF10}

Possible locations where:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Classes \ CLSID \

-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \
CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Browser Helper Objects \

-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Toolbar

-HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Toolbar \ WebBrowser

This would have covered My Search and My Way toolbars which are found in \Program Files\MySearch\ and \Program Files\MyWay\

Thanks again for your help.

Marta

PS: I also learned that you need to disable system restore in each user. It is probably rare that you'll come across someone like me who has two users on their PC but I made a bad assumption that turning it off in one user would have turned it off globally.
