University student with slow computer problem - HJT log inside
Hello! I'm a university student in Oregon, and I've been having peculiar problems with my PC speed. I'm usually able to fix my slow computer problems myself, but this one has got me stumped, so that is why I am posting on here. I must be missing something - but I know that running 40+ processes on my PC is definitely not good.
Anyway, see what you can do. Thanks for taking your time out to help me. I really appreciate it. -John Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2 Scan saved at 9:12:12 PM, on 2/22/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\Windows\System32\smss.exe C:\Windows\system32\winlogon.exe C:\Windows\system32\services.exe C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe C:\Windows\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\Windows\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\DefWatch.exe C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\inetinfo.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\mdm.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\SavRoam.exe C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\Rtvscan.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe C:\Program Files\Compaq\EAB\EabServr.exe C:\Program Files\Compaq\Hotkey Software\hkss.exe C:\Windows\system32\ltmsg.exe C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANT~1\VPTray.exe C:\Windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb07.exe C:\Windows\system32\loadfp.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0\bin\jusched.exe C:\Windows\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Compaq Wireless LAN\Client Manager\CMCOM.EXE C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe C:\Windows\system32\wscntfy.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Documents and Settings\New User\Desktop\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://go.compaq.com/2Q00CPT/0409/bF8.asp O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Actually, I don't see anything bad here.
A few tools to run: Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds. Download and install Spybot S&D. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation. The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes. Reboot and report back on your performance now.

I ran everything as you said and haven't noticed any significant increase in performance. I am a regular user of AdAware and Spybot S&D, so the only thing new was CleanUp!. It gave me a couple more gigs of space :-).
I guess I'll chalk this one up to a heavily-used laptop. Thanks for your help anyway. -John |
