IE will not start reliably.

In late May 2009, received from MS an update from IE 7 to IE 8. After installing update, IE opened slowly and not always on first try; it would often freeze, have to be ended with Task Manager, and then be re-started. The second try was usually successful, and once open, IE ran normally. The system began a gradual slowdown, IE starting more slowly each time. Also, after clicking a URL, there was often no response.

After posting these symptoms on the IE Forum, I was led through a series of troubleshooting steps, and then got instructions to post on this Forum.

Here are the results I got by following your instructions:

Re: IE will not start reliably.

Hi -

I don't see anything in those logs to suggest malware is the cause of the issues. I suspect a conflict between AVG, ZoneAlarm, and IE. I noticed they had you try Safe Mode with Networking, but you were unable to connect to the internet due to wireless connection. Can you use a hardwire connection for this troubleshooting step? Most machines, even those with wireless, have an ethernet port as well. It would help isolate the security software as a possible cause of the IE issue.

I see in your other thread you ran Eset online scan, it found and removed one item. I'd like to see that log, it should still be here:

C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt

Also, we can run one more tool to see if anything is found.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save it to your desktop. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware may require a reboot to complete removals. After a reboot, if required, post that saved log in your next reply.

I'll go back and read what I was instructed to do and try a hard-wired Internet connection. Will let you know what I observe.

Meanwhile, here's the Eset log.txt file:

Re: IE will not start reliably.

Ok, what Eset found is not terribly unusual, an item in Java's cache, which was deleted.

I'd still like to see results from a scan with Malwarebytes' Antimalware, when you get to it.

That does bring me to one other thing I noticed from your logs..

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) - JRE 6 Update 14 -"
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: " I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u14 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name.

    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
