Grabbed my internet connection

Hello,

I'm a new member. I got sypware on my machine two days ago and I haven't had any luck getting it off. The first sympton was getting warnings from Norton that trojans 28[1].bin and shopinst.exe were blocked. I unplugged from the net. I've run Ad-Aware, Spybot and MS Beta/Giant along with Norton to no avail. I booted into safe mode and cleaned up everything yesterday. I was clean but as soon as I plugged into the net I started started getting the warnings again. I also installed zone alarm after the attack and it has told me that winupdt.exe, prutpct.exe and cfd.exe were trying to access the net when I plugged in to post this message.

I've run HijackThis and processed it. Here is my log. I really appreciate all the help. I work in support and moderate on another board so I know the work and your help is mightly appreciated.

Thanks - Marta

PS: The system is Windows XP Pro sp 2. I've turned off System Restore and I've already made certain hidden files are shown.

Welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdt.exe
C:\windows\system32\msnavc32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\crefos.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\prutpct.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\clsodctr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\prutpct.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

E2G

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.begin2search.com/sidesearch.html

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdt.exe
C:\windows\system32\msnavc32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\crefos.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\prutpct.exe

c:\windows\system32\icgxpb.exe
C:\Program Files\E2G\
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ic2_win.dll

Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

It is looking better. I did get an alert from the Giant Anti-spy after cleaning up in safe mode and rebooting that "My Search Bar Browser Plug-in" was trying to install. It blocked it. But otherwise it seems better. I have run a scan by Norton and I'll try the Trend Micro. I couldn't do it at first because I didn't have the right version of Java. I also plan to do a couple of spyware scans again.

Here's the results:

I also have a couple of questions:

- This PC has two accounts. Should I do anything special on the second account?

- I have an external hard drive. Should I scan it also?

Thanks a bunch!

Marta

Edited and added the following note:

I couldn't find c:\windows\system32\icgxpb.exe. I searched including hidden and couldn't find it.

I would run Ad-aware and Spybot again since nothing should be trying to install anymore. Then do the following:

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

If something is bad on the other account, HijackThis should be able to pick that up also. Not sure how it would work on a external hard drive since it's not the drive with the Operating System. Copy a version of HijackThis in there and try running it.

Your log is clean. If you disabled System Restore, make sure to enable it now.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial (http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent) and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Yep, I think I'm good. Thank you again.

I have the MS/Giant anti-spyware running. It has caught the "My Search Bar Browser Plug in" a couple of times. But scans don't show it. So I'm going to keep a watch on it a bit.

I did go out an run the Trend Micro Virus and it found Troj_aee.a which Norton didn't. But the HijackThis log still looks clean and I can't find any of its files (ntlanman.exe, etc). So, I'll try another virus scan tomorrow just to be certain.

Meanwhile, I'm going to be running a real firewall and using Firefox for a while. If anything else crops up, I'll post a new thread.

Thanks again for the quick help.
