I was really trying to avoid a restore to factory setting at all costs, but if that's the cure

If you are prepared to restore to factory settings and you have saved all your important data, for example, pics, music and video files, then there would be no harm in trying the other options first.

Since the problem occures during the bootup it maybe wise to try option 1 first:

1. Recover Boot files only

And if that does not correct the problem option 2:

2. Recover System- and Driver files.

If that does not correct the problem then you can use the restore to factory settings.

If you know someone who has a windows xp cd you can try the repair windows option, which repairs(restores)the windows files to original setting as set by the CD. It does however sometimes overwrite all your windows updates, but all you have to do is visit windows update page and install all the missing patches, nothing else is removed.

Make sure you disconnect from the internet when doing any of the above, only reconnect when you have installed your antivirus/firewall.

I leave this open for a few days, should you need to ask any more questions.
