Virus help - having major issues

My friend's computer is basically knacked, he phoned me yesterday and told me something kept popping up on his computer - i've forgotten the exact name of it but its something like windows anti virus, and its tellign him of all these viruses he's got and even though he's never seen it before he clicked on it for help and it then said you had to pay to use it. I went round and ran his anti virus for him - ClamWin, on Windows XP - and it set away and kept finding trojons and worms here and there, but then when it stopped scanning it just went off. Other stuff, to do with this windows anti virus kept popping up and he couldn't get rid of it, even though I'd already deleted it from the computer or so I'd thought.

We're completly lost now. He's just put i off for now, and would appriciate some advice. We've got a few different options:

1. Delete ClamWin and download the software I use - AVG - so that I know my way around it and can be of more help.

2. Take it into a computer shop and see if its worth seeing if they can fix it or if he should just get a new one.

Anyone got any suggestions?
