Windows shutsdown at startup

Spotbot recently caught some suspicious files trying to access the internet on my computer, which I said no to. On the next startup Windows immediately shut down, and has done so on every boot since. It gives a blue screen with information, some of which is:
Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
Technical information: ***STOP: 0x0000000A (0x000000B0,0x00000002,0x00000000,0x8050601F)
Physical memory dump complete.
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I’ve been able to startup in Safe Mode, and attempted some spyware removal as follows:
AVG – C:\WINDOWS\System32\net.net removed to Virus Vault, identified as Trojan horse Clicker.ZWK
Spybot – MicrosoftWindowsSecurityCenter_disabled
settings HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WSCSVC\Start
BraveSentry data C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kr_done1
settings HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\kr_done1
Adaware – will not run, although it did prior to this problem
Malwarebyte – no problems found

I’m now having to use a different computer to access the internet for this posting. I couldn’t tell if GMER ran correctly in Safe Mode, but attached results anyway. My system is Windows XP Professional Edition, SP1.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Is there any particular reason you're still at SP1?

------------------------------------------------------

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration:
  • Restart your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, start pressing the F8 key.
  • In some systems, this may be the F5 key.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
  • Use the up arrow key to highlight Last Known Good Configuration and press Enter.
  • Login on your usual account.

Re: Windows shutsdown at startup

No good reason for still being on SP1, other than initial concern about SP2 effects and then procrastination followed. This problem will be the obvious push to get me to update to SP3. I’ve been thinking about a reinstall just to clear out clutter and possibly improve speed, but have a little anxiety about that.

Will try the Last Known Good Configuration to see if that gets the machine running in regular mode. I hope that doesn’t mean losing some more recent data/files. I’ll check back then. Should I rerun and post DDS and GMER reports if successful?

Re: Windows shutsdown at startup

Was able to get back on computer in normal mode using the Last Known Good Configuration. Thanks. Ran DDS and have included reports. While running GMER, I again had Windows shutdown and got the blue screen. The program was scanning the C:\WINDOWS folder at the time. So I don't have a report for GMER. Hope that's still ok.

Re: Windows shutsdown at startup

Hello, bugisda. Can you access the internet from your machine now?

I need to see a rootkit scan before I can help you.

Download RootRepeal.zip to your Desktop and click 'Extract all files' to extract the compressed file to it's own folder.
  • Double-click on RootRepeal.exe to run it.
  • Click on the 'Report' tab, and then click on 'Scan'.
  • A window opens asking what to include in the scan.
  • Check the following boxes then click 'OK':
Drivers
Files
Processes
SSDT
Stealth Objects
Hidden Services
  • You will then be asked which drive to scan.
  • Check C: (or the drive your operating system is installed on, if not C:)
  • Click 'OK' once again.
  • The tool will begin scanning and may take a while to complete, so please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes, click on 'Save Report'.
  • Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt.
  • Post the log in your next reply.

Re: Windows shutsdown at startup

Thanks chemist. Yes, I can access internet on the computer now.
I attempted to run RootRepeal twice without success. Both times it never got past the initializing stage of execution; never got to the "Report" tab and "Scan" part. The first time, after waiting a long time, I got a "low on virtual memory" warning, and it shut the program down. Second attempt, I let it go for about 20 minutes and it never got past "initializing". In both cases, the computer was frozen, as I couldn't do anything else (even open the Start menu), so had to shut down manually.
I did notice that while RootReal was trying to open, when I ran the cursor over the internet connection icon in taskbar, there were Asian symbols there...that's not normal. Also, these symbols changed periodically.
When shutting down the first time, several programs which I don't recognize had to be closed; one was called "Busy"; didn't record the rest...sorry.
Any ideas on next step?

Re: Windows shutsdown at startup

Hello again, bugisda.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

------------------------------------------------------

While Spybot's TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent tools from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your logs are clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click Advanced mode if not already selected.
  • Choose Yes at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the Tools menu.
  • Click Resident.
  • Uncheck the Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active. box.
  • If TeaTimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the Allow Change box when prompted.
  • In the File menu click Exit to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
------------------------------------------------------

Download ResetTeaTimer
  • and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ResetTeaTimer.zip
  • Double-click ResetTeaTimer.bat and click Run to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.
  • A DOS window will open and close again, this is normal.
------------------------------------------------------

If for some reason during these fixes you receive prompts from Spybot about whether to Allow or Deny any changes, please Allow them all.

------------------------------------------------------

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Get help here

Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Re: Windows shutsdown at startup

Hello again, bugisda. Please tell us how your system is behaving.

No need to attach logs going forward. Just copy/paste them directly into the Reply to Thread window. Thanks.

Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at any Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected.
  • It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

Re: Windows shutsdown at startup

Hello chemist,
I ran ATF-Cleaner and have made repeated attempts to run the online Kaspersky scanner. Had to stop scan in process a few times because of daily thunderstorms; but when allowed to run the scanner always seems to get hung up after about 14,000 files scanned (indicates 2% complete). The number of files scanned is not always the same. The "duration of scan" meter appears to freeze at this point also. Hours of waiting does not change it. Also, after stopping the stuck scanning and closing the IE window, the computer freezes (but mouse only slows down) and I have to shut down manually.

The computer is also generally running slower. What to do?

Re: Windows shutsdown at startup

Hello again, bugisda. Try one of these:

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET and Save the file to your Desktop.
  • If you are not using Internet Explorer, double-click esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to install it.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings and ensure these options are ticked:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Copy/paste that log as a reply to this topic and also let me know how things are now.
------------------------------------------------------

Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Perform an online scan with Panda ActiveScan
  • Click on Scan Your PC Now
  • A "pop up" window will appear, or a new tab will open.
  • Click on Register
  • Choose the option you like most, but we recommend the Free Registration.
  • Click on Register
  • Enter your e-mail address, and create a password.
  • Select "I do not want to receive any type of information" (unless you want to receive such information)
  • Click on Send
  • Confirm registration, and continue by entering your user name and password, then click on Enter
  • Select Full Scan, then Click on Scan Now
  • Wait for the components to be loaded and installed. Don't close this window or go to another page while it is downloading. You can continue using the Internet by opening another window in your browser.
  • If it finds any malware it can disinfect, the Disinfect button will be enabled. Click on Disinfect
  • Please ignore the offer to buy the program. Click on Export to
  • Export the log and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.
**Note**
To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.

Re: Windows shutsdown at startup

Hello again, bugisda. Kaspersky has detected infected emails in the following Folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\All\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{3203D4E4-3933-4654-8ACC-63655A457D5D}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx
C:\Documents and Settings\Carmel\Desktop\Carmel's stuff from VCLF\personal\backup9-26\Identities\{1ADC0080-FF18-11D3-87B3-C18025741135}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\wcs.dbx
F:\Carmel\Desktop\Carmel's stuff from VCLF\personal\backup9-26\Identities\{1ADC0080-FF18-11D3-87B3-C18025741135}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\wcs.dbx
F:\SelectedBackup 040709\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx

Unfortunately, it only tells us where the emails are, and not their names. You will have to find the emails and delete them. They are likely emails with an attachment. If you are not sure what they are, you will have to delete emails until a scan of those folders comes up clean. You can configure Kaspersky to scan only those folders. Let me know when you find and delete them.

------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below into Notepad:

Code:
@echo off
if exist "%temp%\log.txt" del "%temp%\log.txt"

for %%g in (

"C:\win32delfkil.exe"
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg7\QUEUE\TEMP\2843DC2995.emc"
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg7\QUEUE\TEMP\28D57D508F.in"
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\reboot.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\restart.exe"

) do (
del /a/f/q %%g >nul 2>&1
if exist %%g echo.%%~g>>"%temp%\log.txt"
)

for %%g in (

"F:\All\Desktop\June Fix Its"

) do (
rd /s/q %%g >nul 2>&1
if exist %%g echo.%%~g>>"%temp%\log.txt"
)

if exist "%temp%\log.txt" ( start notepad "%temp%\log.txt"
) else echo.Deleted Successfully !!

pause
del %0
Save this Notepad file as fix.bat and choose to Save as type: - All Files then close the Notepad file.
It should look like this:

Double-click on fix.bat to run it.

Tell me what it says in your next reply. Press any key to continue.

Re: Windows shutsdown at startup

I configured Kaspersky to scan my email files and it did not identify any infections. So I then did same with ESET; it found two of the infections again, which have now been eliminated. ESET did NOT find the other two (inbox files) again, so I have to assume they are now ok.

The fix.bat has been run, with the following message resulting:
Deleted Successfully !!
Press any key to continue . . .

AVG ran an automatic scan while I wasn't aware and put the following in the virus vault:
Trojan horse Generic13.BQOF C:\Program Files\ww\wwsetup1.exe
Trojan horse BackDoor.Generic11.ZNE C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\SYSTEMS32\hjgruihqokwbav.dll.vir

Re: Windows shutsdown at startup

Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.

Please disable AVG before uninstalling ComboFix and then re-enable it after doing so.

Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore Points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore Point.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

Please re-enable TeaTimer:
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Check the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
------------------------------------------------------

You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix.

------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware, or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
    • Green to go
    • Yellow for caution
    • Red to stop
WOT has an add-on available for both Firefox and IE.
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting the attempted connections to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
    • Download Host.zip and Save it to your Desktop.
    • Right-click hosts.zip and select 'Extract all files' or 'Extract files...'.
    • Follow the prompts and click 'Finish'.
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
  • IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
