Re: Suspected Malware

Hi,

I have to head out for the day and so I'll work on the above when I get back, but something I saw that I should mention: when I went into my Add/Remove programs control panel, there's still a listing for Symantec AntiVirus Client, 14.25 MB in size. When I hit the remove button, it asks for confirmation, then nothing happens. I see the 'Please wait while Windows configures...' message for a few seconds then it stops, and the Symantec is still on the list.

Also, Ad-Aware, Spybot, and ZA have all (supposedly) been removed from my system, and that was the case on Sunday when I posted the last DDS log.

Re: Suspected Malware

Hi,

I edited my previous post to include a few more things. Since you're at work now, it's likely that you didn't perform them yet. Please check them again.

Quote:

Try uninstalling it in Safe Mode. Is/was this a company computer? Consult your IT department if that's the case.

Quote:
Norton AntiVirus Clients or Symantec AntiVirus Clients especially Corporate Edition Clients can be installed as managed network setup type by a Symantec AntiVirus Server. When a Symantec AntiVirus Client is managed, it will prompt for password when uninstalling client via local computer Control Panel Add or Remove Program applet. If you don’t know or forget the password, then the client is not able to uninstall or remove. And the SAV client uninstall password won’t work with server group password too, as if you enter that password, you will receive an invalid password message.

The client uninstallation password is different from the server group password, and it can be set by the administrator through the Symantec System Center for the client that is managed.

Re: Suspected Malware

Hi,

I tried uninstalling Norton in Safe Mode, and it said the Installer wasn't accessible, possibly because I was in Safe Mode. I also re-tried using the Symantec Removal Tool, but that didn't work. I did have the Corporate Edition of NAV on my computer for a while (I teach at a private school, and our IT tech gave me NAV to install at home; I'll try to get in touch with her and see if she can help with getting rid of it.)

I ran ComboFix with the script but didn't reset my router. The other computer in my house is my wife's laptop. Should I do the initial scans as outlined in the sticky for this forum and post those so we can see if that machine is infected?

I'll make the changes to the Internet Connection you posted and do a DDS scan, then post the ComboFix and DDs scan logs.

Re: Suspected Malware

Hi,

So after I made the changes to the Internet Connection, I was able to connect to MS Update and I installed a couple of updates with no problem. Hopefully that will continues.

Here's the logs you requested...one thing, though: when I ran ComboFix I forgot I have Spyware Blaster running...let me know if I should re-run ComboFix, and if I should use the same script.

Re: Suspected Malware

Yes, it looks good now. Let's keep it that way. You didn't reset the router yet, I suppose. If so, flushing the DNS was enough.

Please go ahead and post the logs from your wife's computer, and let's make sure that it's not infected.

Re: Suspected Malware

Hi,

Her DNS settings are fine.
Quote:
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6
Her version of java seems to be outdated though. She might like to delete the old java and download the latest one as described in post #7.

How is your computer doing? If all is still well, we can proceed with the final steps.

Re: Suspected Malware

Hi,

I'll update her Java later today, thanks for letting me know.

The desktop is fine: I can access MS Update, the Spyware S&D site, and the Malwarebytes site with no problems, so I think we're all set.

You're welcome.

Very happy to hear that. We can now proceed with the final steps. Go ahead and delete these from your desktop, if you haven't already:

ResetTeaTimer.bat
DDS
GMER
GooredFix

  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

It’s vital that you keep all your software up-to-date as older versions may have some security vulnerabilities. Secunia Software Inspector Scan can help you find out which programs need to be updated.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Happy Surfing and Think Prevention!

Re: Suspected Malware

Okay, I uninstalled the programs and used the online scanner...that's a nice resource, I had some stuff that was out of date and I had no idea.

Many thanks for your help...this is the second time I've used this forum to resolve a computer issue, and you guys are awesome!
