Virus infecting html files

I have McAffee Anti-Virus installed on my desktop running XP. A few days ago after installing a new program i started getting "FIle Repaired" notificaitons mostly on .html files in the new programs folders. It said they were W32/Virut!htm Trojans.

I figured it was harmless and something that my antivirus could handle, until i noticed that i couldn't access the McAffee, Symantec, TrendMicro, or any other anti-virus software websites.

I also tried to update Ad-Aware, bhat was also unsuccessful.

This has led me to believe that this may not be harmless. If you have any information that may help please let me know.

I will follow with HijackThis and Malwarebytes log files.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to TSF.

If McAfee is reporting that the sytem is infected with Win32/Virut, unfortunately it's time to reformat and reinstall

Virut is a polymorphic file infector, infecting all the executable files(.exe) and screen saver files(.scr) by way of corrupting them beyond repair. As of now, security experts suggest that a format and clean install, or destructive recovery if you have an OEM recovery partition, is the best way to clean the infection and it is the best and safest way to return the machine to its normal working state. Not a repair install.

It's a buggy virus and the files cannot be properly disinfected. Even if we attempt to clean it, our efforts will be futile. There's no tool that can fix this infection at the moment. Some tools claim to disinfect it but they also end up corrupting the system files in the end just like the virut itself. So, I am afraid there's no other option but a reformat and reinstall.

Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, etc) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (softwares) and screensavers (*.scr). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr files by appending itself to the executable.

Also, avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too.

Recent variants also modify htm, html, asp and php files.

Do not back up to another machine, as it may become compromised. Burn to DVD/CD, or to an external drive which has nothing else on it, and which you can format should it happen to become infected from the backups.

Here's some information on this infection:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/en...=Win32%2fVirut
http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_143034.htm
http://www.avast.com/eng/win32-virut.html
http://www.symantec.com/security_res...558-99&tabid=1

If you need assistance in performing a clean install, here is a couple of good guides to walk you through the process:

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winx...tallguides.htm
http://helpdesk.its.uiowa.edu/window...s/reformat.htm

You might also like to have a look at this blog by our colleague, miekiemoes:

http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2009/...-throwing.html

Virut is also a backdoor trojan which allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.

It would be prudent to get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact your financial institutions to apprise them of your situation, if this PC was used for any online banking, shopping, or any other sensitive transactions.

Good luck. Surf Safely and Think Prevention!

Re: Virus infecting html files

Thank you Amateur, your honestly and consideration are appreciated.

I had feared that reformatting would be the solution, however I keep all documents safe on my external hard drive that has been scanned by another computer and found to be unharmed. So luckily I won't be losing much, except some time re-installing programs. But, when compared to the trouble of losing banking information, is no trouble at all.

I am sorry that i didn't provide the DDS, Attach, or ARK files before, but i had not yet run them, and wanted to post asap. It might not matter now, but i am including them anyway.

TSF has proved to be a very usefull resource and I will use it in the future, should it become necessary.

Thank You
Steph

Re: Virus infecting html files

Hello again,

Quote:
I am sorry that i didn't provide the DDS, Attach, or ARK files before, but i had not yet run them, and wanted to post asap. It might not matter now, but i am including them anyway.
Yes, it may not matter. Let's have an online scan to confirm Virut.

Perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.
Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.
