Re: Firefox browser hijack and flash drive folders becoming .exe

File received, thank you. The rest of those are indeed Folders, not files.

Ensure your G: drive is connected.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

Quote:

File::
G:\.Trashes.exe

Folder::
G:\bck-up.exe
G:\RECYCLER.exe
G:\System Volume Information.exe
G:\wmv.exe
Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*)
in the same location as ComboFix.exe

***************************************************

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

***************************************************

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with an update on system behavior.

Re: Firefox browser hijack and flash drive folders becoming .exe

Open Notepad and copy/paste the contents in the code box below, into Notepad.

Quote:
@ECHO OFF
FOR %%Z IN (
"G:\bck-up.exe"
"G:\RECYCLER.exe"
"G:\System Volume Information.exe"
"G:\wmv.exe"
) DO Zip -Sr UpLoadTheseFolders.zip %%Z
DEL %0
Save this as zip.bat to your desktop and Save type as - "All Files"

It should look like this:

Double click on zip.bat & allow it to run

A file, UpLoadTheseFolders.zip will be created on your desktop. Please upload that file here. Please let me know when you've uploaded the file.

Re: Firefox browser hijack and flash drive folders becoming .exe

I created zip.bat and it ran but did not create the file to upload.

Re: Firefox browser hijack and flash drive folders becoming .exe

Is your G: drive connected?
Are those folders still on that G: drive ?

Re: Firefox browser hijack and flash drive folders becoming .exe

Yes to both. The drive is a bit funny to access sometimes, it is connected by firewire and sometimes cuts out and for some reason cannot handle windows media player writing tags to mp3's. However, right now it seems to be working fine.

Re: Firefox browser hijack and flash drive folders becoming .exe

Okay, I'm going to have you do this manually. Right click each of those folders and select Send To>Compressed (zipped file). Go to this site and use the Browse to file button to browse to them, and upload them one at a time.

Re: Firefox browser hijack and flash drive folders becoming .exe

Great, they've been uploaded now. I hadn't actually noticed, but one of the folders has been changed - I assume by ComboFix - from Trashes.exe to an exe.vir file, I have uploaded this also as a zip.

thankyou

Re: Firefox browser hijack and flash drive folders becoming .exe

Files received, thank you for the extra effort to do that.

It will take me some time to inspect them and figure out why they won't delete, and how we can get rid of them. I'll get back to you, but it shall be a while.

Re: Firefox browser hijack and flash drive folders becoming .exe

Thanks for being so patient.

What happens when you right click the folder and select 'delete'?

Re: Firefox browser hijack and flash drive folders becoming .exe

Thanks Ried, that was easy! The files are deleted. I had previously not wanted to do this as they had contained my files, but that is no longer the case.

I have noticed something else on the drive also. At g:\bck-up\new folder\ there is A0068642.exe, A0068642.inf and change.log - files that I didn't put there. I looked inside the log file and it mentions udjudwq.exe which i think is a virus? Should i try deleting these also? Or are they related to combofix?

Thanks

Re: Firefox browser hijack and flash drive folders becoming .exe

You can delete those as well. After you've done that, we can tidy up.

Your logs are clean. If there aren't any more problems, please continue with these final instructions and helpful links:

The following procedure will implement some cleanup procedures. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point.

Click Start > Run and copy/paste, or type the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Should you wish to contribute to the ongoing development of ComboFix, donations are being accepted via PayPal.

To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

SpywareBlaster 4.0 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items.
  • It will block any bad ActiveX from running in Internet Explorer and Firefox if it's listed in their database (which you should update frequently). To view their database and list of restricted sites, launch the program and click on each of the tabs on the main display page.

Update, and scan with your onboard Anti Malware and Anti Virus programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?
Think Prevention

**Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

-----------------------------------------------------

Follow the list above and the potential for infection will reduce dramatically.

**Kindly respond one more time and let me know if we may consider this thread resolved.
