Looks like an RPC Problem

Hi all,
I started up my computer late last night to discover that avast!4 antivirus, my Apache HTTP server and other programs simply stopped working. Avast displays the classic blue ball with red slash through it - clicking on it results in an error message involving an RPC error. I hit the computer with a complete boot-time scan with Avast and found nothing. Because my computer is an HP, it didn't come with a Vista OS CD (meaning I can't just repair Windows and hope it works). Other efforts over the past...14 hours have been fruitless.
Furthermore, I can't get Avast to start up, nor can I get to a lot of my administrative stuff (I can't check on the RPC service because the Services program won't start). I'm sort of lost at the moment - like I said I've been running around the internet for a long time to no avail.
