Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox

Hello,

I sucessfully removed a nasty google/search engine hijack virus but now whenever I load IE or Firefox I get an error that says "The Application or DLL globalroot\sytemroot\system32\gxcxcirlfusovhnfxodedbshnawmnwuyvqmxm.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

This DLL is actually the file the virus and malware software identified and I suspect removed. How do I get rid of this warning. IE and Firefox open fine after I click OK on the warning.

Below and attached are the DDS/GMER files.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox

Hello and Welcome to TSF.

Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant notification by email, then click Add Subscription.

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.

------------------------------------------------------

One or more of the identified infections was a backdoor trojan.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read this: How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?

------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

------------------------------------------------------

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox

Hello rgcarterva. Please tell us how your system is behaving.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Are you aware of all those open ports on your computer?

------------------------------------------------------

Please uninstall the following via the Add or Remove Programs section of your Control Panel if they still exist:

LiveUpdate (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation)
Symantec Technical Support Web Controls

------------------------------------------------------

RegCure

We do not recommend the use of registry cleaners. Our colleague miekiemoes has an excellent writeup here

We suggest uninstalling them via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

------------------------------------------------------

Please uninstall the following via Start->(or My Computer)->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs if they still exist:

Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player
Viewpoint Toolbar

The above are considered foistware instead of malware since they are installed without users approval, but don't spy or do anything "bad". Please read here and here

------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

To open Notepad, go Start > Run and type Notepad then click 'OK'.

Open Notepad and copy/paste all the text in the quotebox below into Notepad:

Quote:
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring]
"DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=-

Driver::
sxjwddz
EraserUtilDrv10730
Save this Notepad file as CFScript.txt to your Desktop and then close the file.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript onto ComboFix

If you are prompted to update ComboFix, please choose Yes

Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post that log, ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs):

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still.

Leave this one as it has the latest definitions:

Java(TM) 6 Update 13

Going forward, Java will overwrite existing installs, so removing older versions should not be required after this.

When updating in the future, make sure you untick the box next to Yahoo Toolbar for Firefox/Mozilla or MSN Toolbar unless you want it.

------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at any Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected.
  • It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

ComboFix.txt
Kaspersky report
report on system behavior

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox

Hello,

System was performing very well for about 24-hours, but my Resident Shield for AVG just popped up with 3 alerts of a "Trojan horse rootkit-pakes.A" at c:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33_4BCA-9586_051D24DDBF8F}\RP588\A0192730.sys.

I clicked "remove all unhealed" one showed as moved to virus vault the other two notices remain infected but when I try to remove them it says File not Found.

I didn't do anything in your most recent post yet... was greeted to this Resident Shield alert when I was planning to do it.

Also, not sure what you mean by "Am I aware of all those open ports on my computer?" We do have a wireless network but I'm not really sure what if those ports are related.

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox

System Volume Information is where Windows keeps old system restore points. Some of yours are infected. They pose no harm unless you restore to one of those points. Can you just put them in the vault? Go ahead with the instructions.

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox

System seems to be working fairly well. Errors were gone as of first combo fix (except for System Restore virus error I posted earlier.) My weather.com local weather home page looks a bit scrambled (pictures don't show, text is out of alignment) on Firefox but looks fine on IE. This is a new issue, don't see this issue with any other sites. The other firefox issue I immediately notice is that I can't attach files in this post via Firefox... the button to do so is gone. I had to go into IE to see it.

Attached are the files.

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox

Hello again, rgcarterva. No malware is showing in your logs, and I don't see what's causing your FF issues.

Try uninstalling, and then re-installing Firefox:

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox

That didn't work, but I went to "Tools" "Options" "Network" "Offline Storage" "Clear Now" and cleared the cache and now the "attach" button is back and sites load normally. Maybe related to ATF-Cleaner's actions, but all is working now. Thanks!

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox

When you ran ATF-Cleaner, did you choose 'Select All'?

Yes, and then "No" when it asked about Saved Passwords.

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox

Hello again, rgcarterva. Looking at ATF-Cleaner, it seems it doesn't take care of that particular chore, though I'm not sure.

Glad you got it going though. Good job!

------------------------------------------------------

Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.

Please disable AVG before uninstalling ComboFix and then re-enable it after doing so.

Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore Points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore Point.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix.

------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting the attempted connections to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
    • Download Host.zip and Save it to your Desktop.
    • Right-click hosts.zip and select 'Extract all files' or 'Extract files...'.
    • Follow the prompts and click 'Finish'.
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
