Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox
Hello,
I sucessfully removed a nasty google/search engine hijack virus but now whenever I load IE or Firefox I get an error that says "The Application or DLL globalroot\sytemroot\system32\gxcxcirlfusovhnfxodedbshnawmnwuyvqmxm.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette. This DLL is actually the file the virus and malware software identified and I suspect removed. How do I get rid of this warning. IE and Firefox open fine after I click OK on the warning. Below and attached are the DDS/GMER files. Thanks for your help! ________ DDS (Ver_09-05-14.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Jessica Carter at 22:47:59.45 on Wed 06/03/2009 Internet Explorer: 7.0.5730.11 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_13 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2038.984 [GMT -4:00] AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF} ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exe svchost.exe svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\AluSchedulerSvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Creative Labs Shared\Service\CreativeLicensing.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTsvcCDA.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k HTTPFilter C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\PifSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE C:\Program Files\MozyHome\mozybackup.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\NICCONFIGSVC.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\RegSrvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\WLKeeper.exe C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe C:\WINDOWS\stsystra.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Rundll32.exe C:\DOCUME~1\JESSIC~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\clclean.0001 C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\DMXLauncher.exe C:\Program Files\Dell Photo AIO Printer 964\dlcjmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\DLA\DLACTRLW.EXE C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy\Surround Mixer\CTSysVol.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxsrvc.exe C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\OmniPageSE4.0\OpwareSE4.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\WrtMon.exe C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe C:\Program Files\Verizon\McciTrayApp.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\Quickset.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\bin\ZCfgSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\WrtProc.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ifrmewrk.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\PIF\{B8E1DD85-8582-4c61-B58F-2F227FCA9A08}\PifSvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Creative\MediaSource\Detector\CTDetect.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dlcjcoms.exe C:\Program Files\DellSupport\DSAgnt.exe C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe C:\Program Files\AIM6\aim6.exe C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware_named.exe C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\Dot1XCfg.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\agent.exe C:\Program Files\MozyHome\mozystat.exe C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\AIM6\aolsoftware.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaws.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater5\AdobeUpdater.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Jessica Carter\Desktop\dds.scr ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uStart Page = hxxp://www.weather.com/outlook/health/general/local/20001 uSearch Page = hxxp://www.google.com uSearch Bar = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uDefault_Page_URL = http://www.google.com/ig/dell?hl=en&...suk&channel=us uSearchMigratedDefaultURL = hxxp://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=utf8&oe=utf8 uInternet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = hxxp://www.google.com/ig/dell?hl=en&client=dell-usuk&channel=us uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local uSearchAssistant = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uSearchURL,(Default) = hxxp://www.google.com/search?q=%s mURLSearchHooks: AIM Toolbar Search Class: {03402f96-3dc7-4285-bc50-9e81fefafe43} - Hello and Welcome to TSF.

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed. ------------------------------------------------------ One or more of the identified infections was a backdoor trojan. This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation. Please read this: How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud? ------------------------------------------------------ Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate. Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper. ------------------------------------------------------ Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix * Ensure you have disabled all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Get help here Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review. ------------------------------------------------------ |

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox
Hello rgcarterva. Please tell us how your system is behaving.
Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. ------------------------------------------------------ Are you aware of all those open ports on your computer? ------------------------------------------------------ Please uninstall the following via the Add or Remove Programs section of your Control Panel if they still exist: LiveUpdate (Symantec Corporation) LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation) Symantec Technical Support Web Controls ------------------------------------------------------ RegCure We do not recommend the use of registry cleaners. Our colleague miekiemoes has an excellent writeup here We suggest uninstalling them via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel. ------------------------------------------------------ Please uninstall the following via Start->(or My Computer)->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs if they still exist: Viewpoint Manager Viewpoint Media Player Viewpoint Toolbar The above are considered foistware instead of malware since they are installed without users approval, but don't spy or do anything "bad". Please read here and here ------------------------------------------------------ Close any open browsers. Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix. To open Notepad, go Start > Run and type Notepad then click 'OK'. Open Notepad and copy/paste all the text in the quotebox below into Notepad: Quote:
![]() Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript onto ComboFix If you are prompted to update ComboFix, please choose Yes Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post that log, ComboFix.txt in your next reply. Note: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall. ------------------------------------------------------ Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs): J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9 Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 Java(TM) 6 Update 2 Java(TM) 6 Update 3 Java(TM) 6 Update 5 Java(TM) 6 Update 7 Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still. Leave this one as it has the latest definitions: Java(TM) 6 Update 13 Going forward, Java will overwrite existing installs, so removing older versions should not be required after this. When updating in the future, make sure you untick the box next to Yahoo Toolbar for Firefox/Mozilla or MSN Toolbar unless you want it. ------------------------------------------------------ Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. ------------------------------------------------------ Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan at Kaspersky Online Scanner Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
![]() **Note** To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
------------------------------------------------------ Please post the following in your next reply: ComboFix.txt Kaspersky report report on system behavior |

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox
Hello,
System was performing very well for about 24-hours, but my Resident Shield for AVG just popped up with 3 alerts of a "Trojan horse rootkit-pakes.A" at c:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33_4BCA-9586_051D24DDBF8F}\RP588\A0192730.sys. I clicked "remove all unhealed" one showed as moved to virus vault the other two notices remain infected but when I try to remove them it says File not Found. I didn't do anything in your most recent post yet... was greeted to this Resident Shield alert when I was planning to do it. Also, not sure what you mean by "Am I aware of all those open ports on my computer?" We do have a wireless network but I'm not really sure what if those ports are related. |

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox
System Volume Information is where Windows keeps old system restore points. Some of yours are infected. They pose no harm unless you restore to one of those points. Can you just put them in the vault? Go ahead with the instructions.

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox
System seems to be working fairly well. Errors were gone as of first combo fix (except for System Restore virus error I posted earlier.) My weather.com local weather home page looks a bit scrambled (pictures don't show, text is out of alignment) on Firefox but looks fine on IE. This is a new issue, don't see this issue with any other sites. The other firefox issue I immediately notice is that I can't attach files in this post via Firefox... the button to do so is gone. I had to go into IE to see it.
Attached are the files. |

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox
Hello again, rgcarterva. No malware is showing in your logs, and I don't see what's causing your FF issues.
Try uninstalling, and then re-installing Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/upgrade.html ------------------------------------------------------ |

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox
That didn't work, but I went to "Tools" "Options" "Network" "Offline Storage" "Clear Now" and cleared the cache and now the "attach" button is back and sites load normally. Maybe related to ATF-Cleaner's actions, but all is working now. Thanks!

Re: Removed Virus but now have trouble with IE and Firefox
Hello again, rgcarterva. Looking at ATF-Cleaner, it seems it doesn't take care of that particular chore, though I'm not sure.
Glad you got it going though. Good job! ------------------------------------------------------ Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. Please disable AVG before uninstalling ComboFix and then re-enable it after doing so. Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK: combofix /u This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore Points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore Point. Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already. You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix. ------------------------------------------------------ MICROSOFT UPDATES It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. SPYWARE PREVENTION This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles:
