Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Hello,

I hope you guys can help. This is driving me mad.

My Google search results are redirecting to all sorts of sites. If I click on the cached version of the result, then on the current page link at the top, I get through to the correct site.

Also, my AVG Free Anti-Virus and Malwarebytes programs will not update anymore.

I managed to update Malwarebytes manually (mbam-rules.exe) and then did Malwarebytes Scan. This revealed Trojan.daonol after about 18,240 files scanned. I then aborted scan (takes ages before it aborts) which showed this virus had affected c:\windows\fmn.yih. Malwarebytes then removed the nasty beast and I thought I was done but it just reappears straight away.

I have also turned off Windows Restore and then ran Ccleaner. Made no difference. Letting Malwarebytes scan to the end does not work, it stops responding soon after the trojan is detected.

I am running Windows XP with SP3. I have tried to uninstall AVG but this fails and I can't seem to end AVG either, even after removing it from startup.

I know only a little about PC's so please go easy on me ;-). I really hope you can help. Thank you in advance.

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Looks like you already ran Combofix.

As seen in Post #2 of our sticky topic 'NEW INSTRUCTIONS Read this Before Posting For Malware Removal Help'

Quote:
Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.
Since you already have, please post its log. It should be located at: C:\Combofix.txt

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Thank you for taking the trouble to try and help me.

Yes, I downloaded and ran Combofix before I read the help page telling me not to ... sorry. Combofix started scanning, I left it alone for 2 hours, but it was not doing anything (stalled I presume) so I terminated it. I then deleted it from the desktop after reading that I shouldn't have run it. I just had a look and the Combofix directory (C:) is still there. The combofix.txt file contains :

ComboFix 09-05-17.04 - Marc Tielemans 18/05/2009 11:27:09.1 - NTFSx86
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.1015.649 [GMT 1:00]
Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\Marc Tielemans\Desktop\ComboFix.exe
AV: AVG Anti-Virus Free *On-access scanning enabled* (Outdated) {17DDD097-36FF-435F-9E1B-52D74245D6BF}

Yesterday the PC allowed me to update Malwarebytes and AVG and I ran both scans. Nothing was found, so has the trojan gone? Or could it still be lurking in the background?

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Hi,

Combofix needs to be properly uninstalled. We need to re-download it for that anyway. We might as well try scanning with it one more time.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.

    To disable AVG8:

Please open the AVG 8 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG 8 icon on task bar.

    * Click on Tools.
    * Select Advanced Settings.
    * In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
    * In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
    * To re-enable AVG 8 when the Combofix is done, please select "Enable Resident Shield" again.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

# Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
-----------------------------------
Note: Please make sure that your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done this.

How to disable your security applications

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Thank you. I managed to disable to resident shield ok and closed down AVG. I then downloaded Combofix from your link and saved it to desktop. I then ran it but almost immediately it returned the following message :

-----------------------

ALERT : It is NOT SAFE to continue

The contents of the ComboFix package has been compromised. Please download a fresh copy from :

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/Comb...o-use-combofix

Note : You may be infected with a file patching virus (Virut)

-------------------------------

Oh dear ....

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Hi,

That doesn't sound good. Let's check it out further.

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • On the page you'll find a "Browse" button.
  • Next to the browse button you'll see a box to enter text.
  • Please copy/paste the following in BOLD:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe

  • Then click the "Send File " button just below.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • If the file is analyzed before click
    Reanalyse file now button.
  • Wait until the file is analyzed.
  • Once scanned, save (copy and paste) the results.
  • Please repeat the process for the following files:

    • C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lsass.exe
    • C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe

Post back the results please.

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Hi,

Please perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.
Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Thanks, I will set that to run and report later.

My other computer seems similarly affected, although both are no longer showing symptoms. I did the VirusTotal scan on the other affected PC on the 3 files you mentioned before and it brought up the same infection (Win32.Banker). I will run the Kaspersky scan on the other PC too.

Do you mind if we try to fix the other one too? Both simultaneously, or would you prefer one by one, or would you prefer that I open another thread for the other PC (would rather stick with you though, you seem to know what you're doin'

May I know your first name?

Thanks

Marc

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Hi,

I think it'll be best if we sort this one out first. I'll have a look at the other computer when we are done with this one. I'll be waiting for the Kaspersky report.

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Hi,

The infected item that Combofix reports is in your Outlook Express Sent Items folder. Unfortunately Kaspersky does not identify the individual mail. It can be a link in a message or an attachment. If your resident antivirus can scan your email, it may be able to identify it. Otherwise, try deleting suspicious mail from your Sent Items folder. Make sure that you do not click on any links or attachments while doing that.

I suspect that the eSafe results for those two files were false positives. If the system were viruted, the Kaspersky scan log should have shown many more infected system or application files.
  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

This will uninstall ComboFix properly.

You can go ahead and run DDS on your other computer now and I'll have a look at the logs it produces.

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Thanks. I have deleted ALL emails from the OE Sent Folder. Should have done this regularly anyway, they went back to 2005 and took quite a while to delete ...

I can't find ComboFix, it's not in C root and not in Program Files. Any idea how I can track it down quickly?

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

It should have been on your desktop. Wasn't it there?

If you've run the above uninstall command, you won't be able to find it any more. It's uninstalled.

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

I deleted the Combofix icon from the desktop before we started this thread but when you asked for the log file before, I found it in C:\ComboFix directory. This is no longer there so I guess it must be gone ...

Here is the DDS result and I have also attached the Attach.txt file (named Attach2.txt).

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Hi,

I then downloaded Combofix from your link and saved it to desktop. I then ran it but almost immediately it returned the following message :
So, it was on your desktop. It's uninstalled now.

On the second computer, uninstall these older versions of Java, but leave Java(TM) 6 Update 13 as it's the latest version

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_01
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

I cannot see any malware in the log. Any issues? Looks like you tried running Combofix there too. Do you still have it on the desktop?

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

Sorry, I thought we were still on the first computer. I misread your previous message and ran the DSS on the current computer so please ignore it. I'll go ahead and uninstall the two Java versions as requested on the first computer.

I'll post the correct DSS log for the second computer shortly. I have not downloaded or run Combofix on the second computer yet.

Re: Trojan.daonol (fmn.yih)

LOL, no wonder the log looked awfully familiar.
