Wierd One Here

I have a few symptoms... All because I downloaded a file expecting to be an add-in for a programming language...

Just for the Info:
I'm running Windows XP Home SP3,
I use Google Chrome For my browser (<3)
I have LogMeIn for my remote control software (In case that looks suspicious to anyone ;) )
My AntiVirus is AVG 8.5
I installed Ad-Aware to maybe check for anything
I also installed Zone Alarm to help stop some outgoing stuff

I also had a problem with some DLLs previously being some virus or whatever the proper term is, so I used a Live Linux CD to delete the files sine they were 'being used by windows'. So I think one of the logs still shows the dll file as there, even though it isn't... it might have been in a registry or something I Forget.

Firstly, when I go to My Computer->C:\ (like double clicking on the Presario C drive) I get a:

This is because I deleted the .com's that kept appearing in the RECYCLE folder since I had a feeling they weren't supposed to be there... My AntiVirus (AVG 8.5) agrees with me. Anyway, I ran Peer Guardian, knowing it helps block IPs, and it showed a few IPs from and to a few ranges of 85.255.112.* which I later investigated to be from a Ukranian ISP. Seeing this beech of firewall, I quickly installed Zone Alarm (I wasn't using a firewall previously due to Zone Alarm giving my Computer bsod's in it's previous form). I noticed, that nearly EVERY program using the Internet is being forwarded to an 85.255.112.* IP then to it's original path. Such as, I ran CMD, and did ping google.com and got a wierd request:

If I allow the request, it pings to the correct IP.

I already attempted to use some of the things described on:
http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-119159-Cannot-open-hard-drive.html

But I'm still getting the First Image's error box, so I donno .

Anyway, I'm still running the GMER test so I'll get that and the other log zipped and uploaded, but here is my DDS.txt log

Re: Wierd One Here

Well, I looked through the internet, found out I had a Trojan.Flush
I read through several other places and used ComboFix to remove it. It seems to have solved my DNS and my C:\ problems.

I would still post the gmer log, however it stopped, and gave no option for a log. I'll try running it again tonight and have it posted to see if there still is anything to be done. :)

Re: Wierd One Here

Hello dabberz. A reminder...

As you should have read here in Step 2 of our NEW INSTRUCTIONS thread:

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

------------------------------------------------------

If gmer still won't run, download RootRepeal.zip to your Desktop and click 'Extract all files' to extract the compressed file to it's own folder.
  • Double-click on RootRepeal.exe to run it.
  • Click on the 'Report' tab, and then click on 'Scan'.
  • A window opens asking what to include in the scan.
  • Check the following boxes then click 'OK':
Drivers
Files
Processes
SSDT
Stealth Objects
Hidden Services
  • You will then be asked which drive to scan.
  • Check C: (or the drive your operating system is installed on, if not C:)
  • Click 'OK' once again.
  • The tool will begin scanning and may take a while to complete, so please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes, click on 'Save Report'.
  • Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt.
  • Post the log in your next reply.
------------------------------------------------------

Go Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

C:\ComboFix.txt

Please post ComboFix.txt here for review.

------------------------------------------------------

Don't forget to attach the Attach.txt from dds in your next reply.

Re: Wierd One Here

Hello again, dabberz. Please tell us how your system is behaving.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

I see you have P2P software ( BitTorrent ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here, here, and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove this program, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
Save the file as fix.reg and choose to Save as type: - All Files then close the Notepad file.
It should look like this:

Double-click on fix.reg and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. Please delete the file afterwards.

------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs):

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0

These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still.

Leave this one as it has the latest definitions:

Java(TM) 6 Update 13

Going forward, Java will overwrite existing installs, so removing older versions should not be required after this.

When updating in the future, make sure you untick the box next to Yahoo Toolbar for Firefox/Mozilla or MSN Toolbar unless you want it.

------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at any Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected.
  • It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post the following in your next reply:

Re: Wierd One Here

My system seems to be running perfectly fine. If anything it might be running a tad slower, but that might be due to the added firewall. Would you still like me to run each requested step in your post above?

Re: Wierd One Here

I ran the scan, but the Save Log As button was grayed out. I'll try running it again. And post tomorrow (I saw 1 item there I think... but the results disappeared :S ).

Oh! It isn't done running! Ok. I'll re-edit/post when it is finished :P

Re: Wierd One Here

Hello again, dabberz. System Volume Information is where Windows keeps old system restore points. They will get deleted when we uninstall ComboFix.

HPSummer2005.exe came factory installed on your recovery partition. We will leave that one alone.

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following text into the Run box and click OK:

Code:
cmd /c del /a/f/q "C:\Documents and Settings\David\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache\f_001ac4"
A DOS window will open and close again, this is normal.

------------------------------------------------------

Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.

As far as those infected objects listed in the Kaspersky report, those are safely tucked away in ComboFix's quarantine folder or in old System Restore Points, which we will be taking care of now.

Please disable AVG before uninstalling ComboFix and then re-enable it after doing so.

Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore Points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore Point.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix.

------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting the attempted connections to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
    • Download Host.zip and Save it to your Desktop.
    • Right-click hosts.zip and select 'Extract all files' or 'Extract files...'.
    • Follow the prompts and click 'Finish'.
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
