scan problems, possible virus
I have a Dell laptop that I purchased last summer. I am running Windows Vista. I have been using McAfee to scan since that time. I didn't have problems until the last few months when I was trying to run a full scan. When doing this, McAfee will stop scan at:
c:\Windows\inf\mdmsier.PNF My computer will lock up and nothing else will open. It requires me to manually shut off in order to reboot. I have also tried running in safe mode and have the same problems. I removed McAfee using the McAfee removal program and installed AVG free. AVG was able to complete a full scan. Per advice on this forum (before being sent here), it was advised to run another scan for confirmation. I removed AVG and downloaded ESET. ESET also stopped running at the same point as McAfee. At that point, I was advised to come to this forum. I am currently running ESET on my computer. My computer still works but I am concerned about not being able to complete a full scan. Re: scan problems, possible virus
Hi -
I don't see anything to suggest there's a malware issue. We can scan that one file to see if somehow it's infected, but I think McAfee and Eset are simply having troulbe unpacking (viewing) that file, and therefore they hang. Once I see results of the scan, I'll have a better idea of how to advise. First, I see bits of AVG still present. Run the 32bit AVG Removal Tool from their page http://www.avg.com/download-tools Reboot as required. Please go to: VirusTotal

Re: scan problems, possible virus
I attempted to do this 5 times. Each time when I hit "Send File", it would say "not responding" and my computer would lock up forcing me to manually reboot. I let it sit at least an hour on 2 occassions and it did the same thing. Any other ideas?

Re: scan problems, possible virus
A 64kb file, if I understand your other thread correctly, should not be causing such problems. I have a few other ideas.
If it sits for more than a few minutes, 5 tops, close the window.

Re: scan problems, possible virus
We'll try this next
Please download the Suspicious File Packer http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip Unzip it to the desktop and run it. Paste the following list of files into the Suspicious File Packer window: c:\Windows\inf\mdmsier.PNFAllow SFP to pack the files by clicking Continue. This will generate a CAB archive on your desktop named requested-files[Date/Time].cab. Please submit it to this site http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/subm...php?channel=28 and include a link to this topic in the message. You can then delete the requested-files.cab file from your desktop, once you have uploaded it to the above recipient.

Re: scan problems, possible virus
Well, I've looked at my own and a colleague's. There's no reason to think this is a suspicious file. It seems to be a Windows Modem Setup File. Perhaps the permissions are locked on it, and therefore some scans hang on it. Seems they should bypass it rather than hang, but there you have it. I've been able to scan mine, as has my colleague.
Check the file properties, ensure it's a MS file. Either alter permissions, by taking full control of the file for your user account via the Properties tab, or have your scans ignore that file, place it in exceptions.

Re: scan problems, possible virus
Had another thought...before altering permissions, rename it to a .old extension, and then see if it can be scanned, packed or uploaded using one of the previous methods.

Re: scan problems, possible virus
To rename a file, you must navigate to it, right click on it, and select rename.
I don't use Vista regularly, just have a test machine set up with it, so I don't know what that file would be being called by if it's in use. You may be better off tracking down the issue with JC in the Vista forum. I see no reason to suspect malware at play here.

Re: scan problems, possible virus
Should be something like this, depending on what version of NOD32 you're using.
