[SOLVED] ODG Olmarik.HC

Dell 1.6Ghz dual core Inspiron laptop
1GB RAM
WinXP Media Cntr Edition SP3
100 GB HDD with 75GB free

lots of activity at load. I turned off some start-ups in MSconfig.
I installed ESET and it detects ODG trojan in memory -- 'unable to clean'.
ESET detects Olmarik.HC and says it deletes it from memory on each boot.
Windows installer runs on each boot -- dialog box does not say what it is installing. I used group policy edit to turn off windows installer -- to no effect as it continues to run on subsequent boots. IE does not startup. Firefox loads but will not connect. Google installer runs and a dialog pops up continually. An ATI Catalyst dialog indicates it cannot run due to some permission issue. Wireless is down. Wired lan okay but no browser. File transfers on local workgroup okay. Malwarebytes will not install. DDS.src will not run. gMer did complete scan and log file is attached. I have moved all important data off the machine but would like to troubleshoot and clean it without reinstall. Please advise.
Thank you for assisting.

Re: ODG Olmarik.HC

Hello and Welcome to TSF.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

------------------------------------------------------

Download ComboFix and the Microsoft file to a USB drive on another computer and transfer the files to your desktop.

------------------------------------------------------

Please download ComboFix and Save it to your Desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

First, we need to install the Windows Recovery Console.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery(repair) mode, if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Download the file from this Microsoft page:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Do not be concerned that this file is for SP2 and you have SP3. It will work just fine on your system.

Save it as it is originally named to your Desktop.

Now close all open windows and programs, including all antivirus and antispyware programs. Get help here

Then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Recovery Console.

As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return.

ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.

Once the Recovery Console is installed, this blue window will appear:

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all antivirus and antispyware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Get help here
  • Please click Yes to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a log for you.

Please post that log, ComboFix.txt, in your next reply.

Re: ODG Olmarik.HC

ComboFix will not run from the desktop either alone or after dropping Rec Console. Instructions were followed in order as directed in your detailed, well illustrated message. Thank you. Any other possible vectors of attack on this malware??

Re: ODG Olmarik.HC

Delete ComboFix.exe from your desktop.

Download ComboFix from any of the links below. You must rename it to Combo-Fix before saving it. Save it to your Desktop.

If you are using Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Main and select 'Always ask me where to save files' and click OK.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save Combo-Fix.exe to your Desktop

------------------------------------------------------

Now try dragging and dropping the MS file onto Combo-Fix.exe.

Let me know if you still have trouble.

Hello again, Ancient Wisdom. Is ESET still installed on your machine? It isn't showing in your Add or Remove Programs.

Re: ODG Olmarik.HC

Hello, AncientWisdom.

Do you see ESET listed in the Add or Remove Programs section of your Control Panel? Don't uninstall it, just let me know.

------------------------------------------------------

It appears that you have two antivirus programs installed and running, ESET and TrendMicro. While this may seem like better protection, they can actually conflict with one another and cause system instability or even system hangs. Please choose one to keep and uninstall the other via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel. I suggest uninstalling TrendMicro as it appears to be outdated.

Please uninstall the following via the Add or Remove Programs section of your Control Panel if they still exist:

Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 14

------------------------------------------------------

1. Click on the link below to download the Uninstall Tool and save it to your desktop.

ftp://conftpuser:consumer-trend@ftp-...nstallTool.exe

2. Double-click on the downloaded 'UninstallTool.exe' file.
3. Click on BROWSE, select the Desktop, and click on OK.
4. Click on UNZIP.
5. Wait for the extraction process to finish. Click on OK on the notification then click on CLOSE.
6. In your Desktop, double-click on the UninstallTool folder.
7. Double-click on PCCTool.exe.
8. Click on the UNINSTALL tab
9. Select the previously installed program from the pull-down menu at the bottom. If there is no pull-down menu present, skip this step.
10. Click on '4. Uninstall' to begin the uninstallation process.
11. Restart your computer then delete the Trend Micro folder.
Double Left Click on My Computer Icon.
Double Left Click on Local Disk C.
Double Left Click on Program Files.
Delete Trend Micro Folder.

------------------------------------------------------

Registry Mechanic
We do not recommend the use of registry cleaners. Our colleague miekiemoes has an excellent writeup here

We suggest uninstalling them via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

------------------------------------------------------

I noticed you have Ask Toolbar installed.

Please read this and decide if you want to keep it >> http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/ask-toolbars/

You can uninstall it via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

If you decide to uninstall it, please delete the following Folder if it still exists:

C:\Program Files\AskSBar

------------------------------------------------------

Please uninstall the following via Start->(or My Computer)->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs if it still exists:

Viewpoint Media Player<<This is considered foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval, but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Please read here and here

------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

Open Notepad and copy/paste all the text in the codebox below into Notepad:

Code:
File::
c:\documents and settings\Serena\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\LimeWire On Startup.lnk
c:\windows\pss\LimeWire On Startup.lnkStartup

Registry::
[-HKLM\~\startupfolder\C:^Documents and Settings^Serena^Start Menu^Programs^Startup^LimeWire On Startup.lnk]

FixCSet::
Save this Notepad file as CFScript.txt to your Desktop and then close the file.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript onto ComboFix

Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post that log, ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Chemist,
thank you for your continued attention and assistance.

TrendMicro
Registry Mechanic
AskBar
ViewPoint Media

have been removed. Windows Installer continues to run on boot. Eset is present in the AddRemove section of control panel, and it does run on startup. I disabled Eset for the comboFix run -- log file attached.

Re: ODG Olmarik.HC

Does the Windows Installer give any information about what application it is trying to install?

Do you remember having trouble installing any application about the time the problem started?

Re: ODG Olmarik.HC

Sorry, no such information. This is a friend's machine and I was not informed of any install problems. I have not been able to figure out how to determine what it is trying to install. There is no info on the dialog as to what it is attempting. I will let it run for a while to see where it goes. I have been shutting it down with task mgr. Perhaps it will go further now that some of the other issues are out of the way. ... >

Dell Network Assistant. Then it asks for the source CD which I do not have. I will try to get it and see if it resolves the wireless NIC card being down. thanks, things are getting better on this machine it would appear. Eset takes about two minutes on the initial startup scan which is longer than I have seen on other machines. I could be the cpu and memory specs I suppose.

How does the last scan look to you?

I was able to uninstall Dell network Assistant per Dell tech support advice that it is not an important application and it could be removed. The windows installer issue is resolved
thanks for your help on that part as well

Re: ODG Olmarik.HC

Dell also helped with the wireless adapter. It needed a newer driver. Perhaps it died when I upgraded the SP for XP. None of the updates and security patches were installed on this machine. the wireless must have died when I brought he patches up to date. that aspect is working fine now. The newer utility is great. I also found the memory specs while at dell so i can recommend a bump in memory as well.

Hello Georgian Chemist / Bug smasher, very impressive

this machine is beginning to look (and run) like a computer again. No obvious issues at present (finally). Scan logs attached.

I suppose I have a case to make about using 'free' game sites. If I were to present a bill for my time and yours, Chemist, 'free' games would not look like so much like free entertainment I am sure. Your help is greatly appreciated. I am recommending that the owner of this laptop use a game console even if the games have to be purchased on ebay or used at gamestop. I know I would prefer to see them on a big screen than on this laptop.

Re: ODG Olmarik.HC

Hello again, AncientWisdom. Much appreciated.

It appears PC-cillin Internet Security - Firewall is still registered with your WMI.

Quote:
AV: ESET Smart Security 4.0 *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {E5E70D32-0101-4F12-8FB0-D96ACA4F34C0}
FW: ESET Personal firewall *disabled* {E5E70D32-0101-4340-86A3-A7B0F1C8FFE0}
FW: PC-cillin Internet Security - Firewall *disabled* {3E790E9E-6A5D-4303-A7F9-185EC20F3EB6}
Please follow these instructions for de-registering PC-cillin Internet Security - Firewall:

**Note: Make sure you only delete PC-cillin products.
  • Go Start > Run and copy/paste wbemtest into the Run box and click 'OK'.
  • Click 'Connect'.
  • Copy/paste root/securitycenter into the box and click 'Connect'.
  • Click 'Query'.
  • Copy/paste SELECT * FROM FirewallProduct under 'Enter Query' and click 'Apply'.
  • If there is more than one result, it means there is more than one Firewall program registered.
  • Double-click on each result to view the properties for that Firewall product.
  • Identify the product(s) registered by scrolling down to 'companyName' then click 'Close'.
  • In the 'Query Result' window, click 'Delete' for any Firewall software that is no longer installed.
  • Click 'Close', then 'Exit' and let me know if it worked.
------------------------------------------------------

Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.

As far as those infected objects listed in the Kaspersky report, those are safely tucked away in ComboFix's quarantine folder or in old System Restore Points, which we will be taking care of now.

Please disable ESET before uninstalling ComboFix and then re-enable it after doing so.

Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore Points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore Point.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix.

------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting the attempted connections to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
    • Download Host.zip and Save it to your Desktop.
    • Right-click hosts.zip and select 'Extract all files' or 'Extract files...'.
    • Follow the prompts and click 'Finish'.
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Cool Re: ODG Olmarik.HC

A couple of points left to review

The cool WMI tool worked nicely to rid the extra firewall.
System is running like new!
I have disabled some startup dlls in msconfig. how do i get back to a clean boot without enabling the nasties that are unchecked there? It is using selective startup at present.

I will follow with IEspyad and the other recommendations. I love combofix. how is that the black hats have not accounted for it? How can I learn this art you so gracefully orchestrated?

What nasties are unchecked there? Re-enable everything in msconfig and reboot. Any error messages?

If ComboFix is still on the machine, post a fresh DDS.txt from dds in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------

If you have already uninstalled ComboFix...

Please download HijackThis and Save it to your Desktop.

Alternate link

Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click 'Run' or 'Install' and follow the prompts to install.

It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double-click on HijackThis.exe

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit 'Scan' and then click on 'Save log'.
3. Please post the HijackThis log in your next reply. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.
4. Close HijackThis now please.
