Computer very slows and cannot connect some devices to USB ports.

Hey there,

My computer has been very slow for the past month. Whenever I tried to open Firefox, it would take quite a few minutes to load. And the overall system is very sluggish and responding very slowly. I scanned my computer with AVG and it says that my computer is clean. I also have to boot twice when I want to switch on my computer. My computer hang at the Windows XP loading page and I need to reset it to make it succesfully go to Windows. Sometimes I have reset 3 times.

The other major thing that I'm worried about is that I cannot connect my iPhone to the computer. Whenever I tried to connect it, my computer would just hang there and nothing would respond. This is causing me real problems as I have not yet updated my iPhone to next firmware. Other devices that I connected to such as iPod, thumbdrive and printer would cause it to hang. But my USB mouse and USB wireless adapter is working perfectly without any problems. Here is the DDS test:

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

Your hard drive is almost full. Having too little free space on your hard drive can compromise system performance.

I suggest you move pictures, music, etc. to an external drive or USB stick if you have one and uninstall any programs that are never or hardly ever used.

Re: Computer very slows and cannot connect some devices to USB ports.

Hello xchocochips. Please tell us how your system is behaving.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Quote:
Registry Easy
We do not recommend the use of registry cleaners. Our colleague miekiemoes has an excellent writeup here

We suggest uninstalling them via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

------------------------------------------------------

I see you have P2P software ( uTorrent ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here, here, and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove this program, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

Open Notepad and copy/paste all the text in the quotebox below into Notepad:

Quote:
File::
c:\windows\Tasks\ErrorSmart Scheduled Scan.job
c:\windows\Tasks\MP Scheduled Quick Scan.job
c:\windows\Tasks\Schedule Task Weekly.job

RegLock::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CLSID\{19e185e0-8010-472e-86b7-45f2d78f75ef}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CLSID\{5ED60779-4DE2-4E07-B862-974CA4FF2E9C}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents]

SkipFix::
Save this Notepad file as CFScript.txt to your Desktop and then close the file.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript onto ComboFix

If you are prompted to update ComboFix, please choose Yes

Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post that log, ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date.

Java(TM) 6 Update 11 can be updated from the Java Control Panel. Go Start > Control Panel(Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts.

Make sure you don't install Yahoo Toolbar for Firefox/Mozilla or MSN Toolbar unless you want it.

------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at any Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected.
  • It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Re: Computer very slows and cannot connect some devices to USB ports.

Sorry for the late reply. I have been busy lately.

My system is a little bit better but it is still sluggish and not working efficiently as before. I still takes time to load a program and can be very lag at times. Do you mind if i post the combofix log first? The online scan is taking such a long time and when i scan it overnight, my computer suddenly rebooted itself. So I don't have the log. I'm now doing the second scan and it's oly 20%. So i'll post the combofix first. When the online scan is done, i'll post is A.S.A.P.

My internet also has been very slow and takes time to load a page. My wireless connection strength is always low. Is there any way to increase my internet speed and the signal strength?

Re: Computer very slows and cannot connect some devices to USB ports.

Nothing is showing that would be the cause of your issues. Unless something shows in your Kaspersky report, you might have to seek help in one of our other forums.

Do you still use Garena? Do web pages load slowly in both IE and Firefox?

Re: Computer very slows and cannot connect some devices to USB ports.

Disable the real-time protections of your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. Please re-enable them after the scan.
  • Download ToolBarSD and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ToolBarSD.exe to run it.
  • Type the letter of your chosen language and press Enter
  • Click OK to the prompt.
  • Type 1 and press Enter
  • Please post the log, TB.txt, which it creates at C:\TB.txt in your next reply.

Why is this on your D: drive?

You probably need to talk to your ISP about that. Nothing is showing in your logs.

Re: Computer very slows and cannot connect some devices to USB ports.

I think the file came together when my friend transfers some documents on his thumbdrive to my computer. I don't know what is that thing for.

When I use the internet on my father's laptop, it's way much faster than mine computer. So I don't think it is my ISP. I always have low signal strength and thus the speed drops.

My computer still hangs once in awhile and I can't move anything including the mouse and I had to resort to reset it. I think it is the USB port problems and I had to reset my computer several times before the device that i'm connecting to is working and my com won't hang.

Anyway, thank you very very much for your help. My computer seems to be a little bit faster excepts for the problems listed above and other than that, it is perfectly fine.

Re: Computer very slows and cannot connect some devices to USB ports.

Hello again, xchocochips. No malware is showing in your logs.

Your remaining problems don't seem to be malware related.

I suggest you seek expert advice with the folks in our Windows XP Support Forum or Networking Forum

Let them know you were here first and cleared of malware.

------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

cmd /c del /a/f/q "D:\wga hack.zip"

A DOS window will open and close again, this is normal.

------------------------------------------------------

When you say reset, do you mean system restore?

Re: Computer very slows and cannot connect some devices to USB ports.

Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.

Please disable AVG before uninstalling ComboFix and then re-enable it after doing so.

Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore Points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore Point.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix.

------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting the attempted connections to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Thanks a million for your help.

Do you know a way to clean up my program files for those uninstalled programs?

I'm not sure what you are referring to.

Anything related to ComboFix got uninstalled when you ran the uninstall command.

Re: Computer very slows and cannot connect some devices to USB ports.

Okay sorry, I might have phrase it wrongly. I meant like all the programs, games or software I installed over time and then I decided to uninstall it. The program files in my C drive would still be there even though I have finish uninstalling the program. So is there any way to clear up the folders?

For example, I still see the registry cleaner folder there at 100mb even though I have uninstall it.

Re: Computer very slows and cannot connect some devices to USB ports.

Just navigate to C:\Program Files, right-click the folder(s) you want to get rid of, and choose Delete. Let me know if you have trouble.
