Ntoskrnl-hook
I recently noticed my computer running much slower. I ran McAfee and found NTOSKRNL-HOOK trojan. McAfee says that the trojan is deleted every time I run it, but inevitably it shows up again the next time I scan.
Around the time i noticed the virus, I also found that everytime I booted up the windows firewall would be turned off and I would have to go manually turn it back on. I have read the instructions for help cleansing this virus and so the after this sentence ends you will find the results from the DDS.txt DDS (Ver_09-03-16.01) - NTFSx86 Run by The Dope Master at 20:19:52.53 on Mon 03/23/2009 Internet Explorer: 7.0.5730.13 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_12 Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2047.1309 [GMT -4:00] AV: McAfee VirusScan Enterprise *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs svchost.exe svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2ZS\Surround Mixer\CTSysVol.exe C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy2ZS\DVDAudio\CTDVDDet.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTHELPER.EXE C:\Program Files\McAfee\Common Framework\UdaterUI.exe C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\Common Framework\McTray.exe C:\PROGRA~1\CYBERL~1\INSTAN~1\Win2K\IBurn.exe C:\Program Files\lg_fwupdate\fwupdate.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Program Files\D-Tools\daemon.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe C:\Documents and Settings\The Dope Master\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe C:\Program Files\Logitech\SetPoint\KEM.exe C:\Program Files\Logitech\SetPoint\KHALMNPR.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTSvcCDA.EXE C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k hpdevmgmt C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LSSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\Common Framework\FrameworkService.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan Enterprise\Mcshield.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan Enterprise\VsTskMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nero\Nero BackItUp 4\NBService.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k HPZ12 C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k HPZ12 C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc C:\WINDOWS\system32\MsPMSPSv.exe C:\Program Files\Linksys Wireless-G PCI Network Adapter with SpeedBooster\WLService.exe C:\Program Files\Linksys Wireless-G PCI Network Adapter with SpeedBooster\WMP54GSv1_1.exe C:\Documents and Settings\The Dope Master\Desktop\dds.scr ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost;*.local BHO: HP Print Enhancer: {0347c33e-8762-4905-bf09-768834316c61} - This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation. Re: Ntoskrnl-hook
Hello jjonas. Please tell us how your system is behaving.
Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. ------------------------------------------------------ I see you have P2P software ( uTorrent, eMule, and Vuze ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information. Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares. References for the risk of these programs are here, here, and here. I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs. ------------------------------------------------------ Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. ------------------------------------------------------ Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan at Kaspersky Online Scanner Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
![]() **Note** To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
------------------------------------------------------ Please post the following in your next reply: Kaspersky report report on system behavior |

After I ran combofix, my computer seemed to be behaving more normal. The firewall is no longer being turned off after I boot my computer. I havn't been rerouted to any other sites when clicking on links as before. Is this information sufficient? Below you shall find the results of the Kaspersky report....

Re: Ntoskrnl-hook
Hello again, jjonas.
You have one infected mp3 file. The other finds have been quarantined by ComboFix. Ensure your F: drive is inserted/connected. Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK: cmd /c del /a/f/q "F:\Music\Artists\Beck\(2008) - Modern Guilt\06 - Walls.mp3" A DOS window will open and close again, this is normal. ------------------------------------------------------ Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. As far as those infected objects listed in the Kaspersky report, those are safely tucked away in ComboFix's quarantine folder or in old System Restore Points, which we will be taking care of now. Please disable McAfee before uninstalling ComboFix and then re-enable it after doing so. Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK: combofix /u This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore Points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore Point. Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already. You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix. ------------------------------------------------------ MICROSOFT UPDATES It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. SPYWARE PREVENTION This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
