Popup browser with ads

Hello,
I am trying to clean up my sister in law's computer. Her browser was hijacked and she was getting alot of false malware messages. I removed most of them with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which helped alot but I am still getting some browser pop ups. I am not aware of all that she has downloaded onto this computer but I know she was using some gaming sites such as Pogo Games and Zodiac Bingo.

Thank you for any help that you can give me.

Re: Popup browser with ads

Hello, thank you for helping me. I am trying to use CombiFix. I downloaded it to my desktop and started to run it. The blue box opened but I didn't get the message - "Combifix is preparing to run" as it says on it's website would happen. I waited 2 hours anyways and nothing seems to be happening. How long does the scan take? I did stop all my malware and antivirus ware from running I think.

Re: Popup browser with ads

The scan will take 20 minutes maximum. Try this:

Make sure you have disabled your antivirus program and closed all applications and browsers.

Go Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

"C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\ComboFix.exe" /killall

Follow the prompts and post the log in your next reply. Let me know if you still have trouble.

Re: Popup browser with ads

Hello

Thanks again but I am getting abit annoyed with Combofix. I ran it the first time for 2 hours and then the second time for 4 hours with no results. Each time I want to get out of it I have to unplug the computer and I am afraid that this computer now has more problems then when I started all of this. This last time I just waited for 30 minutes and still nothing happened. I have disabled all the malware, and antivirus systems. And I used your last command in the Run box. Still all I get is a blue box and a blinking yellow cursor. Combofix has left a Combofix file in my computer and also a Qoobox file but i don't see happening in the blue box and I don't get any log to post to you. I also don't get the desktop disappearing for awhile or the time changing like they said it would in the Combofix information. I just would like to know if I am going to have any residual problems after using Combofix and discontinuing it after it started.

Re: Popup browser with ads

Sorry to bother you again but I also deleted Combofix after my first try with it - I also deleted Qoobox and then reinstalled them just in case something was wrong with the programmed the first time I installed it. I downloaded it from another site the second time.

Re: Popup browser with ads

Hello altomare. No worries about your computer.

Delete ComboFix.exe from your desktop.

Download ComboFix from any of the links below. You must rename it to Combo-Fix before saving it. Save it to your Desktop.

If you are using Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Main and select 'Always ask me where to save files' and click OK.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save Combo-Fix.exe to your Desktop

------------------------------------------------------

Go Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

"C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\Combo-Fix.exe" /killall

Follow the prompts and post the log in your next reply. Let me know if you still have trouble.

Re: Popup browser with ads

Hello again
That didn't help either. I left the blue box for 20 minutes but no luck. I am using IE not Firefox. This computer has CCleaner and MalwareBytes Antimalware on it. Should I delete them first? I don't know why else Combi-Fix isn't working.

Re: Popup browser with ads

When I right click on Combi-Fix on the desktop and go into Properties it says that this program may be blocked because it came from another computer. So I clicked on "Unblock" and "Apply" and then OK but when I open Properties again it still says the program may be blocked. I did this with Shaw Secure - my anti virus program off.

Re: Popup browser with ads

You keep referring to Combi-Fix. I gave an instruction for Combo-Fix. Did you rename it Combi-Fix?

Re: Popup browser with ads

Hello again, altomare52. It appears the problem is Shaw Secure. It is a HIPS based product, and even when disabled, parts of it remain running. After disabling Shaw Secure, look up the running processes using Task Manager and 'End Process' on any of the following that are shown as still running:

fsgk32st.exe
FSMA32.EXE
FSGK32.EXE
FSMB32.EXE
FSM32.EXE
FCH32.EXE
FAMEH32.EXE
fsqh.exe
fspc.exe
fsguidll.exe
fssm32.exe
fsaua.exe
fsdfwd.exe
fsus.exe
fsav32.exe
scanwizard.exe

Combo-Fix.exe should now run. Let me know if you have trouble.

Hello
I am not sure how to open Task Manager. When I open it do I just right click the above list to disable them? Thanks.

Re: Popup browser with ads

Simultaneously press Ctrl Alt Del and Task Manager will open up. Click the 'Processes' tab and kill any of those listed above by selecting the process then clicking 'End Process' and click 'Yes' to the warning message.

Re: Popup browser with ads

Hello again, Wendy. Good job! Please tell us how your system is behaving.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
Save the file as fix.reg and choose to Save as type: - All Files then close the Notepad file.
It should look like this:

Double-click on fix.reg and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. Please delete the file afterwards.

------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

cmd /c del /a/f/q "c:\windows\Tasks\Ad-Aware Update (Weekly).job"

A DOS window will open and close again, this is normal.

------------------------------------------------------

Go Start > Run and copy/paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

cmd /c Vfind -ltf "%systemdrive%\msa.exe" >log.txt&log.txt&del log.txt

A Notepad file will open. Post the contents of log.txt in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12 The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement
  • Click Continue The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start(or My Computer) > Control Panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Click (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE, J2SE, Java(TM) SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go back to your Control Panel(using Classic View) and click the Java icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button.
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
      • Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window.
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE

------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at any Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected.
  • It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post the following in your next reply:

Re: Popup browser with ads

Hello
I have finished all of your instructions now. The computer is running now with no problems that I can tell. Actually the Kaspersky scan showed no malware at all. Here is a copy of the log.txt.
Entries: 0 (0)
Directories: 0 Files: 0
Bytes: 0 Blocks: 0
Thank you very much for all of your help. I just have a few questions about what I have to remove or change with this computer. I stopped some of the files from running on Shaw Secure. Did these files open again once I rebooted? Also can I get rid of the original ark and gmer and other files on the desktop? Does Kaspersky put files in the computer that I have to delete? Thanks for any info.

Wendy

Re: Popup browser with ads

Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. Shaw Secure will fix itself when you reboot.

Please disable Shaw Secure before uninstalling ComboFix and then re-enable it after doing so.

Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore Points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore Point.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix.

------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
