computer virus - cant do anything!!!!!!

hi!

my girlfriends families computer will not boot up all the way.
it started with popups and such
now its to the point where you can log in to a profile but no programs come up and, if you dont do it soon enough, you cant open task manager.
no start bar
nothing

help please!!!!
i was hoping that i could load a virus killer program onto a flash drive since i can still run programs from task manager
but i dont know what to do or how to get it off of there!

its a gateway 838gm
running xp media center 2005
i dont know what other info to give
but thats it
i just hope i can get her computer fixed before she kills mine too!!!!!!
