HELP!: Strange Problem with hard drives

Today iv run into the problem with my hard drives. Every time i attempt to open the hard drives i get a error.

This occurs with every hard drive, flash drive any drive i attempt to open.
But the strange thing is that i can right click and explore the drives i can open them. This in itself wouldn't present any real issues except i cannot do anything concerning the hard drives. Meaning i cant use Disk Defragmenter or scan my computer for viruses with Norton Antivirus 2008. the only thing i can possibly think of is a virus that Norton had found on a previous scan and had removed and had to restart to fix. Though im not sure this is a virus related issue it is the only thing i can think of. This is my only working computer and i really need it for collage work. So please help me resolve this issue as quickly as humanly possible. Thank you in advance for your time.
