Virus Help

Hello folks,

Thanx in advance to anyone who will try to help me. I am kinda new to this forum, and see that there is a lot of respect here.

I am running an hp media center (m7457c) with a 300 gig hard disk. It has a recovery partition and i also have the recovery disks. It has the the standard windows professional (media edition) operating system, and way too many programs to count.

I have encountered a virus that I cannot fix on my own. Several spywares and trojans have previously lost battle to me, and a couple of times I just backed up and wiped the drive clean.

I have about 250gb of media and software on this thing, and backing up is not totally beneficial right now. (time and disk constraint)

Symptoms:
Browsers randomly freeze up. Firefox, netscape and IE all freeze at random times.

Under firefox, i was getting errors loading youtube. Either "video is no longer available" for every video, or style sheet problems, or it said java script is turned off. Each time i refreshed the page, It would change errors. Sometimes, if i am patient enough, i could get the video to work after about 10-15 refreshes.

computer completely freezes, not as problematic as any other symptoms. But happens on occasion.

about every 5-10 minutes the program window (any of them) will deselect like something new is going to open, but nothing happens, and if I am typing, i have to reclick on it.

I was using clamwin. the problems started, different ones. google redirect, and popups mostly. I did several scans with clamwin and used knoppix to delete the problem files, as clamwin would not. I was careful not to delete any important files, however i don't remember any of the scan results.

After deleting the problem files, the problems changed to the ones first listed. so i downloaded avg free. it refuses to update, and no matter how many scans and fixes i do, there are no changes. It doesn't like to manually update either. I click on the update .bin files and such, and they refused to download. I ended up getting them to open up in Notepad++ and used that to save them to the desktop and the update completed sucessfully. Yet again several scans havn't fixed the problem.

I downloaded hijackthis and it refuses to install. I also tried an online scanner (free) but it wouldn't update even though it didn't report any problems with activeX. I don't remember the name of the scanner though.

I have also tried booting in knoppix, but i am a newbie to it, and i couldn't get either two virus programs on there to install properly, nor update. I tried via the K-menu and the promp. Both failing for some reason or another.

The computer does seem to be lagging in performance a bit, when a lot of memory is used, audio tends to have a buzzing within it.

I have gone through the system processes, however, the few I don't recognize don't seem to make a difference when I end them.

there are 2gb of ram in the computer, and the page file stays at a steady 697MBish usage. the cpu runs between 0% and 3%, once and a while spiking no higher than 20%. And the total mem usage of all processes add up to approx 554MB.

Thanks again, any other info needed will be provided, just ask.

Edited to fix spelling

BTW i have found a way to be a bit more careful in the future. Virtual PC. And no nonsense downloading. I know my stupidity, but thats about it

Also, forgot to mention. Under netscape, the exit button the top right is disabled. I use Alt+F4 to exit the browser.

I have to go to bed right now, but I will check back here tommorrow sometime. Once again thanx.
