Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

Please help! My computer has been infected with Anti-Virus-1 spyware and it is nearly unusable.

Anti-Virus-1 initially appears to be a legitimate antivirus program and claims that the computer is infected with 41 items - trojans, malware, spyware, etc. It says that it is an unregistered version, and that only the registered version has the capability to remove the infections. The registered version costs something like $59.95.

This takes over the computer by opening up an endless stream of popup windows and message bubbles, redirecting the browser to the registration website, opening what appears to be the Microsoft Windows Security Center stating that no virus protection is found, and even the little yellow bar at the top of the Internet Explorer window stating that an unregistered version of Anti-Virus-1 has been found - click here to register.

It will sometimes let you view one website, but then the next site you try to load or link you try to click will redirect you to one of their messages.

Anti-Virus-1 appears in the Windows notification area (bottom right corner near the clock) as an official-looking icon, but doesn't show up in the Add/Remove Programs list or in the Task List. It seems to disable existing antivirus software.

It is an extreme nuisance. I would appreciate any help to remove it from my computer.

Note: I'm using Windows XP Tablet Edition, Virus Scan and IE7 on a Gateway M275 tablet PC.

Thanks!

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

ComboFox Log File posted below.

I'm still having the problem. This malware even makes it difficult to get to the techsupportforum website from that computer - it seems to somehow block the URL.

Thanks!

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

Hello jsudds.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

Open Notepad and copy/paste all the text in the codebox below into Notepad:

Code:
Folder::
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\AV1

DirLook::
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\AV1
Save this Notepad file as CFScript.txt to your Desktop and then close the file.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript onto ComboFix

Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post that log, ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

Hello again, jsudds. Please tell us how your system is behaving.

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

C:\QooBox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt

A text file should open. Please post the contents of that file in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------

We need to install Java on your machine in order to run an online scan with Kaspersky.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and Save it to your Desktop.

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan.

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at any Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected.
  • It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

Hi,

I had some trouble running the Kaspersky scan.

I couldn't get VirusScan to remain disabled for the duration of the scan. For some reason, it would re-enable itself after about 5 minutes. I tried to exit it altogether, but couldn't find an option to do that. I tried to disable it by right-clicking on the icon in the Taskbar and selecting "Disable On-Access Scan," but that only worked for about 5 minutes. I also tried to open the VirusScan console and disable it from there, but that still only lasted ~5 minutes.

I even tried to go into the VirusScan console and then into VirusScan On-Access Scan Properties and uncheck "Enable on-access scanning at system startup." When I rebooted the computer, it was still enabled!

A few times, I tried to let the Kaspersky scanner run anyway - each time VirusScan re-enabled itself, I just re-disabled it by right clicking on the Taskbar icon. But twice the system shut down abruptly after 20-30 minutes of scanning. It didn't go into standby - it completely shut down and needed to be booted up again.

I assumed that was due to the laptop's power management settings, so I set it to Always On and ran the scan again.

I have just returned to the computer. The scan appears to have completed, but the scan window is closed and there is no indication of any scan report to save.

Instead, there is a message on the screen from VirusScan. It is in a window called "VirusScan On-Access Scan Messages." It says:

VirusScan Alert!

Date and Time: 2/22/2009 6:35:55 PM
Pathname: C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AV1\QWProtect.dll.vir
Detected As: Generic Downloader.x
State: Deleted

Then, it lists one item as follows:
Name: QWProtect.dll.vir
In Folder: C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AV1
Source: [blank]
Detected As: Generic Downloader.x
Detection Type: Trojan
Status: Deleted
Date and Time: 2/22/2009 6:35:55 PM
Application: Scanning Process

It gives me two choices of buttons to click: Remove Message or Close Window.

I left that window open for now to await your instructions.

If this was caused by having VirusScan running during the Kaspersky scan, do you have any idea how to disable VirusScan? I'm running McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0i.

Interestingly, though, there seems to be no sign of the Anti-Virus-1 symptoms since I ran ComboFix, so presumably that's a good sign.

Thanks!

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

McAfee is detecting files that ComboFix has already quarantined. I really wish you hadn't deleted those. I was going to collect them for analysis.

See if this works:

Double-click the taskbar icon to open the Security Center.
Click Advanced Menu (lower left).
Click Configure (left).
Click Computer & Files (upper left).
VirusScan can be disabled on the right.

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

Chemist,

I'm really sorry about that. It wasn't intentional.

I tried what you suggested and it did not bring up any options like the ones you said it would.

I double-clicked the VirusScan taskbar icon, but it did not open the Security Center. Instead, it opened a window called VirusScan On-Access Scan Statistics. That window has a "Disable" button (which I had tried earlier today and it didn't work any better than the other disable options), and a "Properties" button. Clicking Properties takes me to a VirusScan On-Access Scan Properties window, with many options, but none that work to disable the scanning.

Next, I found on my own the Windows Security Center and opened it. But I don't see any Advanced Menu on the lower left, nor anything that seems to relate to disabling VirusScan.

I am attaching screen images of both the Scan Statistics window and the Windows Security Center window.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again!

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

I can't see anything in the first doc. Is McAfee a must have?

I don't understand this. I have never had a user who couldn't run a Kas scan with VirusScan as their antivirus.

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

Chemist,

I'm not sure why you can't see the image in the first attachment. I can see it fine when I open it myself.

No, McAfee is not a must have. Actually, I was planning to remove it and switch to something else after I got this resolved anyway, since my current protection is obviously not sufficient. I was planning to install the CA Internet Security Suite available through Roadrunner. It has worked very well on my other computers for several years.

If you want me to remove McAfee, I'm willing to do so. Can you advise as to the best way to remove it?

Thanks!

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

Hello again, jsudds.

Please uninstall the following via the Add or Remove Programs section of your Control Panel if they still exist:

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise

Decline any prompt to restart your computer.

------------------------------------------------------

Please download the McAfee VirusScan Removal Tool VSCleanupTool.exe and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all programs and double-click VSCleanupTool.exe then click Run
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Restart the computer if asked.
  • Then delete VSCleanupTool.exe from your desktop.
------------------------------------------------------

Now see if you can run Kaspersky. Let me know if you have trouble.

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

OK.
  • Uninstalled McAfee VirusScan Enterprise via Add/Remove Programs. Successful.
  • Downloaded & ran VSCleanupTool.exe, then deleted it from desktop. Successful.
  • Ran Kaspersky scan. Successful. Log posted below.
  • No sign of Anti-virus-1 anymore. No popus, redirects, etc. Seems to be gone.

Thanks!

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.

Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore Points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore Point.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix.

------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

Hi. Sorry, I've been sick for a few days and haven't been able to follow up.

Tonight I uninstalled Combofix per your instructions and deleted all related logs, files, etc. from the desktop. There's still a shortcut on the desktop named "Anti-virus-1" that points to a file named Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AV1\av1.exe. I will delete that shortcut also - thought you'd want to know it wasn't removed, though the AV1 folder and program file it points to are both gone.

Next, I downloaded and installed the CA Internet Security Suite provided free through Roadrunner. I updated the suite after install and ran a full virus scan. It was clean!

Ran a spyware scan and it turned up the following 6 iems:

  • Cekar AM - Trojan
  • KaZaA - P2P - I've never used P2P sharing, not sure how KaZaA got on the computer.
  • Bifrost - Backdoor
  • WinSpywareProtect - Rogue Security Software
  • DoubleClick - Tracking Cookie
  • quantserve.com - Tracking Cookie
I quarantined the first 4 items, but did nothing with the cookies yet. I assume I should quarantine them all, right?

I plan to proceed with the rest of the security advice you gave for preventing future infections. But I have a few more questions:
  • I use a Netgear Wireless Router model WGR614 v5. My home wireless network was set up by a professional. He told me that the router has a built-in firewall and I should not use any other firewalls on my computers. It actually says this on Netgear's own website also - that using personal firewalls could cause conflicts with the router. (I'll paste some excerpts from Netgear below. Note: I do have trouble with my Internet connection dropping repeatedly.) Do you agree? Or do I need to activate the firewalls on this and my other computers?
  • In Tony Klein's article, can all of the items he recommends in items 7 through 11 be installed and active at the same time even with the CA antivirus and antispyware active? Or if not, which ones should be set for on demand scanning only?
Thanks!

Excerpts from Netgear troubleshooting site:

Quote:
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1134

Troubleshooting: Internet Connection Drops Repeatedly

If other computers are working, the problem is likely with the computer that doesn't work.

If you changed or upgraded your firewall software or anti-virus software, try disabling it. If it's causing the problem, contact the software manufacturer.
If you upgraded Windows XP, then the Windows firewall may be on without you being aware. Disable the firewall: NETGEAR routers do a better job. See Disabling Conflicting Firewalls.

Quote:
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1111

Disabling Conflicting Firewalls Such as Windows XP, McAfee, Norton, or Zone Alarm

Often two firewalls on the same LAN conflict. Both are trying to do the same job; the conflict may cause an otherwise good Internet connection to drop. If this happens, use the NETGEAR firewall, and disable the other. Two situations are described here, but the general approach applies to any firewall active on a NETGEAR LAN.

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

Yes, quarantine them all.

Yes, those all can be installed alongside your antivirus suite, except for the firewall. There has been a change in thinking about firewalls lately. In your case especially, I agree with Netgear. Don't install a third-party firewall and don't use Windows Firewall.

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

I installed the entire CA Security Suite. Since I don't need the firewall, should I:
  1. Keep it on my system but disable it?
  2. Try to use system restore to go back before I installed the suite, and then reinstall everything but the firewall? (There is only one restore point, but it is from Thursday night, and I'm pretty sure it is from right before I installed the suite.)
  3. Uninstall the entire suite? (Or just the firewall?)
If you recommend option 3, what is the best way to do so?

Thanks!

Re: Anti-Virus-1 Spyware Removal - Please Help

I am unfamiliar with CA. If you can, just uninstall the firewall part in the Add or Remove Programs section of your Control Panel.
