Need help removing Win32.Zafi.B
Started receiving security warning box for Win32.Zafi.B yesterday. I haven't done anything to computer yet except hit the 'Enable Protection' button on the false security warning which of course leads to the fake software, I closed the page without clicking anything. The box keeps reappearing 5 - 20 minutes after x-ing them out and it keeps knocking me off the internet. Also yesterday it forced a shutdown of computer and black screen came up during reboot instead of Windows loading page.
I signed into one of my stock sites, does this mean they now have my password? I will change it anyway once this is fixed. Here are the logs requested. Thanks so much for your assistance. I just remembered, I did run my scan yesterday and 4 items were quarentined and I manually blocked svchost.exe . In the log there were 2 of the following listed below my manual block, "SystemGuards have allowed a one time change to your computer". I checked my Windows security settings, which I had disabled since I use the McAfee Security Center through AOL, but they had all been turned on, including Windows Firewall. Should I go ahead and turn off all these again? I have not touched anything yet. Thanks again! sc delete mailKmd DDS (Ver_09-02-01.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Owner at 17:18:35.17 on Mon 02/02/2009 Internet Explorer: 7.0.5730.11 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.502.174 [GMT -5:00] AV: McAfee VirusScan *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) FW: McAfee Personal Firewall *enabled* ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exe svchost.exe svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\AOLAcsd.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\TopSpeed\2.0\aoltsmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k HTTPFilter C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\MSC\mcmscsvc.exe c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mcafee\mna\mcnasvc.exe c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mcafee\mcproxy\mcproxy.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\VIRUSS~1\mcshield.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\MPF\MPFSrv.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$VAIO_VEDB\Binn\sqlservr.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\RegSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Event Service\VESMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\VAIO Entertainment Platform\VCSW\VCSW.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\VAIO Entertainment Platform\VzCdb\VzCdbSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\VAIO Entertainment Platform\VzCdb\VzFw.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apoint.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apntex.exe C:\WINDOWS\RTHDCPL.EXE C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Power Management\SPMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Sony\ISB Utility\ISBMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Update 2\VAIOUpdt.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\1137443843\ee\AOLSoftware.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\VIRUSS~1\mcsysmon.exe C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\eBay\eBay Toolbar2\eBayTBDaemon.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Google\torsi2225487.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0\waol.exe C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0\shellmon.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\VIRUSS~1\mcods.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee\VIRUSS~1\mcvsshld.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxsrvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\dds.com ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uStart Page = hxxp://my.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MyeBay uSearch Page = hxxp://www.google.com uSearch Bar = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uSearchMigratedDefaultURL = hxxp://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=utf8&oe=utf8 uSearchAssistant = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uSearchURL,(Default) = hxxp://www.google.com/search?q=%s mSearchAssistant = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uURLSearchHooks: AOLSearchHook Class: {54eb34ea-e6be-4cfd-9f4f-c4a0c2eafa22} - Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete. Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper at this forum. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running combofix: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix * Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. McAfee Virus Scan Double-click the taskbar icon to open the Security Center Click Advanced Menu (lower left) Click Configure (left) Click Computer & Files (upper left) VirusScan can be disabled on the right. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Re: Need help removing Win32.Zafi.B
Fist of all, thank you for your assistance I lok forward to being able to use my laptop again. The log requested is provided below. Here is some additional information. Today when I turned on the computer after Mcafee did its weekly scan I have not seen the Zafi.B security warning and my regular home page came up instead of the warning I had been getting. I did the ComboFix but it never came back to my desktop so after an hour of waiting I did a manual shut off of the computer. I hope this does not cause any problems, let me know if I have to redo the scan. Also the reboot went fine after the manual shut down.

Re: Need help removing Win32.Zafi.B
Hi Dawn -
Looks like it did what we needed it to do. You should have normal internet access again. Let me know if that's not the case. Copy and paste the following into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4): Quote:
![]() Close Notepad. Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.

Re: Need help removing Win32.Zafi.B
I apologize for my delays in getting back to you. I had a medical procedure on Thursday that has made for some rough days for me.
The little I have used the laptop, today being the first time since my last reply, it seems to be working up to par. I have upgraded my Java as you suggested. Just for your information, in case it is important, the ESET scan somehow did not complete the first time and I had to redownload the Active X controls and redo the whole process. Once you tell me this is solved can I remove all the logs and downloaded programs/scans? Thanks again for your help, Dawn # version=4 # OnlineScanner.ocx=1.0.0.635 # OnlineScannerDLLA.dll=1, 0, 0, 79 # OnlineScannerDLLW.dll=1, 0, 0, 78 # OnlineScannerUninstaller.exe=1, 0, 0, 49 # vers_standard_module=3837 (20090208) # vers_arch_module=1.064 (20080214) # vers_adv_heur_module=1.066 (20070917) # EOSSerial=5a9935f9fc727c47b082c0744e981aa5 # end=finished # remove_checked=false # unwanted_checked=true # utc_time=2009-02-08 11:46:07 # local_time=2009-02-08 06:46:07 (-0500, Eastern Standard Time) # country="United States" # osver=5.1.2600 NT Service Pack 3 # scanned=266951 # found=1 # scan_time=2708 C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Google\lptspcp.dll.vir a variant of Win32/TrojanDownloader.FakeAlert.YR trojan B813BFBF94DA1EF116925AACA19A4583 |

Re: Need help removing Win32.Zafi.B
Hi Dawn -
No need to apologize, Real Life always comes first. I hope the procedure was successful and you recover swiftly. Thanks for the info on the Eset scan...sometimes that happens, for various reasons, and that's their recommended solution, so kudos to you for doing so. Sorry it added extra time to the process. Quote:
The item Eset found is in ComboFix quarantine, and will be addressed by uninstalling ComboFix as instructed below Other than that.... Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OKcombofix /u This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points. Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and look into the following free programs:
In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it. Re: Need help removing Win32.Zafi.B
Thank you for your well wishes! I am happy to hear my laptop is looking clean again. I have added all the additional protection programs you mentioned. I was very surprised when I got this Malware, I have not had any problems with something getting through Mcafee Security Center before.
Just a couple of questions. I already have automatic Windows update and security updates, is this the same as "Microsoft Windows Update" you mention? I did the Secundia scan, should I automtically follow all their suggestions? Also Secundia said I had several versions of Java. I went to Add/remove programs and got rid of older versions. Do I need to do anything else to remove any additional components? Thank You! Dawn |

Re: Need help removing Win32.Zafi.B
I am starting to feel better today - yeah!
Unfortunately I do have one more question. The Secundia scan came up with several versions of Flash Player, Macromedia and Adobe. After several attempts I finally have it down to two versions of Adobe Flash Player, version 9.x and 10.x. Even after doing the Secundia recommended download and redoing their scan, I still have this same problem. I have manually gone into C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Macromed\Flash\ to delete this older version, only the 10.x version shows up in Add/Remove programs, but am unable to. How do I get rid of the extra Flash Player? Or am I worrying over nothing? Otherwise everything is great! Thank you, Dawn |

Re: Need help removing Win32.Zafi.B
Hi Dawn -
Glad to hear you're beginning to feel better. About the Flash, I do see this in the Add or Remove list, but that might not be current now. Adobe Flash Player 9 ActiveX Did you use this uninstaller? http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/view...nalId=tn_14157 Does Secunia say where the older version is located? If you expand each section, it should say where it's located. If you've done the thorough scan, it sometimes find things in odd locations. Also, some applications might be using older versions of flash.

Re: Need help removing Win32.Zafi.B
Secundia did show that some versions were in AOL. I deleted those versions. I did not do Add/Remove for Adobe Flash 9.x because I had done the upgrade first to Adobe Flash 10.x and when I went back to Add/Remove the last version was the only one showing. The 9.x came up in the Scundia thorough scan I did after the upgrade to 10.x. I went to the file and deleted that version. The funny part is yesterday when I went to YouTube it said I needed to upgrade my Adobe Flash Player. So now in Add/Remove I have Adobe Flash Player 10.x Active X and Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin. But now as of the latest Secundia scan everything is up to date. So somehow I managed to get it all worked out.
I think you can put me down as solved. Thanks again for your help and a great job! Since I donate my own time for tax services, I really appreciate and understand the time you put in! Dawn |
