Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
I have a red circle with a white cross and "warning!security report - your computer is infected etc" that keeps appearing.
IE or Firefox pops up randomly with spyware/malware removal recommendations. The current browser I am typing on right at the top is informing me I have several trojans and that my computer is infected. Computer is running very slow, not too sure what extra info I can provide, that's all that seems to be showing. I'm no good with computers, so be gentle. :) Logs are requested: DDS (Version 1.0) - NTFSx86 Run by Michelle at 18:34:50.89 on Wed 03/12/2008 Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.1014.337 [GMT 11:00] ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k rpcss C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k NetworkService C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalService C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\RegSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\pctsAuxs.exe C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\pctsSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\pctsTray.exe C:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC4\WinVNC4.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\alg.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscntfy.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\GrooveMonitor.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\frmwrk32.exe C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\ONENOTEM.EXE C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\DOCUME~1\Michelle\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.203\gmer.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Michelle\My Documents\dds.com C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uStart Page = hxxp://www.google.com.au/ BHO: {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - Re: Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
Sorry about that, I have on this post. :)
I'm able to reply via Mozilla browser, but IE has given up on me. My desktop also has been replaced with a flashing warning dangerous spyware message. Thanks. :) Last edited by pcnooby; 12-06-2008 at 02:39 PM. |

Re: Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
Hello pcnooby.
Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. ------------------------------------------------------ Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate. Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper. ------------------------------------------------------ Please explain why this computer has no antivirus program installed and running. This is an open invitation for infection. It can take as little as eight seconds to infect an unprotected computer. Please keep this computer offline except when downloading tools and posting in the forum until we get one installed. ------------------------------------------------------ One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation. Please read this: How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud? ------------------------------------------------------ We will begin with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix * Ensure you have disabled all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review. ------------------------------------------------------ You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please uninstall HijackThis 1.99.1 in the Add or Remove Programs section of your Control Panel and delete your current version. Please download HijackThis and Save it to your Desktop. Alternate link Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click 'Run' or 'Install' and follow the prompts to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis Upon install, HijackThis should open for you. Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double-click on HijackThis.exe 1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'. 2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit 'Scan' and then click on 'Save log'. 3. Please post the HijackThis log in your next reply. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless. 4. Close HijackThis now please. ------------------------------------------------------ Please post the following in your next reply: ComboFix.txt new HijackThis log If you have any questions along the way...STOP and ask them before proceeding. |

Re: Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
Thanks for that, I haven't used this since it was rebuilt and only using it because my partner's kids wanted to use it. I installed AVG but it was having difficulty uploading updates on it. The AVG installer has remained on the machine, but as you have pointed out, the actual program itself isn't there. :(
I haven't used it for internet banking thankfully, but will still change all my passwords and advise the bank just in case. I've only viewed my Gmail once or twice on this. Re: Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
Hello again, pcnooby.
------------------------------------------------------ Close any open browsers. Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix. Open Notepad and copy/paste all the text in the quotebox below into Notepad: Quote:
![]() Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript onto ComboFix If you are prompted to update ComboFix, please click Yes Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post that log, ComboFix.txt in your next reply. Note: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall. When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis. Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file. Please let your helper know you successfully submitted the file. ------------------------------------------------------ |

Re: Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
Hello again, pcnooby. Please tell us how your system is behaving.
------------------------------------------------------ Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. ------------------------------------------------------ Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Ensure your external and/or USB drives are inserted during the scan. Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan at Kaspersky Online Scanner Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
![]() **Note** To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
------------------------------------------------------ Please post the following in your next reply: Kaspersky report report on system behavior |

Re: Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
I'm currently downloading the Java, it's got another half an hour to go.
In the meantime, the computer is running as it was, nice and quick, the desktop is back to normal, so is the tray and the browsers are no longer randomly popping up. :-) I'll post up the rest of what you have posted after the download, thank you! |

Re: Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
Feels like it, I am running wireless via Exetel and in all honesty, want to switch to ADSL or similar, my current download spped is 32kb/s which is pretty dire for "wireless broadband".
Kaspersky is just updating now so hopefully won't be too long! |

Re: Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
After all that waiting Kaspersky identified 5 threat names that I spotted (only listed as a number, no names to give you) and was at 63 odd % complete when my computer blue screened, crashed and proceeded to reboot. :(
It's running another scan, hopefully it won't do the same! |

Re: Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
Hello again, pcnooby. All the finds by Kaspersky are in ComboFix's quarantine folder, except for the VNC entries which are false positives due to potential.
How is your machine behaving? You should be able to install AVG now. Let me know and I will give you some final instructions. Last edited by chemist; 12-07-2008 at 07:47 AM. |

Re: Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
Hi Chemist,
I'm on my work PC at the moment so when I get back from work later today I'll turn the lappy back on and double check it's still alive. Apart from the hiccups when using Kaspersky, the machine is running as it was, nice and fast with no strange goings on or niggles. :-) |

Re: Trojan.virtumonde found by Spyware doctor but infection still on pc
Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.
As far as those infected objects listed in the Kaspersky report, those are safely tucked away in ComboFix's quarantine folder or in old System Restore Points, which we will be taking care of now. Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK: combofix /u This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore point. Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already. You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix. ------------------------------------------------------ MICROSOFT UPDATES It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM It is imperative that you have an AntiVirus program running on your computer. Connecting to the internet without an AntiVirus program is an open invitation for infection. Here are a few very good free Antivirus products which are available: Select one of these, or another of your choice. Download, install, update definitions, and run a full system scan. Do not install more than one AntiVirus program as they will conflict with each other.SPYWARE PREVENTION This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:

Hi Chemist,
That's great, thank you so much for your help! :-D I've uninstalled Combo Fix this morning then switched off the lappy, tonight when I get back I'll be downloading AVG only then the additional spyware programs you've suggested. Again thank you for all your time and effort. :-) |
