Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

Hey all, I have recently had Norton picking up on this virus and quarantining it on my computer. It is apparently located in C:\Windows\System32\CKVO0.DLL.

I'm normally pretty good with keeping the computer clean and up-to-date but this one slipped through the net (courtesy I believe of the neighbours thumbdrive... ).

Anyways, any help would be much-o appreciated. I'll come past and check this thread fairly regularly. Thanks in advance.

Here's the Hijackthis log:

Re: Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

Thanks for the response Chemist.

I think I've knocked this one on the head myself after having a bit of a search around and reading up a bit on it. I had a bit of a play with combofix and mucked about with cmd.exe in safe mode and I'm pretty sure I've gotten rid of the autorun.inf files for good as well as the hidden lky.exe target file on all my drives (internal, external, thumbs and MP3 player!).

Thanks again though and carry on. Rest assured if I need further help I'll be back!

Re: Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

ComboFix is an extremely powerful tool and is not recommended for unsupervised use.

Doing so could leave your computer unbootable and your data unretrievable.

I would advise to post the C:\ComboFix.txt log here for review.

Re: Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

OK. I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone else run combofix unsupervised, just saying that I have....

Latest Combofix log here for your viewing pleasure - this was from the last run through to clear the autorun.inf file from my 2 internal harddrives (c and m) and the attached external drive (k). After this I added a folder "autorun.inf" to each drive to stop the "autorun.inf" file from being able to be created again and then rebooted to safe mode and deleted the file "lky.exe" from each drive. This has seemed to work very well with my hidden files and folders again viewable and remaining so after re-booting numerous times. I can see that the "kamsoft.exe" thingy appears to be the culprit.

Combofix moved the following files to it's quarantine folder when running:

inst.exe.vir
autorun.inf.vir

About the only drama I have currently (that I am aware of) is that my NAV (Internet Security 2005) won't start in 'auto-protect mode' even though it is checked to do just that.

Thanks for checking for me - appreciated.

Re: Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

Hello sirav. Your computer is still infected.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt

A text file should open. Please post the contents of that file in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt

A text file should open. Please post the contents of that file in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------

Delete ComboFix.exe from your desktop.

------------------------------------------------------

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

Open Notepad and copy/paste all the text in the quotebox below into Notepad:

Quote:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/security-center/hijackthis-log-help/312247-trojan-packed-nsanti.html#post1807488

Collect::
C:\lky.exe
c:\windows\system32\gasretyw0.dll
c:\windows\system32\gasretyw1.dll
c:\windows\system32\kamsoft.exe

FileLook::
C:\autorun.PNF
Save this Notepad file as CFScript.txt to your Desktop and then close the file.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript onto ComboFix

If you are prompted to update ComboFix, please click Yes

Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post that log, ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed.

With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK. A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.

Please let your helper know you successfully submitted the file.

------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

Please close HijackThis now.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

Add-Remove Programs.txt
ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt
ComboFix.txt
new HijackThis log

If you have any questions along the way...STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

Hello again, sirav. Thanks for submitting the file. Please tell us how your system is behaving.

Please uninstall the following via Start->(or My Computer)->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs if it still exists:

Viewpoint Media Player<<This is considered foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval, but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". Please read here and here

If you decide to uninstall it, also delete the following Folders if they still exist:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint

------------------------------------------------------

I see you have P2P software ( Vuze ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here, here, and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove this program, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you decide to uninstall Vuze, also delete these Folders if they still exist:

C:\Program Files\Vuze

------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10 and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10 The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start(or My Computer) > Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs
  • Click (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE, J2SE, Java(TM) SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go back to your Control Panel and click the Java icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button.
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
      • Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window.
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window.
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
    • Delete jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe from your desktop.
------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at any Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

Please close HijackThis now.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

Kaspersky report
new HijackThis log
report on system behavior

Re: Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

Thanks again Chemist. The computer has been running well.

I'm posting from my home computer at the moment but will be back in at work in the morning (that's the computer we've been dealing with). I'll run through the suggestions/scans in your above post then and post back when I'm done.

Thanks again.

Report on Computers Behaviour

Well, the PC seems to be working fine and at least back to normal. No idea what that WMP Codec thing is that Kaspersky found though... Interestingly it's in my "Downloads" folder which leads me to believe that it's something that I have chosen to download! ***?

I'm pretty sure the NAV autoprotect thing is rectified now, but I'll just check again after this post.

If you are wondering what the "V" Drive (or the "Y" Drive for that matter) is that Kaspersky scanned, they are network drives located on my QNAP NAS thingy.

But otherwise all seems pretty good. Thanks again for your assistance chemist. It's a great service that you all do here and it is hugely appreciated by all us clowns who can't seem to keep those viruses at bay.

Oh yeh - about the torrenting stuff you mentioned before....Sorry, can't live without it. I do take care however and I only tend to torrent from fairly reputable places (Dimeadozen, bt.tree, some private trackers) and my motto here is "Constant Vigilance!". Everything gets checked and scanned regardless of where it comes from. I use a fairly good degree of commonsense usually (although there is that nagging issue about those WMP codecs isn't there.....).

Thanks again - you are a superhero.

Re: Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

Hello again, sirav. We will delete those files in ComboFix's quarantine folder when we are done.

Please use Symantec's guide to remove the Norton Quarantine files.

------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below into Notepad:

Code:
@echo off
if exist "%temp%\log.txt" del "%temp%\log.txt"

for %%g in (

C:\Downloads\Smitfraudfix
C:\Downloads\WMP Codecs etc

) do (
rd /s/q %%g >nul 2>and1
if exist %%g echo.%%g>>"%temp%\log.txt"
)
if exist "%temp%\log.txt" ( start notepad "%temp%\log.txt"
) else echo.Deleted Successfully !!

pause
del %0
Save this Notepad file as fix.bat and choose to Save as type: - All Files then close the Notepad file.
It should look like this:

Double-click on fix.bat to run it.

Tell me what it says in your next reply. Press any key to continue.

Re: Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

Hey chemist. Ran the fix.bat and it said "Deleted Successfully!" and then when I closed it it had disappeared off the desktop and in it's place a file called and1 appeared.

Overall the computer's working fine except for that nagging NAV issue. When I boot the computer NAV seems to start fine but after about a minute it switches to 'auto-protect off'. Once I turn it back on again it stays that way for the rest of the time. Weirdness.

Thanks again.

Re: Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

Hello again, sirav. You can delete the and1 file from your desktop.

------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

cmd /c rd /s /q "C:\Downloads\WMP Codecs etc"

A DOS window will open and close again, this is normal.

------------------------------------------------------

Not sure about the NAV thing. You could contact Norton(Symantec) about the problem or visit our Security and Firewalls Forum

Did you remove the Norton quarantine files? Is your Norton up to date?

Re: Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

Yep NAV's up-to-date. I'll chase that one up through Norton methinks.

I've removed the Norton Quarantine files and NAV is up-to-date.

Thanks again.

Re: Trojan.Packed.NsAnti

Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.

As far as those infected objects listed in the Kaspersky report, those are safely tucked away in ComboFix's quarantine folder or in old System Restore Points, which we will be taking care of now.

Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK:
combofix /u
This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore point.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix.

------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy is an excellent spyware remover and also offers real-time protection against critical registry changes. Don't use the Immunize feature in Spybot if you use SpywareBlaster. See tutorial here
Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.
