Win32: Agent-QNI and Trojan-gen
Hello, I appreciate your time and all of the work you do here. This is my first time posting to a Tech Help forum, so hopefully I'll be clear.
The first sign of any problem was when my computer rebooted while I was in the middle of working. No warning whatsoever. When Windows had started back up, there was an icon in the system tray, a red button with a white "X" in it and a balloon popped up, warning of malicious spyware or something along those lines. Knowing better than to click on such a thing, I immediately opened my antivirus to do a scan (AVG, it had been running in the background). To ensure i had the latest protection, I tried running the updater, and was told the server couldn't connect. When i tried to go to AVG's website, no luck. Things went from bad to worse and eventually I found my AVG not working at all, so I downloaded Avast!, disconnected from my network, and swapped anti-viruses. Using the Avast! Boot-time scan, I discovered the following: beep.sys in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache (Win32:Agent-QNI [Trj]) beep.sys in C:\WINDOWS\system32\divers (Win32:Agent-QNI [Trj]) karna.dat in C:\WINDOWS (Win32: Trojan-gen {Other}) karna.dat in C:\WINDOWS\system32 (Win32: Trojan-gen {Other}) I was recommended this site by a friend who had suffered the virtumonde (sp?) fiasco. Unfortunately, the virus isn't letting me on there, either, so I'm currently on my backup computer. I followed the "NEW INSTRUCTIONS" and couldn't get the gmer.exe to run on my infected laptop, so (as per a response i read somewhere) i went to the next step and have pasted the results, and attached the file as requested. Once again, I thank you for your time! Re: Win32: Agent-QNI and Trojan-gen
Hello, g2thelow. Please tell us how your system is behaving.
Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. ------------------------------------------------------ Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4): Code:
REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run-] "<NO NAME>"=- It should look like this: Double-click on fix.reg and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. Please delete the file afterwards. ------------------------------------------------------ Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK: cmd /c del /a/q "c:\windows\Tasks\1-Click Maintenance.job" ------------------------------------------------------ Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. ------------------------------------------------------ Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
![]() **Note** To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
------------------------------------------------------ Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here. Please close HijackThis now. ------------------------------------------------------ Please post the following in your next reply: Kaspersky report new HijackThis log report on system behavior |

Re: Win32: Agent-QNI and Trojan-gen
I've downloaded the files and I'm beginning the process. One question: do you want to know how my system was behaving when I first contacted you or now? I've done nothing more than what I was told to do, but give me the word and I'll check it out. If I don't hear back by the time I've done the above, I'll post what I have and wait for your response before doing anything else on my computer. Thanks!

Re: Win32: Agent-QNI and Trojan-gen
Ok, i made it as far as the Kaspersky Online Scanner and IE couldn't connect (couldn't find the server). I guess this would fall under the behavior category as well, perhaps. Everything up to this point has gone without a hitch.

Ok, the Eset Online Scan seemed to work just fine. Along with the ESET log, i've posted the new Hijack This log.

Re: Win32: Agent-QNI and Trojan-gen
Hello again, g2thelow. All the finds by ESET are in ComboFix's quarantine folder. No malware is showing in your logs.
Please put your computer through its paces and let me know how it behaves. Are you still unable to access certain sites? If so, what sites? |

Re: Win32: Agent-QNI and Trojan-gen
Hey chemist, so far I haven't had any trouble accessing any sites. I checked AVG's site, Avast!'s site, Spybot's site, and I'm actually posting this message from the computer we've been working on. The transfer speed has been pretty slow at times, but I could be experiencing firewall issues or just general network lag. As soon as I get the all-clear I'm going to rebuild my security. I have to admit, I've slacked in that department. I used to be so adamant about my security, but after many years without any issues, I guess I've become complacent.
I did install Spybot (one of the programs taken out of commission by this), but haven't run any scans and left the teatimer off. I guess, what's next? Need me to try anything or elaborate on anything else? Thanks a whole heck of a lot! -g2 |

Re: Win32: Agent-QNI and Trojan-gen
Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.
Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK: C:\WINDOWS\gmer_uninstall.cmd Press any key to continue once you see that message. ------------------------------------------------------ As far as those infected objects listed in the ESET report, those are safely tucked away in ComboFix's quarantine folder or in old System Restore Points, which we will be taking care of now. Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK: combofix /uThis will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore point. Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already. You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix. ------------------------------------------------------ MICROSOFT UPDATES It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. SPYWARE PREVENTION This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved. |
