Frightening Spyware, possibly brastk.exe
Hello
Recently I believe my computer has been infected with a type of spyware called brastk.exe. I noticed this because I have Zonealarm firewall that alerted me that brastk.exe was trying to access the internet. I denied it access. Also on my traybar there is a red circle icon with a white X through it. It keeps displaying the message: "Your computer is infected! . . . . Click here to protect your computer from spyware" I wanted to click it but I wasn't sure if it would lead to more spyware. Also my homepage for internet explorer has been changed to google.com I ran AVG Anti-spyware, Spybot, AVG - antivirus, and then AD-aware SE in that order, but the traybar icon will still not disappear. I am afraid that the spyware is too deep to detect. I would really really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help. Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. ------------------------------------------------------ Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Re: Frightening Spyware, possibly brastk.exe
Although you must hear it a lot, I just wanted to say that I sincerely appreciate your help, chemist.
I attached the logs you requested. I just wanted to note that I was unable to figure out how to disable my AVG anti-virus and AVG anti-spyware before I ran combofix.exe but I did turn the ZoneAlarm firewall off completely. Although the scary red circle with a white x through it is not appearing anymore, I was wondering if you could explain how exactly brastk.exe got into my machine. I now remember that at the time, I was playing the online multiplayer game called "Runescape" but I thought I was protected because I had AVG and ZoneAlarm firewall. How can I prevent this from happening if I choose to play again, or should I just not play? Would you recommend buying an expensive security software like Norton or McAfee? here are the logs: ComboFix: ComboFix 08-11-10.01 - smith 2008-11-10 22:01:41.1 - NTFSx86 Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.535 [GMT -5:00] Running from: c:\documents and settings\smith\Desktop\Combo-Fix.exe * Created a new restore point . Re: Frightening Spyware, possibly brastk.exe
Hello, xxstriker1.
------------------------------------------------------ Hard to say how you got infected--I am unfamiliar with Runescape. If you buy an antivirus, stay away from Norton and McAfee. ------------------------------------------------------ Delete the following File if it still exists: c:\windows\Tasks\McAfee.com Scan for Viruses - My Computer (DELL3100-Rashmin).job ------------------------------------------------------ Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. ------------------------------------------------------ Please run this online scan to help look for remnants. Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
![]() **Note** To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
------------------------------------------------------ Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here. Please close HijackThis now. ------------------------------------------------------ Please post the following in your next reply: Kaspersky report new HijackThis log |

Re: Frightening Spyware, possibly brastk.exe
Hi chemist,
I attached the logs below I was wondering if it would be okay for me to delete the Norton ghost program and all the backups that it has made in the D: drive because the license has expired and I don't think any new backups are being made. Also should I install service pack 3 for windows because it may still have software incompatibilities so is it worth it to do it now. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7 REPORT Wednesday, November 12, 2008 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 version: 7.0.25.0 Program database last update: Wednesday, November 12, 2008 05:18:02 Records in database: 1381160 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scan settings: Scan using the following database: extended Scan archives: yes Scan mail databases: yes Scan area - Re: Frightening Spyware, possibly brastk.exe
Hello again, xxstriker1. You can update to SP3 once we are done. And yes, it's OK if you uninstall Norton Ghost.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below into Notepad: Code:
@echo off if exist "%temp%\log.txt" del "%temp%\log.txt" for %%g in ( "C:\Documents and Settings\smith\My Documents\Virus logs\May 2007\SmitfraudFix.exe" "C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\Common\ComponentMgr\HoldingArea\WebSys2\WebSys.mmz" "C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\Musicmatch Jukebox\WebSys\offline.mmz" ) do ( del /a/f %%g >nul 2>and1 if exist %%g echo.%%g>>"%temp%\log.txt" ) for %%g in ( %systemdrive%\rsit C:\Documents and Settings\smith\My Documents\Virus logs\May 2007\SmitfraudFix ) do ( rd /s/q %%g >nul 2>and1 if exist %%g echo.%%g>>"%temp%\log.txt" ) if exist "%temp%\log.txt" ( start notepad "%temp%\log.txt" ) else echo.Deleted Successfully !! pause del %0 It should look like this: Double-click on fix.bat to run it. Tell me what it says in your next reply. Press any key to continue. ------------------------------------------------------ You posted a HijackThis log using version 1.99.1. Please delete that version and post a fresh HijackThis log using version 2.0.2. ------------------------------------------------------ |

Re: Frightening Spyware, possibly brastk.exe
Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.
Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK: C:\WINDOWS\gmer_uninstall.cmd Press any key to continue once you see that message. ------------------------------------------------------ Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK: combofix /uThis will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore point. Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already. You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix. ------------------------------------------------------ MICROSOFT UPDATES It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. SPYWARE PREVENTION This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
