Redirect/Jump Problems
I have finally gotten irritated enough to try to get rid of this annoying problem. I just hope it hasn't done any harm to my computer. I have read other threads on this and here is my HijackThis log. Please let me know what to do to fix my computer.
Thank you. Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
Ok. I think I've gotten everything done this time. My main problem has been the redirect/jump issue when using the internet. It sends me to all kinds of sites other than what was intended.
I also have problems shutting down my computer. There seems to be something running that needs to shut down first. Unfortunately I don't know the exact names, but one was "WindowsParking...(something)" and "GrooveMonitor". I remember looking them up a while back and I believe it has something to do with MS Office. (which I recently installed) My internet and computer tend to be a pretty sluggish on occasion but restarting fixes that problem for a while. Thank you for taking the time to help. Please let me know if I missed anything. Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
Let's take care of the malware issues first, then see what we can do about the others.
I see no evidence of an AntiVirus program on your system. This must be resolved. Connecting to the Internet without antivirus protection is a "Welcome" doormat for malware. It can take as little as eight seconds to infect an unprotected computer. We will address that during the course of this fix, after we've rid the machine of some malware. Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
I figured I'd need an anti-virus program at some point. I just don't know which one would be better. Would you recommend one over another?

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
Yes, indeed. I'll recommend one once I gather a bit more information
Please go to: VirusTotal

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
Good job.
Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab: * Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. * Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types * Click Yes to confirm and then click OK. Using Windows Explorer, or Windows Search, locate and delete the following file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wb43177.dll Let me know if you have any trouble with that. Also let me know how the machine is behaving. We'll still have a bit more work to do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
Ok. That was easy. I deleted the file. As for my computer, it seems to be running much faster now. Pages are not taking forever to load. I haven't used my computer much in the last day but it appears as though the redirect problem is fixed.
I noticed that my internet browse security settings have been changed. (Stuff about viewing over a secure connection and leaving a secure connection) I know all that is probably better for my computer but at what point do I not proceed? How do I know what sites to trust, etc? I know you said there is more work to be done but when everything is set but when we're through would you mind giving me a quick run-down of the do's and don't's? I really appreciate all you are doing for me. Caroline |

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
Hi Caroline -
Yes, but let's take care of a couple more things first. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please perform this online scan to help look for remnants Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner **Note** To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
I got everything done okay. I just noticed a file that appeared on my desktop. "Thumbs.db" I only noticed it today but I know it wasn't there a few days ago as I cleaned up my desktop. It says it was modified on 11/4/08 11:44pm. I don't know if that's important or not. Here are the other log files.

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
Ok, that looks good. Those items are in ComboFix quarantine, or Recycle Bin, and will be removed when we uninstall ComboFix using a special directive.
About the IE message... I would recommend you visit Windows Update, and allow Internet Explorer 7 to be installed. It's more secure than IE6. That message typically shows up when settings are restored to default. It means you're changing from an http to an https server, or vice versa. You are about to view pages over a secure connection. - OR - You are about to leave a secure Internet connection. It will be possible for others to view information you send To manually change that setting in IE, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced and uncheck the box next to "Warn if changing between secure and non secure mode". Or, the better option is...the first time the message appears check the box "In the Future, do not show this warning". About thumbs.db It's a legit Windows file which appeared because we unhid hidden/system files. It should hide again when we uninstall ComboFix. In any case, it' not malicious. Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OKcombofix /u This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points. Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and look into the following free programs:

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
ARRGGHH!!!
It seemed as though everything was okay. I changed my MVPS Host file, then I went to MS Windows update and downloaded and installed the 20 updates that were required. After restarting my computer to complete the installation I have not been able to access any websites without being redirected to the Dell page that reads: "Sorry, we couldn't find hxxp://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/ads%3Fclient. Here are some related websites:" or something similar. I had this page (techsupport) saved as a shortcut on my desktop, but I am not able to access my links either without being redirected. I can see the desired page but when the page finishes loading it switches to the Dell page. I had to hit the Stop button so that it would stay on this page. Using Google to search for this forum and other sites seems to work fine. I would like to continue to add all the programs that you recommended but I don't want to interfere with anything in case there is still a problem. Is this a new bug or just something screwy with Dell? |

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Place a check next to the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Page_URL = http://www.google.com/ig/dell?hl=en&...suk&channel=us Close HijackThis now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let me know if that helps.

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
That didn't help but I figured out (I think) what the problem was.
At some point in updating Windows and restarting my computer, Internet Explorer was removed. I had noticed that an icon was missing off my desktop but couldn't remember what had been there. After following your instructions and not having any luck I realized what was missing. I went to Add/Remove windows components and saw that IE was not installed. I have since installed Firefox and everything seems to be working fine. Do I need to have IE installed or can I use Firefox exclusively? I also have a few other questions as well, if you wouldn't mind helping me: 1) Do I need to purchase a firewall or is there a permanent free version to download? I checked out the link you included and unless I am mistaken they are all trial versions. Would you recommend one over another? 2) In one of the articles you linked to it read: "In addition, never give out personal information of any sort online...." Does this include online shopping and banking? Thank you, Caroline |

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
Hi Caroline -
Internet Explorer is an integral part of Windows. It's highly unlikely a visit to the Windows Update site would leave you with no Internet Explorer. If, as part of the updates, you installed IE7 as I suggested, it should be listed in Add or Remove Programs as Windows Internet Explorer 7. It's also available as a single download here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx You may need IE for some things, such as visiting the Windows Update site. That can also be done using IE Tab addon for Firefox, but I have IE on my machines; some sites render better using IE. Here is a list of some firewalls. I like Online Armor best of these, many people like ZoneAlarm and Comodo.
Online shopping and banking, I do all the time. I just am careful that I know the site, and it has an https URL. I think that information means to be careful with your SSN and your physical address. Does that help?

Re: Redirect/Jump Problems
I realized last night that I couldn't have completely removed IE when updating my computer. It was just removed from the Start Menu and my Desktop. Even after downloading and installing IE7 from the link you provided didn't put it back into either place but I added it through Add/Remove Windows Components.
Quite a while back I had updated to IE7 but I didn't like the "tabs" or the whole look of the program. I was reluctant to change so I downloaded the old version again and switched back. I am assuming that's why it sort of disappeared when I updated. I now have IE7, a firewall and an antivirus program installed on my computer. I will be adding the other suggested programs as well. I would like to thank you for all the time you have put into helping me. I truly appreciate it. I will definitely be taking a lot more precautions when computing from now on. As much as I appreciate your help I hope I never need it again. :) Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Caroline BTW, I assume I no longer need GMER or RSIT, correct? |
