Re: Infected with brastk.exe, wini10802.exe?
Sorry, didn't think of that, info.txt attached.
I'll run the AU check program now and post separately. Thanks for your prompt reply, I have been out for a few hours. |

Re: Infected with brastk.exe, wini10802.exe?
Updates problem not resolved yet.
I tried running AU check (now v78a), but I think it got stuck fairly early on (like after less than 30 seconds). I left it for an hour and could not detect any activity in Windows Task Manager so I ended it. I disconnected from the internet and turned off Internet Security Pro in case that might be interfering and ran AU check again, but same thing happened. I have pasted the progress log for you below (from the first attempt - second one did not include the last line below). For good measure I tried downloading updates again anyway, and the same thing happened as before, lots of disk activity for about 10-15 minutes and the AU icon showing increasing % complete when I ran the mouse cursor over it, but at 33% progress it stopped. The Windows Update history/status shows the same error code as previously (0x80070001). Progress log: ---AU Check Tool v78a --- Sat 08/11/2008 14:16:56.93 ---XP Detected--- ---Stopping the Automatic Updates Service--- The Automatic Updates service is stopping. The Automatic Updates service was stopped successfully. The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service was stopped successfully. ---Removing any pending file rename or RebootRequired registry keys--- ---Removing any old UserAgent registry keys (per SOX080306700036)--- At the moment the Trend Micro Firewall seems have come back on again (when I reconnected to the internet and turned protection back on again after running AU check the second time). |

Re: Infected with brastk.exe, wini10802.exe?
The reason I asked for the info.txt was to check the status of your firewall, security center is now reporting it as operational, which is in accord with your own experience.
Nothing in the Au log gives any indication as to why the tool failed to run, or quite what your update problems are. Microsoft does free support for Update problems, I suggest you contact them as this is outside my area of expertise. http://support.microsoft.com/wupd Sorry I can't get you the site addresses for US, as I'm in the UK I get re-directed to Microsoft UK sites whenever I try to search the Microsoft US site. I don't see any signs of infection in your latest logs or anything Malware related that might explain your problems. |

Re: Infected with brastk.exe, wini10802.exe?
Many thanks, I'm pleased to hear it doesn't look like malware.
No problem, I'll see how I go with Microsoft (I'm in Australia, so I'm not sure if US site will be the one anyway). My 6 y.o. daughter asks 'why does he look so funny?' (I told her that he's fighting the bad guys). |
