Hijacking Help

First time posting so be gentle please...
Any time that I try to update Symantec or AdAware or the like, I get a message saying that the program can not connect for updates. Any time I try to go to a website such as Panda Security or Trend Micro Housecall (or many others) I get a "google" search page with my destination website as the search subject. It looks legit, but when I click on a link it sends you to a completely different place or just says page could not be displayed. I disabled System Restore. I have run scans with Symantec, AdAware, and Windows Defender (all unupdated of course). Removed any trash found there. Tried to install Spybot and others, but failed due to blocked communication to websites like these. Windows firewall is off. I even tried safe mode...denied...I get a blue screen stating it couldn't find or load a video driver. Here is a Hijackthis file (one of very few things I could load directly). Please let me know what to try next. Thank you for your time and efforts in advance.

Re: Hijacking Help

Hello and Welcome to TSF.

Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant notification by email, then click Add Subscription.

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.

Please copy this page to Notepad and Save it to your Desktop in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

------------------------------------------------------

If you have trouble downloading the files below, download them to a USB drive on another computer, and transfer them to the desktop of the affected computer.

------------------------------------------------------

Please download ComboFix and Save it to your Desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

First, we need to install the Windows Recovery Console.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery(repair) mode, if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Download the file from this Microsoft page:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Save it as it is originally named to your Desktop.

Now close all open windows and programs, including all antivirus and antispyware programs. Get help here

Then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Recovery Console.

As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return.

ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.

Once the Recovery Console is installed, this blue window will appear:

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all antivirus and antispyware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Get help here
  • Please click Yes to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a log for you.

Please post that log, ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleansing the system.

------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

Please close HijackThis now.

------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following into the Run box and click OK:

C:\Qoobox\Add-Remove Programs.txt

A text file should open. Please post the contents of that file in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

ComboFix.txt
new HijackThis log
Add-Remove Programs.txt

If you have any questions along the way...STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: Hijacking Help

You guys are the best! It appears that everything is working great now. I can get to sites like TrendMicro now that were getting redirected before, and my antivirus proggram will update once again. GJ. I am posting all the requested files below. I also re-enabled my AV and defender programs. It would seem that someone had loaded something that created a folder and files having to do with FunWebProducts (look for newspaper article about choking incident in the near future). Anyway if this results in the all-clear, I thank you sincerely. Go DAWGS!

Hello, carguy209. Go DAWGS!

Close any open browsers.

Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

Open Notepad and copy/paste all the text in the quotebox below into Notepad:

Quote:
Rootkit::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\TDSSserv.sys

Driver::
TDSSserv

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet001\Services\TDSSserv]

SkipFix::
Save this Notepad file as CFScript.txt to your Desktop and then close the file.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript onto ComboFix

If you are prompted to update ComboFix, please click Yes

Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post that log, ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

------------------------------------------------------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start(or My Computer) > Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs
  • Click (highlight) the following items:
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go back to your Control Panel and click the Java icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button.
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
      • Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window.
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window.
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
    • Delete jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe from your desktop.
------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

------------------------------------------------------

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at any Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.
**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

Please close HijackThis now.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

ComboFix.txt
Kaspersky report
new HijackThis log
report on system behavior

Re: Hijacking Help

Ok, I was delayed in my follow up to your last instructions, then I discovered that someone had opened an email attachment on this computer, further soiling the system. What an idiot!! Anyway I ran Combo fix again like I did the first time, then again with the script you gave. Both logs will be attached. Then the Java updates, ATF session, and finally the Kaspersky scan which found 39 objects..YIKES! I ran another Hijack this and here are all the results:

System behavior seems fine now that the pesky Antivirus XP crap is gone. Web browsing is normal as well. Thanks again for all that you are doing.

Re: Hijacking Help

Hello carguy209.

Quote:
Anyway I ran Combo fix again like I did the first time, then again with the script you gave.
Notice my original instructions said to do no fixing on your own. Please run ComboFix ONLY when instructed to do so.

------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the quotebox below into Notepad:

Quote:
type "C:\boot.ini">C:\look.txt
start notepad C:\Look.txt
del peek.bat
Save this as peek.bat and choose to Save as type: - All Files then close the Notepad file.
It should look like this:

Double-click on peek.bat and allow it to run. A Notepad file will open. Post the contents of that file in your next reply, and close the file.

Re: Hijacking Help

Forgive my ignorance and ADD tendancies. It won't happen again. Here is the contents of the peek.bat file:

[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Thanks again.

Not sure why ComboFix is saying the Recovery Console is not installed, as it appears to be installed by looking at your boot.ini file.

------------------------------------------------------

Quote:
and finally the Kaspersky scan which found 39 objects..YIKES!
Most of the finds are in ComboFix's quarantine folder or Symantec's quarantine folder.

------------------------------------------------------

Empty this entire folder. It's where Symantec keeps it's renamed quarantined files:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine

Don't delete the folder, just empty it. Empty your Recycle Bin if it does not do so automatically.

------------------------------------------------------

Kaspersky has detected an infected email in the following Folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst

Unfortunately, it only tells us where the email is, and not its name. You will have to find the email and delete it. It is likely an email with an attachment. If you are not sure what it is, you will have to delete emails until a scan of that folder comes up clean. You can configure Kaspersky to scan only that folder. Let me know when you find it.

------------------------------------------------------

Close any open browsers.

Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

Open Notepad and copy/paste all the text in the codebox below into Notepad:

Code:
File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK42\Statement_JAN-OCT.zip
C:\WINDOWS\system32\_scui.cpl
C:\WINDOWS\eweqeju.sys
C:\Program Files\Common Files\ifuzeh.reg
C:\WINDOWS\kevyruv.reg
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dijoritizi.inf
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\wadufadig.com
C:\WINDOWS\gohyzexezu.lib
C:\Program Files\Common Files\vefeqifef.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\edewyva.dll
C:\WINDOWS\uqihunud.reg
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ikewus.dl
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ifadu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\uwudara.ban
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\agocyc.bin
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wini10602.exe
C:\WINDOWS\imsins.BAK
C:\Program Files\Common Files\cylewelocy.db
C:\Program Files\Common Files\efekokis._sy
Save this Notepad file as CFScript.txt to your Desktop and then close the file.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript onto ComboFix

If you are prompted to update ComboFix, please click Yes

Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post that log, ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and Save a Logfile'. Save the logfile and post it here.

Please close HijackThis now.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

ComboFix.txt
new HijackThis log

Re: Hijacking Help

I screwed up the copy/paste for the CFScript because I copied it of the notepad I made of your instructions and it copied the last line incorrectly. As chastized before, I wasn't going to do a damn thing without your instruction. Here are the two logs requested.

Re: Hijacking Help

No worries.

Delete the following File if it still exists:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\efekokis._sy

Empty your Recycle Bin if it is not emptied automatically.

If any file resists deletion, reboot into Safe Mode and try again. Please let me know if you have trouble.

------------------------------------------------------

Is your system still behaving properly? Let me know and I will give you some final instructions.

Re: Hijacking Help

Ok, file succesfully deleted in normal mode. System is acting great so far. I greatly appreciate you sharing your insights to help the rest of us. Awaiting final instructions. BTW, how does one go about learning this craft? How do you read the logs and know what to look for? Thanks again.

Did you find the infected email and delete it? Did the Kaspersky scan on outlook.pst come out clean? Please let me know.

Re: Hijacking Help

Yes, I found and deleted the infected email and rescaned the pst folder with Kaspersky. Results were clean. Everything appears normal. Thanks for the info on the academy.

Re: Hijacking Help

Congratulations. Well done! Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go.

As far as those infected objects listed in the Kaspersky report, those are safely tucked away in ComboFix's quarantine folder or in old System Restore Points, which we will be taking care of now.

Go to Start >> Run and Copy/Paste the following single-line command into the Run box and click OK
combofix /u
This will uninstall ComboFix and delete ComboFix's quarantine folder. It will also implement some cleanup procedures, remove old System Restore points which contain previous infections, and create a fresh, clean System Restore point.

Please re-enable your antivirus program and any other antispyware programs disabled earlier if you haven't already.

You can safely delete any tools downloaded or any logs, files, and any shortcuts on your desktop that were created during this fix.

------------------------------------------------------

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles: To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites in Internet Explorer. See tutorial here
  • IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the site. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy is an excellent spyware remover and also offers real-time protection against critical registry changes. Don't use the Immunize feature in Spybot if you use SpywareBlaster. See tutorial here
Keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Re: Hijacking Help

Combofix /u - done
AV and Spyware reinstated - done
Microsoft updates - current except SP3 (heard it was buggy still)
Spyblaster - done
IE-Spyad - done
MVPS Hosts File - Don't know how it would work with network at job
Spybot - I have Defender and Spyblaster in place already. Do I need Spybot still? Do I need Defender running as well?

My Symantec moved some files from Qoobox Quarantine to Symantec's Quarantine. I deleted them in Symantec.

Anything else?

Re: Hijacking Help

Probably wouldn't try Spybot at work either. Everything else looks good.
