Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
Hello,
Everytime I run Spybot S&D it finds a virtumonde.prx trojan. I've been having lots of pop-ups through Explorer. I switched to Firefox, but some popups are still happening, for example to cleanuptool.com. I'm also having trouble getting my automatic updates turned on, I've tried several suggestions found on the web with no luck. I tried going to the microsoft site to upgrade, but when I enter an address into Explorer, Firefox takes over and goes there instead. I've done the services.mrc run command and turned automatic updates to auto, but it just reverts back to disabled. Through Control Panel and System, it says that auto updates are on, but I have a red shield in my toolbar that says it's off. I installed Spyware Blaster, Spybot S&D and iespyad. I had AdAware, but uninstalled it when I started using Spybot. Thanks in advance for your help. Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.
Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first. The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. As part of installing the Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return. Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says: The Recovery Console was successfully installed. ![]() Please continue as follows: Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware. When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log. Also... Please go to Start > Run and copy/paste the following, then press Enter: C:\QooBox\Add-Remove Programs.txt A text file should open. Please post the contents of that file in your next reply. If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
Hello tetonbob,
First, thanks so much for your help. I downloaded combofix and I'm trying to get the Windows Recovery Console installed. I think it's already installed, as it's an option when I boot up. I can't find my XP disc (buried in a box in storage somewhere) So I went to the Microsoft site as directed to try and download the setup disk to the desktop. I click on the download link, it asks me if I want to save and I click on save file and then nothing happens...Do i need to install the recovery console if it's already installed? But, then I don't know about running combofix, cause you said it would start automatically. I'm feeling kinda lost.... Thanks again |

Re: Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
Just to clarify, you were able to download ComboFix, but not the Recovery Console package, is that correct?
Let's see if it is indeed installed. If you see it as a boot option at startup, it quite possibly is. Most users do not have RC installed. Please download BootCheck.exe to your desktop.

Re: Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
The same exact thing is happening with the BootCheck link. It asks if I want to save, I click save file and nothing happens. I'm using FireFox, is that why?

Re: Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
Shouldn't be, unless you have some restrictions in place. I just downloaded it with Firefox 3.
Try using Internet Explorer.

Re: Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
OK, I got it with FireFox, I had to change my option to save to desktop always, rather than ask me where to save it. Weird...
I'll post the log in a minute |

Re: Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
Hello tetonbob,
I apologize for the delay in response. I"m trying to shut off McAfee before I run ComboFix, but there's no option to exit when I right click the M icon. I read the info on beepingcomputer and that was all it said to do. Any other option to disable it? |

Re: Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
I don't use McAfee. All the AVs I use, you can exit from the system tray icon.
See if there's some other option on the system tray icon that seems to fit the need, or from within the application interface. What version of McAfee are you using? See if this applies: # Double-click the taskbar icon to open McAfee Security Center # Click Advanced Menu (bottom mid-left) # Click Configure (left) # Click Computer & Files (top left) # Disable VirusScan in the right-hand module and select "Never" when asked for resume time. # Click Internet & Network (top left) # Disable Firewall in the right-hand module, again select "Never" when asked. Reenable after ComboFix is done, by reversing the above steps. Otherwise, boot into Safe Mode, and perform the steps in Safe Mode. If ComboFix reboots the machine as part of it's process, reboot back into Safe mode and allow ComboFix to complete it's routines. Once a log has been created, boot back into normal mode, and post the requested logs. To boot into Safe Mode: Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
Good job.
Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- S& D Spybot's Tea Timer While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent our tools from fixing certain things. Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
Using Internet Explorer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat by right-clicking on the link, and choosing Save As. Save it to your desktop, or somewhere you can find it easily. Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer. ================================================== Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Place a check next to the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Re: Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
You're using Internet Explorer, not Windows Explorer, right? In other words, you need to change browsers, open this page in IE, and then try to save the file....if you have Firefox 3 installed.
If you're using Firefox 3, the file will only download as a txt file. It would then need to be renamed as a .bat, so it looks like this: If you're using Firefox 2 still, you should still be able to right click and Save As.

Re: Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
Yes, I'm using Internet Explorer. Everytime I try to navigate away from my homepage in Internet Explorer it opens the page with FireFox. I am using FireFox 3. I downloaded the file and it's a txt file. I tried to rename it ResetTeaTimer.bat, but it remains a text document.

Re: Virtumonde.prx keeps coming back, can't turn auto windows updates on
OK, I think I got it. I clicked the link with FireFox, then saved page as ResetTeaTimer.bat and itshows that icon now on the desktop. Should I proceed?
